Episode 1: City Under Siege
Filename: !!STORM1.ZIP
I've always been hard pressed to find a game that would
hold my interest for more than 10 minutes or so .. Every
morning Robocomm downloads the newest games, and most last
all of 2 hours on my hard drive, if that. Every once in a
while though, one comes along that gets me hooked. Space
Chase is one such game.
Space Chase Episode 1 was made with the highly
successful Commander Keen/Duke Nukem style graphics and
scrolling. Safari calls their version of the technique
"parallax scrolling" .. Whatever they call it, they did a
fine job.
In Space Chase, you are Jason Storm, born on a small
planet in Galaxy 239, who joins the Marines to get out of
farm life. After becoming so good in Special Forces, people
in high places began to get worried, and eventually Jason
Storm stepped on too many toes and scared them too much.
Jason has this urge to stick his nose in other people's
business, and it pays well for him.
Your mission in Space Chase is to track down and
destroy the leaders of Evil Guys, Inc., and keep them from
taking over the government. In short, blow up anything that
moves.
Theo Bishop did a commendable job on the Musical
Scores, with an original tune playable through a Sound
Blaster or compatible card for each level. Unfortunantly
though, the game's other sounds are through the PC speaker
only. Many of the sounds seem to be very close to Keen/Duke
rehashes, but overall a good job was done. As for controls,
you have your choice of either the keyboard, a joystick, or
a Gravis Gamepad.
Space Chase is done up in 16 color EGA graphics, which
are very smooth scrolling. The controls, however, take a
bit of getting used to and on the jumpy side.
Safari follows other shareware game vendors in it's
selling of other episodes. Episode 1 is shareware, while
Episodes 2 and 3 are commercial. However, $30 + $4 shipping
will get you registered copies of all 3 games plus cheat
codes.
Overall I found this game to be fairly well done with
decent graphics and sound, although the keyboard jumpiness
took away from it a little.
Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars <*>
