The time of circumcision varies, it may be a few minutes after the child is born or several years later. Often there will be some celebrations which accompany the festival and sometimes sweets will also be distributed.
In some sub-Saharan countries the painful practice of female circumcision is still carried out, though this is becoming increasingly rare.
