I'm sure this has been discussed at length at some time in the past.
But...could someone please send me information about AM stereo receivers
currently on the market? Particularly car receivers.
I'd especially like to see a CD player / cassette player / FM stereo /
AM stereo

on the market.
Any ideas? Suggestions?

You might want to check out the AM/FM/Shortwave Philips DC777 car radio
& cassette player. It has received relatively favorable reviews for its
shortwave performance, but I have no real info as to its AM (MW) specs
and/or behavior. The only comments in reviews I can recall regarding the
MW performance have been noncommittal, since the SW aspects are what
people buy this for. However, this note just appeared in the shortwave
newsgroup about it -- it is currently available at a sharp discount:

|I too have been looking, and lusting, after the Philips DC777 for about a
|year since seeing in the 1993 Passport. I just recieved the 1994 Passport
|and in it, they say "If you want world band in your car, now is the time
|to act" as they believe it may be discontinued.
|
|Passport gives a phone number to call 1-800-544-0618, which is Philips
|North America. I called today and can offer the following information:
| They are not planning on discontinuing the DC777 but are
| just clearing the shelves for the 1994 version of
| the DC777. The person I spoke with said there was no
| difference between the 1994 and the 1993 version.
|
| The DC777 has sold quite well for them.
|
| The current closeout price is $195 plus about $6 for shipping.
| This price is $100 less than what EEB is currently selling
| the radio for.
|
| The CD/Shortwave radio Philips offered IS being discontinued and
| they do not have anymore in stock.
|
|Needless to say, I have ordered a radio and am eagerly awaiting its arrival
|next week. So, the moral is, if you want one at a good price, now is the
|time to get one.
|
|Enjoy!

|The opinions expressed here do not in any way shape or form, represent the
|policy of the company I work for.
I have a 10K+-character review of the DC777 by Ralph Brandi saved
on-line, so if you or anyone on the list wants to see it, I can send a
copy or post it to the group. It emphasizes the SW aspects only, though.

I am looking for a paper presented earlier this year at an NAB
conference wherein stacking of multiple compression algorithms
was criticized. Anyone who knows where to find that paper
or a reference to it is asked to email me, please.

I've heard about "Coupon Radio" using thr RDS encoding system, and basically
understand the concept. What I would like to know is how are the actual
"coupons" printed? Is paper installed inside the radio like an adding
machine? Does the radio have a "laser printer" inside?
Thanks!

A few days ago I posted the 3rd quarter Cincinnati radio ratings. All-Elvis
WAOL-FM 99.5 had a 0.0 rating. Some time in the last few weeks this station
changed formats. Now instead of playing "Nothing But the King", they play
"Good Time Rock 'n' Roll Oldies from the '50s, '60s, and '70s". I believe it
is still a satellite feed. I listened to it a while yesterday, and selections
from the Everly Brothers, the Beatles, the Four Seasons, and Credence Clearwater
Revival were played. I don't think this station will be any threat to WGRR's
highly-rated oldies programming.

Subject: What do radio station engineers do?
From: isbell@osiris.cso.uiuc.edu (Andy Isbell)
Organization: University of Illinois at Urbana
I'm taking a class in radio broadcasting while looking into a possible career
change. I'm really interested in being an on-the-air DJ, but I think I have
the technical background and abilities to do some engineering (I have a BS in
General Engineering and an MS in Environmental Engineering.) I currently work
in a research/office environment and am bored stiff most of the time. I'm
looking for something that involves hands-on work and is more fun than what I'm
doing now. I have some experience in electronics and recording, but not a lot.
The real question is, what do station engineers do? Are they responsible for
all of the equipment at the station, wiring things up, etc.? I have some idea,
I guess, but I haven't really figured out what a "typical" day for a station
engineer is like (I know as I write that that there are probably no two days
alike.) Any station engineers care to write about what your duties and
responsibilities are? How difficult is it to break into engineering? Thanks
for any help.

In a previous article, neil.parks@pcohio.com (Neil Parks) says:
>It has already happened. 3WE now runs a short, ordinary,
>newscast, and then joins the network in time for "Imus In the
>Morning News Time". Yuck. I have stopped listening to 3WE
>before noon.
A couple of points. First of all, you can get news ANYwhere, ANYtime, on
ANY wavelength (AM, FM, TV, even this here computer). 3WE is far from your
only option.
Second of all, though I'm not sure he belongs on a stuffy all-news station,
Imus is FUNNY. CREATIVE and FUNNY, unlike the idiot Stern, who desecrates
WNCX every morning (I have a similar situation to you in that regard, I
avoid NCX like the plague til about 11, I love it otherwise)
It all goes back to this: you have the power to choose. Don't like Imus?
Hit WERE. Don't like WERE? Watch CNN. There is frankly too much news and
pseudo soft-news on the airwaves, in my opinion.
I cannot vouch for this new network Imus show, as I am not interested in
listening to 3WE, but as someone who grew up near New York City and
listened to him every day, I feel I must stand up for him. I will, knowing
this, tune in in the morning and see what is up, but in the meantime, what
you want is out there, you just have to go looking for it again, I suppose.
Peace.

I've always found Larry to be very, um, brusque with his callers, and I'm
from New York City! There's something about the nighttime that made it
rather interesting to listen to at 2 am, but in the middle of the day it
tends to make him just come off as a jerk, and a relatively
personality-less one at that. "Yeah....whatever, goodbye. Grosse Point,
Wisconsin!" I can easily see where the average office worker/commuter
wouldn't want to listen to that kind of show during the afternoon. I
don't know whether Larry made the move due to ego, an honest belief that
he'd get better ratings, or an honest desire to just work a more-normal
daypart, but IMHO he should get back to the middle of the night, where he
really was the King.
