TUTORIAL.DOC USA-CRYPTO 08/01/93
The following is a tutorial for USA-CRYPTO. In it we 'walk-through' solving
cipher #1 from the database. It is designed to demonstrate the operations of
USA-CRYPTO, as well as to introduce anyone to some methods for solving
cryptograms.
SOLVING CIPHER #0001:
Select <F5> to bring up the Entry Selection Window. Select 'Cipher from USA-
CRYPTO database.' Then enter Cipher Number 1.

filled up, so we shouldn't have too much difficulty 'cracking the code'.

1. First step is to call up the frequency window <F7>. From it we see that B
is the most frequent cipher letter. It's therefore a good guess that it
represents a plaintext E (the most frequent letter).

are given in decreasing frequency (e.g., A is the most frequent 1 letter word).

the occurrences of cipher=B (41 according to the frequency window), fills in E.

2. Once we've guessed where E is, we usually look for three letter words
ending in E. There are many, but the most probable is plaintext THE.
Noticing we have cipher=QEB several times, its probable that cipher=QEB stands
for plaintext=THE. Move the cursor above any QEB, and type THE (the E was
already there from the first substitution).

3. Looking at two letter cipher words, we have TB & LC & FK; several LC's;
looking at the frequency window help screen, we see that plaintext=OF is the
most common 2 character word. Type OF just above any cipher=LC.
4. On line #4, just after the comma, we have a 2 letter word ending with O.
A common 2 letter word would be TO; move the cursor to that position and type
T. Oops, the buzzer and error message, show we've already used T (in THE).
Since we really like the looks of THE, we'll select any key to remove the
error message, and look for more likely entries.

5. On line #2 at the far right, we have a 3 letter word FO_, suggesting
plaintext=R as the substitution for cipher=O. Move the cursor; make the
entry. I like the looks of "FOR THE", a likely phrase fragment; also repeated
late in line 4.
6. Looking for a single letter word, in line #1 we have cipher=X. The most
probable 1 letter word is A; make the substitution.
7. looking at the little 2 letter word in the middle of the line #1
(cipher=FK). Looking at the frequency window for both those letters, shows
they are both high frequency (22, 19). <F1> brings up the help window and
both I and N are among the 6 most frequent letters, and IN is a high frequency
2 letter word; move the cursor and type plaintext= IN above cipher=FK.
8. On lines 3 and 4 we have cipher=AN_. This could be plaintext=AND. Make
the entry of plaintext=D over either cipher=A.

15. Now it's time to lean back and bask in the glory of another USA-CRYPTO job
well done!
Looking at the plaintext master line in the upper corner, we see the solution
set to be the alphabet shifted over 3 spaces. Julius Caesar was said to use
this shifted cipher. Cryptologists refer to this as a 'Caeser 3' cipher.
Cipher #1 is the only USA-CRYPTO database cipher using the Caesar cipher
substitution. All others use a randomly generated solution set.
Good Luck!
