  5. According to news reports, up to 45 members (since 1989) of the Los
  6. Angeles Police Department have been disciplined for using for
  7. unauthorized use of police databases.  They have been freely digging
  8. up information on everyone from potential baby sitters to local
  9. celebrities.  There are reportedly some cases of using the databases
  10. to file false insurance claims as well.

  17. Privacy vs Computers Survey.
  18.  
  19. Equifax's June '92 update to their "Consumers in the Information Age"
  20. study shows some interesting survey results.  Of the 1200+ people
  21. surveyed, 80% said that computers improved the overall quality of
  22. life, but nearly 70% agree that present uses of computers threaten
  23. their personal privacy.

  25. Other results include:
  26.      - Just over 75% worry that consumers have lost
  27.      all control over how businesses use and circulate personal
  28.      information.
  29.  
  30.      - About half see no signs of improving this, saying that
  31.      protection of individual consumer data will weaken over the next ten
  32.      years.
  33.  
  34.      - Almost 70% agree that if privacy is to be preserved, the use
  35.      of computers must be sharply restricted in the future.
