  6.     ShakespeareÆ King Lear is a story of treachery and 
  7.   deceit.  The villainy of the play knows no bounds.  Family
  8.   lines are ignored in an overwhelming quest for power.  This
  9.   villainy is epitomized in the character of Edmund, bastard
  10.   son of the Earl of Gloucester.
  11.     Edmund is displayed as a " most toad-spotted 
  12.   traitor."  When we first see Edmund, he is already knee 
  13.   deep in treachery.  His need for power has already clouded
  14.   his mind to the extent that his first act is a double-
  15.   cross  of his own brother.  Edmund composes a false letter
  16.   to his father implicating his brother, Edgar in a plot to
  17.   kill Gloucester.  Edmund then goes to Edgar and convinces
  18.   him to run away.  Edgar, like his father is easily deceived,
  19.   and runs. 
  20.     EdmundÆs  evil trickery continues to increase in its
  21.   cruelty until  he commits an inconceivable crime.  Edmund
  22.   has reached a point in his pursuit of power that he will
  23.   stop at nothing to gain more.  He writes another letter.
  24.   This one is similar to the first, except instead of 
  25.   implicating his brother to his father, it implicates his 
  26.   father in a plot with France to kill The Duke of Cornwall.
  27.   The King decides that GloucesterÆs supposed treachery 
  28.   cannot be tolerated and orders that his eyes be torn out.
  29.   At this point, Edmund seems to be unequivocally evil.  
  30.   This is undoubtedly false.
  31.     Two of the other characters of the play, Goneril and
  32.   Regan surely equal EdmundÆs ferocity in their quest for 
  33.   power. Our first glimpse at the two surely begins to prove
  34.   that fact. In this scene, the King asks that each of his 
  35.   three daughters profess their undying love to him before 
  36.   he distributes parts of the kingdom to them.  Goneril and
  37.   Regan both, unlike their sister Cordelia who is to true of
  38.   heart to sink to such a level, give incredibly pompous 
  39.   speeches telling of how great their love for their father 
  40.   is.  The speeches, as we soon find out, are total lies.  
  41.   As soon as they receive their land, the two, accompanied 
  42.   by their husbands, join forces, and, using their newly 
  43.   found power, strip their father of all power.  They used 
  44.   their fatherÆs own need for affection to manipulate him 
  45.   and take his power.  This is indeed an act worthy of the 
  46.   most disgusting of personÆs.
  47.     Having taken this very quick glimpse into King Lear
  48.   shows us a very good reason for both Goneril and Regan to
  49.   be attracted to Edmund.  Edmund shares their ambition-power.
  50.   He shares their strength-treachery.  And he is possibly 
  51.   the only person more evil than they are.  Evil has a 
  52.   tendency to align itself with evil.  In its constant quest
  53.   to triumph over good evil unites to gain power.  The two 
  54.   daughters follow this pattern.  They are instinctively 
  55.   drawn to the pure evil that emanates from EdmundÆs very 
  56.   being.  Their attraction to Edmund is merely a symptom of 
  57.   their quest for power.
