Worst song shows aren't always as good as they are cracked up to be.
In 1989 and 1990, 3MMM Melbourne (Australia) had a Top 8 at 8 show.
One night in 1989 they decided to have a 'Top 8 you hate'. The funny thing
was that many of the songs that made it into the Top 8 You Hate were
in the regular Top 8 just a few nights before, and the following night,
they were back in the regular Top 8 at 8.
When they held another Top 8 You Hate in 1990, some of the songs that made
the chart included songs which were actually in the station's regular playlist.
And they continued to be in the playlist despite being voted as one of the
most hated songs.
The moral of the story is that the songs which people hate aren't always
mutually exclusive from the songs that people like, and you can't please
everybody.

Hi All.
One of my Radio Broadcasting students recently asked the question about
certain FM radio signals having a negative effect on the Ozone. That was
news to me. Has anyone else any input?

Subject: Talk Show Hosts (response to thread)
From: "Ellis P. Carter Jr." <epj2@Ra.MsState.Edu>
Organization: Unknown
In response to: Article 2624 of rec.radio.broadcasting:
"It's ironic that talk radio hosts claim to have special access to
a democratic sample of "public opinion" which in American mythology is re-
sponsible for political processes and policy outcomes. Talk radio in the
hands of ideologues becomes an automatic legitimation of whatever nonsense
makes it out of the mouth of the talk radio preacher. Talk radio therefore
represents the power of the appearance of agreement and consensus, not the
actual consensus itself, although it is possible to say that talk radio also
creates a false consensus."
Any radicals, liberal or conservative, make dangerous hosts.
"Christian radio programming, especially of the talk radio format,
is responsible not only for a very large source of funding for radical,
ultra conservative political factions, but also takes up more and more of
the AM (&FM) bandwidth. The stations which like to program talk radio shows
are privately owned and operated for profit. These stations build giant
networks of advertisers and political personalities and campaigns and fuse
advertising money with evangelical political missions."
This IS America, and the above actions are not illegal. Besides, although
this is true in some rare occasions involving RADICAL WACKOS, this is for
the most part an unfair stereotype of people who do some very good things.
"Christian talk radio is a very efficient and economical means to produce the
impression of a vast moral majority linked up in a technocratic solidarity
against differences of opinion."
The people who criticize them also seem to have a "solidarity against
differences of opinion". The problem here seems to be radicals of either
political leaning. What we need more of is people who are willing to
open-mindedly listen to differences of opinion and, instead of criticizing,
simply agree to disagree.
"Talk radio creates an interactive reality
where perhaps for the first time "born again" Christians can speak plainly
and openly about their stubborn intolerance of differences in color, gender,
sexual preference, economic status, etc., and expect their claims to register
with popular opinion."
It also creates a forum where those willing to make the sacrifice of money
and/or time can exercise their first amendment rights. Besides, just
because their views do not agree with yours does not make you right
(although you have the right) in branding their views as "stubborn
intolerances". Their opinions are as valid as yours.
"The appearance of agreement and harmony about cultural and political
conflicts in American culture is shattered whenever the monologue is broken
by actual expressions of difference. There are recent artifacts which show
quite clearly what can happen when clever crank callers pose as "normals"
on fascist talk radio shows and then pull the rug out from under the conver-
sation at the last minute. A group of crank callers from Portland, OR
called the National Hardwood Floor Association of American put out an LP/CD
of prank calls to the Christian radio station KPDQ in Portland made over a
three year period. Numerous reviews of this CD have appeared, none of which
thoroughly covers the groundbreaking concept of political crank calling.
KPDQ was an outpost of Oregon Citizens Alliance fundraising and political
advertisement, about the same time this group initiated harsh persecutionist
campaigns against homosexuals and pregnant women."
