  6. Medphone, a health technology firm, has filed a lawsuit for
  7. defamation
  8. against an investor for allegedly making false statements about the
  9. company on Prodigy.  Medphone says the comments, made in the "Money
  10. Talk" area of the online service, caused its stock price to fall.
  11. Prodigy is not named as a defendant, but reportedly fears that it
  12. might
  13. be if this action sparks similar suits in the future.

  16. Piracy at the Pentagon
  17. ======================
  18. Information Week cites a story in Government Computer News (3/15/93
  19. p1)
  20. reporting the results of a Department of Defense software audit. 
  21. The
  22. DoD found that over half of the approximately 1000 computers
  23. audited
  24. were using an average of over two pirated software packages.

  29. International computer crime units are trying to nab hackers in the
  30. former Soviet bloc who are menacing computer systems worldwide.
  31. Some
  32. of the more insidious viruses are reportedly now coming from
  33. Russia.
  34. One of the newest is called LoveChild - a wicked virus designed to
  35. wipe out all memory when an infected computer is booted for the
  36. 5,000th time. Explained one weary constable from Scotland Yard:
  37. "You've
  38. got a lot of frustrated programmers in the East who have turned
  39. their
  40. attention to creating viruses."

  44. Virus Survey Results
  45. ====================
  46. In October, 1992 PC Sources magazine conducted an online/mail/fax
  47. poll
  48. of readers and their experiences with computer viruses.  Some of
  49. the
  50. notable results were...
  51.        "How often do you check your computer for viruses?"
  52.            55% - Every day
  53.            22% - Once a week
  54.             3% - Never
  55.        "Has your computer ever been hit by a virus?"
  56.            62% - No (all respondents. Answer varied depending on
  57. the
  58.                      the response method chosen by the respondent.)
  59.         Of the 20% of the users that don't, or won't, use virus
  60.        protection software, PC Sources found that their reasons
  61. fell
  62.        into four broad categories: xenophobia,
  63. penny-wise/pound-foolish,
  64.        underinformed, and trusting.

  67. Email As Evidence
  68. =================
  69. Siemens AG will be using email messages in its $50 million dollar
  70. suit against Arco.  Siemens says the messages, which are between
  71. Arco employees, show that Arco knew their solar energy division
  72. wasn't commercially viable.  Siemens claims they were defrauded
  73. when
  74. they purchased the division from Arco.
