READ1ST.DOC USA-CRYPTO V1.1 08/01/93
WHAT IS USA-CRYPTO?
USA-CRYPTO is a program for presenting and solving substitution
ciphers (cryptograms). For more general information about
cryptograms and cryptography, see READLATR.DOC.
USA-CRYPTO is a tool and a game. As a tool, it is useful in
solving cryptograms entered in code from other sources
(newspapers, magazines, spies, etc.). As a game, USA-CRYPTO
includes Cipherfiles of pre-coded ciphers ready for solving.
USA-CRYPTO runs under DOS & requires about 300KB RAM.
USA-CRYPTO can run on a PC network (see NETWORK.DOC).

INSTALLATION:
This document is created by running the (PKWARE) self
extracting zip file CRYPTOSW.EXE. The extraction process
should have created 14 files in the current directory, each
file displaying a '-AV' (authentication verification). The
extraction process should also conclude with an authentication
phrase:
Authentic files Verified! # PFB443
Unicorn Systems Associates
The above phrase authenticates the file (CRYPTOSW.EXE) as the
virus-free original file.
If the files have been unzipped by someone else, re-run
CRYPTOSW.EXE and verify the above authentication phrase.
If the files have been unzipped by someone else, and
CRYPTOSW.EXE is missing, then proceed at (probably minimal)
risk based on the integrity of your supplier. The alternative
is to get another copy of CRYPTOSW.EXE.
The files created by the extraction (CRYPTOSW.EXE) process are:

manager and the CRYPTO11.EXE.
*CRYPTO11.EXE - the program file.
*CRYPTO11.HLP - Text for display in the help windows.
*CRYPTODB.BTR - Btrieve database of encrypted ciphers.
*BTRIEVE.EXE - Run time module for Btrieve record manager.
REGISTER.DOC - Registration form for USA-CRYPTO (send with
$20 fee to receive the latest version of USA-
CRYPTO, and a cipherfile (75 ciphers).
TUTORIAL.DOC - Print this; then walk-thru a solution of
cipher #1.
READLATR.DOC - Helpful hints/info. (optional)
VENDOR.DOC - Instructions to shareware vendors.
NETWORK.DOC - Particulars about network operation & site
licenses.
CRYPTO-N.BAT - Network batch file for starting USA-CRYPTO.
USAINFO.DOC - A description of Unicorn Systems Associates.
AVEXTRA.TXT - File containing address data for
Authentication Verification.
* denotes files required for operation.
OPERATION:
USA-CRYPTO requires about 300KB of disk, and about 300KB of
RAM. This version will work off a floppy disk, but database
operations, help panel retrieves, etc. do suggest loading on
even a slow old hard disk. Testing on a 5 year old 286/12
showed reasonable response times. Obviously, faster is better.
CRYPTO.BAT starts the Btrieve record manager (needed for the
database ciphers) and the CRYPTO11.EXE program. The program
unloads Btrieve on exit.
In a network environment, CRYPTO-N.BAT starts SHARE, Btrieve,
and the CRYPTO11.EXE program. (see NETWORK.DOC)
All the screens show function prompts along the bottom.
From any field, <F1> will show help information about that
field. A second <F1> will show information about the screen.
<Esc> from any location backs out of the field/screen
(sometimes with an additional [y/n] prompt).
The information window sequence (which performs an automated
de-cryption at program startup) can be shortened by modifying
the start-up bat file (CRYPTO.BAT or CRYPTO-N.BAT). Add the
parameter QUICKLOGO at the end of the CRYPTO11 execution line
(e.g., CRYPTO11 quicklogo).
