Commercial Radio Operator License Exams to be given at
Hosstraders Flea on October 16th
In a move similar to the well established Ham VEC system the
FCC has set up a system of Commercial Operator exams to be
administered by independent COLEM (commercial operator license
examination managers).
The MIT Radio Exam Team will conduct exams for the General
Radiotelephone Operators License and the Marine Radio Operators
Permit. The exams will be held at 1PM Saturday October 16 at the
Hosstraders Hamfest in Rochester NH. There is a $35 examination
fee. Bring the orginal and a copy of any commercial license you
want to claim credit for. Also bring 2 forms of picture ID, a
black pen and a pencil.
Copies of the question pool will be available for sale on Friday
and Saturday morning.
The General Radio Telephone Operators License is required to
service transmitters in the aviation, maritime and international
radio services. A Maritime Radio Operators Permit is required to
operate radiotelephone stations aboard large ships and certain
aviation and coast stations.
At a later date exams will be available for the Commercial Radio
Telegraph operators licenses and the Global Maritime Distress and
Safety Systems (GMDSS) licenses. Amateur Extra Class operators may
be particularly interested in obtaining a commercial telegraph
license as they will receive credit for the 20 WPM 2nd class code exam.
A regular schedule of exams is planned for Cambridge MA.
The MIT Radio Exam Team operates under the auspitis of the
National Radio Examiners COLEM, part of the W5YI group.

Subject: commercial exams
From: Robert J Halprin <0005582789@mcimail.com>
Organization: Unknown
As you know, the FCC finalized its privatization of the
commercial radio operator examinator program in June,
generally along the lines of the ham radio volunteer
examination program that was implemented in the mid 80s.
I have been appointed as "test center manager" for
the Hartford, Connecticut, area, by one of the
private contractors approved by the FCC to conduct
examinations.
Although I have been a licensed ham for over 20 years,
I have never played any role in the ham examination
setup (and have no plans whatsoever to do so), I am
participating in the commercial examination program
in this area. It remains to be seen what kind of
demand, if any, there will be for commercial exam
opportunites.
Commercial exams that are now privatized include
exams for the general radiotelephone operator license,
the marine radio operator permit, the restricted
radiotelephone operator permit, certain radiotelegraph
licenses, and various other permits, endorsements
and licenses, some of which do not come on line until
1994.
Exams are to be conducted either monthly or quarterly.
Any interested party or applicant in this area can
contact me at my law office (which serves as the
"official" test center address) as follows:
Attorney Robert J. Halprin
20 Grand Street
Hartford, CT 06106-1588
tel: 203-724-6440
However, in view of the fact that I out of the office
more than I am in, contact me via e-mail is preferable,
either at 0005582789@MCIMAIL.COM or at HALPRINR@CCSU.CTSTATEU.EDU.
Thanks.

Subject: New AM: Springfield, MA
From: pryack@mtholyoke.edu (Paul Ryack)
Organization: Mount Holyoke College
In Springfield, MA, 1270 appears to be the home of a new Spanish language
station. I don't understand much Spanish, but it sounds as though they
are doing program tests, in preparation for an official sign-on in the near
future. Since the call is apparently not announced in English, I don't
know what it is. The city of license may actually be Holyoke, MA, in
metro Springfield, home to a large Puerto Rican population. 1270 used to
be the frequency of WSPR, which went dark about a year or so ago. There
was also a station licensed to Holyoke, a daytimer on 930, WREB, that went
QRT not long after WSPR died. With the new station, 3 of the 7 remaining
AMers in this market are either ethnic and/or religious.

Subject: Newsletters for DJs?
From: isbell@osiris.cso.uiuc.edu (Andy Isbell)

First a little background info, then I'll get to my question. I'm taking a
Broadcast Communication class at our local community college, the main purpose
of which is to teach you how to be a radio DJ. It seems to be a pretty good
class so far. We get to do at least 10 newscasts and 20 hours on the air
during the semester (with the opportunity to do more if there are open shifts.)
If anyone's in the area and interested, the station is WPCD FM 88.7 in
Champaign, IL. They play oldies from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM and then switch to
current AOR top 30 (or 40) until 10:00 when they go off the air (my shift is
Friday 4-6 PM starting this week!)
Anyway, here's my question. Our instructor mentioned in class that there are a
number of newsletters (JockTalk is the only name that I can think of right
now) that have information that you can use on the air (info on artists, jokes,
this day in history, etc.) He said several of these newsletters are advertised
in the back of Radio & Records, but I checked the most recent issue at the
station and couldn't find any of the ads. I didn't have a lot of time to look,
so I may have missed them. So the question is, do these newsletters still
exist, and how can I get in touch with them to check them out? Are there any
that are recommended, or are they pretty much worthless? We get some of the
info from the AP computer, but I'd like to make my show as good as I can.
Thanks for any info.

About the only ozone-related effect that RF radiation itself has is
related to corona generation. Around some of the high-powered Mexican
broadcasters in the sixties, you could see a blue glow in the sky for
some distance, and a sharp smell of ozone to go along with it. I would
consider this to be a positive effect on ozone and a negative effect
on property values.
Now, all the chlorofluorocarbons that we use to clean tape heads at FM
stations, that might do something.

TalkNet in Arlington VA said that Dr. Rubin's contract wasn't
renewed because of a lack of interest. My wife is upset.
Is anyone else?
Can he be found anywhere else?
Thanks, ken.
