Universal Hint System
Revision 91a
UHSDOS.ZIP Distribution License
(October 10, 1993)
A. Shareware Vendors
[1] The term "shareware vendor" (or simply "vendor") refers to any person or
organization that charges for distributing programs by copying them to any
form of tangible media now or subsequently known, either for profit or
non-profit purposes.
[2] Distribution through retail and wholesale stores requires specific
written permission.
[3] Additional files may be distributed on the same media as this archive
only if these files are UHS hint files, readers, and compilers, or are files
included by the vendor on most or all of its disks to meet specific
distribution needs (i.e., decompression software or installation batch files).
[4] All files in this archive must be distributed on a single unit of
electronic media, such as a floppy disk. No distributor may charge more than
$8 US for this archive.
[5] Vendors who distribute UHS files on separate disk(s) from this archive
may not combine any UHS files with files that related to the UHS or that are
not created by the vendor to meet its distribution needs. Vendors' entire
collection of UHS files must be stored on a reasonably small number of disks;
distribution of hint files over excessive numbers of disks is prohibited. No
more than $8 US may be charged for any disk containing UHS files. These terms
are a condition of distribution of this archive and apply to all UHS files
written by any hint author.
[6] This program must clearly be labeled as shareware, either in a specific
description, or in a general disclaimer that appears in the vendor's
advertising materials. Vendors must state that this program require separate
payment to the author if users find it useful.
B. Bulletin Board Systems
[1] Any bulletin board system that carries the UHS or related files must be
open to anyone who desires access and follows membership rules established
by the BBS operators.
[2] No BBS may distribute this archive if it charges special fees to access
any UHS-related files. Hourly fees and/or a flat fee may be charged, as long
as there is no surcharge for access to the UHS.
[3] SysOps are encouraged, but not required, to notify me once they have
posted the UHS to their bulletin board. I have often been asked by users for
a list of BBSs that carry the UHS, but I cannot give these users any
information unless SysOps first contact me.
[4] Addition of any files to this archive is prohibited.
C. General Requirements
The following requirements apply to both bulletin board systems and shareware
vendors, and are in addition to any specific requirements for either bulletin
boards or shareware vendors listed in this document.
[1] "Distributor" refers to either a shareware vendor or bulletin board.
[2] All files in this archive must be distributed unmodified, except in the
format used to compress this archive. A complete list of files to be
distributed may be found in the file READMEUH.
[3] The author retains exclusive rights to this archive, including all
intellectual property rights and the rights to distribution of this program.
This license grants distributors who follow all the terms contained in this
document only a non-exclusive non-transferable right to distribute files in
this archive.
[4] Right to distribute this archive may be terminated by written notice, and
distributors must stop distributing this archive 45 days after the date of the
notice. Termination of the right to distribute does not affect distributors'
other duties in this license.
[5] Giving of this program to any distributor does not imply consent to any
of the distributor's own terms that are in addition to or conflict with the
terms of this license. Amendments to this license must be agreed to
explicitly in writing by the author and a representative of the distributor.
[6] No one may distribute any materials available to only registered users of
these programs, including registration codes or any files or programs clearly
labeled as reserved for registered users, nor may distributors offer to accept
registration fees for this program without specific written permission.
D. Related Files
Any distributor who follows the terms of this agreement shall be granted
permission to distribute all publicly available files relating to the UHS that
I have written or edited (as long as the copyright is in my name). Files
which are intended only for registered users or are otherwise not designed for
public distribution are not included in this permission.
E. Suggested Descriptions
These descriptions are suggestions for both vendors and BBS sysops. The lack
of any reference to the term shareware in these descriptions does not grant
vendors the right to omit these references in their own advertisements or
catalogs.

Brief Description:
The Universal Hint System gives you hint-book style clues for many popular
computer games; hints range from subtle clues to full answers. You are only
shown the hints and maps that you want, so your game is not needlessly
spoiled. This archive includes both a DOS prompt version and a demo of a TSR
version that will run from inside most of your favorite games. Registration
gives you the right to use the entire collection of over 65 hint files.
Long Description:
The Universal Hint System gives you hint-book style clues for many popular
computer games. All of the questions that you are likely to have while
playing a game are presented in a menu format, and you can select only the
hints that you want so your game is not spoiled. Every question has hints
ranging from subtle clues to complete answers to give you a chance to solve
puzzles on your own. Two versions of the UHS are included in this archive: a
character-based GUI version that runs on all PCs from the DOS prompt, and a
demo of a TSR version that will activate itself with a single keystroke from
inside most games. Some hint files also use graphics to display maps or other
helpful diagrams that can be selected as any other hint. The shareware
registration fee of $10-25 allows you to use the entire collection of over 65
hint files.
"I heartily recommend the Universal Hint System as an adventurer's resource
par excellence." -- Computer Gaming World, October 1993.