This is as comical as the Howard Stern callers who frequently interrupt
cable call-in shows like those hosted by Larry King and Tom Snyder. I think
that these calls, when properly done, have a comical value worth their
weight in gold. Yet there are others who think that these calls are an
inexcusable show of immaturity and disrespect. But you don't see me calling
their views "stubborn intolerances". Besides, for the target listener, these
calls don't shatter the "appearance of agreement and harmony" any more than
the views of the show hosts seem to shatter your personal beliefs. And
the target audience seems to be the only audience that matters in radio,
other than the audience composed of FCC investigators.
"The Hardwood Floors turned a monological and oppressive talk radio
show format into an opportunity to inject humor, theater, absurdity, \
unpredictability, and radical politics into the "grand conversation" of
public opinion. Callers assumed names and identities, personal problems and
differences of opinion, and by the end of each call (usually terminated by
the host or else amiably resolved) undermined the integrity of the monologue
or else made it very hard for the host to keep from laughing. The record
is a testament to the ambivalence of the interactive talk radio technology:
what usually makes for solid-looking, above-board, uncontradicted and
seamless propaganda can be turned on its ear by a few clever and persistent
technological activists. Too bad these prank callers will probably be re-
stricted to pranking established programs, and will never make it to a posi
the other side of the supposedly democratic talk radio process--pranksters
rarely usurp petty tyrants on the radio."
No, the record is a testament to the hilarious nature of these calls. They
should be archived and played on a weekly radio show.
"Submitted by RIOTGIRL@utvms.cc.utexas.edu"
There are no conspiracies by people of either political leaning to brain-
wash people or take over the world through the use of talk radio. There
are, however, many people exercising their first amendment right through
the use of talk radio, even more who agree with their views, and still
more that enjoy the programming, despite whether they agree with the views
of the host. Attacking talk radio is not justified solely because one
does not agree with the views being expressed on a few shows, nor is it
justified to attack a group that does good in the world solely based on
the fact that you disagree with their beliefs. If you are intolerant of
the intolerant, are you intolerant of yourself?
[Moderator's Note: Are you SURE there are no such attempts to 'brainwash'
the population via talk radio? There certainly is in the world of
advertizing, some argue that news is slanted in favor of what ever ideology
they oppose. Leftists say that the news is right-wing slanted and
right-wingers (now called conservatiuves) say that it is controled by the
left. What about a conspiracy to brainwash people into denying that there
could possibly be a conspiracy to brainwash people? That would be a good
place to start, NO? If I wanted to brainwash you, the first thing I would
attempt to instill in you is the denial of the possibility that you are being
brainwashed. Thereby anyone who warns you of the process that you are
undergoing would be rejected out-of-hand by you as being ridiculous. Bill]

Let's join the host in a little reality break, shall we?
(Trumpet-dominated jingle theme starts, up and under host's vocals...)
good morning, and welcome in to the Intelligent Morning Radio Program for
Saturday, October 2, 1993. Sunny skies today with a high of 58, right now
48 at the station, 49 downtown and 45 at the airport. Get on the air
by calling us right now, or emailing at the address at the top of this posting.
(theme ends in appropriate trumet blast and jingle singers singing calls.)
I was telecomputing last night on INTERNET, one of those electronic super-
highways that the Billary Clinton administration would love to see keeping
track of your entire life, when I read a severaly misinformed, but decidedly
liberal posting from someone in Texas. Having been to Texas for an eight
month stint in Odessa, a place I reccomend you NEVER go, I felt the need to
put this liberal in her place, where they all belong.
She was decrying the recent explosion of conservative talk shows, which, if
you've listened to this show for more than 15 minutes, you will be intimately
familiar with. Her problem seems to be that the right wing, and more
specifically, CHRISTIANS (aaack! get 'em away! folks with morals!!) have
found a voice that had been reserved for liberals for decades, and she's
scared to death. That's right, listeners, I said SCARED TO DEATH! To
understand the significance of this fear, let's take a look at how those
save=you-from-yourselves, liberal do-gooders have spread their prophecy of
dependence on government and lack of personal responsibility on the pouplace.
