It may have been the "Canadian Content" law that did them in.
The Canadian government came up with the short-sighted idea that
radio stations should play a certain quota of local product
whether it was popular or not.
CKLW-FM tries to sound like the old top-40 CKLW format.

It has already happened. 3WE now runs a short, ordinary,
newscast, and then joins the network in time for "Imus In the
Morning News Time". Yuck. I have stopped listening to 3WE

The local station carrying Larry King's weekday afternoon show, WDWS/
Champaign, recently dropped it, returning to a lighter local talk show. A
friend at that station told me that besides unimpressive ratings, they
also took into account listener feedback that Larry was too
"rude" with callers. I wonder if that's a small city/Midwestern reaction
from afternoon listeners (who may not have been familiar with King's
previous overnight show). Have stations been dropping/moving King in other
markets, and what's the local reaction to his afternoon show in your neck of
the woods?

M Street is informative, but overpriced for my needs.
Unfortunately, since White's Radio Log seems to have gone out of
business many years ago, M St is the only substitute.
I wish someone would publish a national listing of all stations
that broadcast major league baseball, Paul Harvey, Rush Limbaugh,
Charles Osgood, Gil Gross, On Computers, etc. To me, that would
be much more useful than M Street.

The basis of my claim is that:
1) as far as I know, the FCC has no sworn peace officers
2) you and I have every right to leave a government agent/employee
unless a) that agent/employee is a "sworn peace officer" and
a) that "sworn peace officer" detains or arrest us.
If the FCC employee was not a sworn peace officer and if he did not
detain or arrest the person, the person was merely exercising his
rights as a free American; the havoc was caused by a government
employee who did not respect those rights.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but FCC employees are *not* peace officers,
have no power to *enforce* anything except the conditions of licenses gran-
ted by the FCC. And the regulations in question are *not* laws, they are
*regulations*, and are enforceable only by having the FCC seek a court
order (at least when they are applied to ordinary citizens).
This, at least, is how it's been explained to me. If I'm wrong, I'd like
to know.

INFORMATION
Here are the basics. For a complete file on the charter of this publication
and it's guidelines, send email to the Internet Address of
rrb@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu with the word 'help file'
as the subject.
1) AVAILABILITY: Anyone with an e-mail account on any major system can
subscribe to Airwaves. There is no charge for subscriptions. Some
non-Internet systems do charge a nominal fee for reacing Internet e-mail.
Also, all articles published in Airwaves are echoed to Usenet newsgroup
rec.radio.broadcasting. The subscription desk's e-mail address is -
SUBSCRIBE@airwaves.chi.il.us
2) SUBJECTS: Virtually any topic that pertains to domestic radio
broadcasting.
3) POSTING: You may post directly to Usenet - or - you may email articles
directly to ARTICLEs@airwaves.chi.il.us. All articles are reviewed by
the editor/moderator prior to posting.
4) POLICIES: Basically just keep the flame and noise levels down, stay on
topic, edit quoted text as much as possible, and try to keep the
'Brain-To-Bullsh*t' ratio as high as possible :->.
Again, for a complete file on these topics, see 'help file' above.
5) ARCHIVES: We keep archives of all past issues available for FTP at the
Internet site of deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu. They are in the directory -
/misc/rec.radio.b-cast, and are arranged in sub-directories acording to
issue number. All are in compressed (.Z) format and should be transfered
in the binary mode within FTP. If you have trouble with FTP, or are on a
system that does not allow FTP, let me know at rrb@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu,
and I'll try to assist. For those using DOS or Macintosh platforms, there
are utilities available free, or as shareware, that will decompree Unic .Z

There are many people who have helped this publication to become what it is.
In no particular order...
Doug Blair <blair@obdient.chi.il.us>: For creating many of the shell
scripts and programs used in editing, collating and mailing this publication.
Also, for assistance with the graphics used in the Airwaves cover page.
In addition to being a wiz at Unix stuff, Doug is a well known air-talent in
the Chicagoland market and an all-around swell guy. At this point I owe him
a *LOT* of pizza :->.
Greg Gulik <root@gagme.chi.il.us>: Sysadmin at gagme, a great public access
UNIX site on Chicago's Northwest side. Greg runs a Pub-nix site as it should
be run, with care and commitment to his users. Greg has my eternal gratitude
for his willingness to allow me news and system access, for answering too many
numerous and varied questions *and* going to great pains to ressurect my
entire e-mail file from mail logs, after an unfortunate crash left me without
a list-less!!! For gagme information, mail to - info@gagme.chi.il.us - .
C. Lance Moxley <lance@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu>: For allowing the Archives to
be housed on the machine he administers. For his patience with some of the
same sort of dumb questions that Greg has had to put up with :->, and
for permitting me to use his site for posting and mailing news to this list.
If you use the archives, ** PLEASE ** take the time to drop Lance a note to
say thanks. NEVER bother him with problems, send those to me.
Patrick Townson <ptownson@eecs.nwu.edu> Moderator of Telecom Digest and
comp.dcom.telecom, for getting me started on the net and offering advice
(some of it I took, some I did't) along the way. While he and I do things a
bit differently, I am still proud to call him a friend.
And of course, the most important person without whom there would be no
Airwaves Journal what so ever...
*YOU* - the poster and reader of Airwaves.
It is *YOU* who make Airwaves what it is.
Thank You.
