From: "Chip (C.D.) Kelley" <chipk@bnr.ca>
Organization: NONE
Following KCBS-FM-93.1 Los Angeles, CBS' newly acquired soft AC KLRX-97.9
"Lite 97.9" Dallas-Fort Worth has switched to classic rock-oldies "Arrow
97.9." Like Arrow 93, Arrow is for "All Rock and Roll Oldies" from the
60s and 70s ("and a little of the 80s"). KLRX is co-owned with longtime
AOR KTXQ-102.1 "Q102."
D/FW seems to be a little rock-heavy on the dial now: classic rock KZPS-92.5,
modern rock KDGE-94.5 "Edge," current-driven rock KEGL-97.1 "Eagle" and
Z-Rock KDZR-99.1, KTXQ, and the new KLRX.
Other recent Texas changes in recent weeks...
Spanish AC KSRR-FM-92.9 San Antonio flips calls to KROM
Top 40 KIOC-106.1 Beaumont/Port Arthur has switched to top 40/rock.
KIOC still remains "Power Hits K106," but is now the Golden Triangle's
"all rock, no rap radio station." KIOC joins WAAL "the Whale" Binghamton
NY, KTUX "Tux 99 Rocks" Shreveport LA, WZAT Savannah GA, KWTO-FM (formally
KKHT) Sprindfield MO, and WRFY-FM Reading PA as rock 40 converts over the
past year.
Corpus Christi area KPCB-102.3 finally returns to the air under a LMA
with KDAE-1590/KLTG-96.5 as KXCC with SMN's classic rock format.
Silent KCRM-103.1 Cameron returns to their on 103.9 and 50,000 watts under
new owners. KCRM is now AC "CD103.9" serving nearby Bryan/College Station.

I'm trying to find a copy of the paper presented earlier this year
at an NAB conference about the problems with stacking multiple compression
technologies. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Chicago AM 1000 still WLUP
From: okt1@crux5.cit.cornell.edu (Oliver Tse)
Organization: Cornell University
I checked AM 1000 out of Chicago for two consecutive nights
on October 14 and 15 and heard that the station still
identifies itself as WLUP. Furthermore, Eddie Schwartz was
on both nights around 11:00pm Central Time and he did not
talk sports at all. AM 1000 also played album-oriented
rock throughout the night.
So what happened to their new all-sports format? Why isn't
the station doing sports all-night? Also, is the call
letter switch to WMVP still pending FCC approval as
the call letters WMVP currently belong to a station in Milwaukee?
(_USA_Today_'s Michael Hiestand reported the call-letter switch in
his "Sports on TV" column on October 8).
Perhaps our moderator can answer these questions since he is based in
Chicago. Thanks in advance.
[moderator responds: WMVP in Milwaukee is now WMCS. Although WLUP-AM
was using the calls casually and IDing as WLUP for a while, I think
the changeover is official now or soon will be. As far as the format
is concerned, it is true that the pure sports format has not taken
hold. Schwartz is still orphaned on the AM, while the rest of the
crew has moved to the FM. While I am not a big Ed Schwartz fan, he is
certainly being messed around by the station. He should be on the FM
after Danny Bonneduce. Overnights on AM-1000 is a thing called
LOOP-A-PALOOZA, a best-of collage for the FM (ex-AM-1000) personalities.
My take on all of this is that the LOOP is full of themselves and is
kind of adrift in uncertainty. I believe they never should have
messed with their mega-successful AM-1000. The downfall, if you will,
began when Brandmeier switched with Steve and Garry, and then
the subsequent signing of Stern, which I am sure they will regret.
Loop brass were quoted as saying, when asked why they were shuffling
the deck so much... "because we can.." Not the best attitude.
However, the FM lineup is very fresh and very very entertaining.
Kevin Mathews in the morning is an absolute RIOT and Danny Bonneduce
is a truly fresh and original talent. I hear talk that they will
be going on the satellite. Good news for people who like the
LOOP but cannot receive the FM. As for the AM, I think it will either
flop, or be far less successful than the previous format was. We now
have 2 (so-called) all sports AM's (WMVP and WSCR), a 6 hour sports
block on WMAQ (Group W all news), a strong and long standing sports
commitment at WGN (Tribune Broadcasting - Full service), and all night
satellite-fed sports on north suburban FM WVVX. Something has to
give. Even a sport-junkie town like Chicago can only support so much
sports talk. Bill]

Subject: Prarie Home Companion: Why the name change?
From: cskerr@hellcat.ecn.uoknor.edu (Charles S Kerr)
Organization: University of Oklahoma, Engineering Computer Network
Hello,
Sorry if this isn't an appropriate place for this message, but it seemed
like the best bet from the newsgroups I could find.
I was wondering if anyone out there knows why the American Radio Company
of the Air has changed its name back to Prarie Home Companion, and whether
or not the actress who plays Babette is gone for good. Also, if there's
a better newsgroup to ask about this.

Does anybody out there know how the San Francisco & Los Angeles radio
stations fared in the latest Arbitrons? I would like to know.

From: alandb@netcom.com (Alan)

Here are the 12+ (6AM-Mid Mon-Sun) Arbitron Rankings for Sacramento, CA.
(Arbitron Market Ranking: 28)
As a newcomer to the area, I've had a hard time getting interested in the
market because there just aren't any good stations here. Add to this the
fact that there are 4, yes 4!, country stations (3 FM, 1 AM). The really
surprising thing about it is that they are all owned by EZ Communications
[KNCI pending FCC approval]. Why would anyone want four stations in the
same market, all with the same format, when there are obvious gaps in the
market?: NO CHR, NO commercial jazz/new age, NO commercial classical.
The only two FM stations not making the top 15 were KFIA 101.9 (Religious)
and KQBR 104.3 (Country).

I know I'm a little behind things, but I was hoping someone out there
could fill me in on what the circumstances were behind the break-up
of steve & garry. I know the aftermath & all, but I was wondering how or
what led up to it. In case this is old, boring news to some, just
e-mail me a response. Thanks for everything.