It all started in the sixties, when time for these birds was measured in NASA
style countdown terms of t-minus minutes until the next protest. All through
the 70s they carried signs, sat down in the street, and hyphenated their names
in a vain effort to instill their political agenda upon us.
The eighties brought the 12 years of unprecedented economic growth, when
liberals were downright ignored, pushed to the side as the free market
provided money and jobs, much to their horror. Reagan cut taxes (the mark
of the devil for left-wingers...they only want taxes to increase) and saw
revenue increase. The Democrat controlled congress spent and spent, but the
power of the free market continued to dominate.
Now comes along Bill Clinton, the pied piper of the left. He convinced forty-
some precent of the nation that Bush was bad, and that he would lead us to the
promised land of entitlements and tax increases.
All the while, Talk radio became fab. Now, conservatives, not people given
to hedonistic shouting of oaths and useless sit-ins, found a place to inform
the public of the facts that the Liberally-controlled media would not. Rush
Limbaugh led the way and proved that conservatives really do exist. You don't
hear from them because while the liberals protest and whine, the rightists are
making a living, making money, and succeeding, which is exactly what the
dems could do if they weren't so damned jealous of those who choose to work and
prosper.
Now, a way for those who do while others protest have a way to speak and be
heard without taking days off work to march and picket.
WAIT!! Screamed the liberals! HOW CAN THEY BE HEARD! How can they possibly
do this and still make money? This, you, see exploded in their faces. The
shattered peices of their hyphenated names littered the sidewalks where
"Hell no, we won't go" was heard (and ignored) just months before.
Now what. Let's see. We've got no money, so we can't put them out of
business. We work on emotion, not facts and reason, so we can't go on a
traditional campaign. I KNOW! GRAB YE SIGNS, O disenfranchised boomers
and clueless college kids! We'll scream and howl our protest cries for the
masses! It's not....well, FAIR!! Yes! We deserve EQUAL TIME!! If no one
will listen to our ludicrous protests, then we'll cry until someone
pacifies us with a talk show! And then we can all commiserate via the airwaves
how unfair life is, and the urgent need to separate americans from their money
through taxes!
The commentary that statred this points up just how afraid the
liberals are, now that the right has found a dignified, effective
medium for intelligent discourse on how fast everything is going to
hell under clinton. No signs and slogans needed. Just facts and
thought, two weapons that the liberals have no way to combat.
Right-wing talk hosts tell the TRUTH. All you have to do is have the
inner strength to believe it, or at least check our facts.
We are unstoppable. Just watch the left squirm.
After the break, your phone calls, and the local headlines from NewsChannel
15.
I'm Paul Phillips. We'll be right back.

I happen to work in both radio and TV here in Chicago and am very discusted
with what's going on in these fields. I am not sure how aware the public
is of this but it's about time someone opened their mouthes.
Gary Spears is a great friend of mine. He has number one ratings at WBBM-Fm
(B-96) in Chicago. He was let go "blown out" because he was "making tooooo
much money." For Chicago in afternoons, I'm sorry but $70,000.00 is NOT
toooo much money. Yes it is a lot, but not for the Chicago Market (Steve
Dahl---$670,000 and Doug Banks WGCI----$645,000 and Tom Joyner WGCI--1.2 Mil).
it's not a lot of money.
NBC and CBS are about the CHEAPEST companies that I have ever worked for.
To the American public, programming suffers. As owners of the airwaves
(The American People)...it's about time we demand more. With the American's
airwaves, do you know how much bartered "stuff" these stations get without
forking over a penny....bulidings, supplies, payroll cash, you name it!
It's time that this stops!!
kforsha@orion.itt.luc.edu
[Moderator's Note: Steve Dahl does not make anywhere near what you
claim. He and Garry made somewhere around 300k for the two of them,
plus a very small profit share in the AM station. Still in all your
point is well taken. Bill]
