  4. The following is a tutorial for USA-CRYPTO.  In it we 'walk-through' solving
  5. cipher #1 from the database.  It is designed to demonstrate the operations of
  6. USA-CRYPTO, as well as to introduce anyone to some methods for solving
  7. cryptograms.

  43. <Y> retrieves the cipher text.  This is a big cipher; almost all the screen is
  44. filled up, so we shouldn't have too much difficulty 'cracking the code'.

  72. 1.  First step is to call up the frequency window <F7>.  From it we see that B
  73. is the most frequent cipher letter.  It's therefore a good guess that it
  74. represents a plaintext E (the most frequent letter).

  103. some hints about standard frequencies of letters and short words.  The examples
  104. are given in decreasing frequency (e.g., A is the most frequent 1 letter word).

  132. Just starting to solve the cipher, the cursor is on the master plaintext line in
  133. the upper left corner.  Move the cursor over to just above B, and type E.  All
  134. the occurrences of cipher=B (41 according to the frequency window), fills in E.

  161. 2.  Once we've guessed where E is, we usually look for three letter words
  162. ending in E.  There are many, but the most probable is plaintext THE.
  163. Noticing we have cipher=QEB several times, its probable that cipher=QEB stands
  164. for plaintext=THE.  Move the cursor above any QEB, and type THE (the E was
  165. already there from the first substitution).

  193. 3.  Looking at two letter cipher words, we have TB & LC & FK; several LC's;
  194. looking at the frequency window help screen, we see that plaintext=OF is the
  195. most common 2 character word.  Type OF just above any cipher=LC.
  196.  
  197. 4.  On line #4, just after the comma, we have a 2 letter word ending with O.
  198. A common 2 letter word would be TO; move the cursor to that position and type
  199. T.  Oops, the buzzer and error message, show we've already used T (in THE).
  200. Since we really like the looks of THE, we'll select any key to remove the
  201. error message, and look for more likely entries.

  229. 5.  On line #2 at the far right, we have a 3 letter word FO_, suggesting
  230. plaintext=R as the substitution for cipher=O.  Move the cursor; make the
  231. entry.  I like the looks of "FOR THE", a likely phrase fragment; also repeated
  232. late in line 4.

  234. 6.  Looking for a single letter word, in line #1 we have cipher=X.  The most
  235. probable 1 letter word is A; make the substitution.
  236.  
  237. 7.  looking at the little 2 letter word in the middle of the line #1
  238. (cipher=FK).  Looking at the frequency window for both those letters, shows
  239. they are both high frequency (22, 19).  <F1> brings up the help window and
  240. both I and N are among the 6 most frequent letters, and IN is a high frequency
  241. 2 letter word; move the cursor and type plaintext= IN above cipher=FK.

  243. 8.  On lines 3 and 4 we have cipher=AN_.  This could be plaintext=AND.  Make
  244. the entry of plaintext=D over either cipher=A.

  273. substitution, we could move the cursor to the space between O and R, <F9> would
