CLEANING AND RESPOOLING INSTRUCTIONS
Rev 8/93
Now that you realize the necessity of your backups, it's time to
talk about the care and cleaning of your tape backup system.
Periodic cleaning of the end-of-tape sensor and read/write head
will help to keep your tape drive operating at its peak. These two
procedures are the only routine maintenance you need to perform.
CLEANING THE END OF TAPE SENSOR and READ/WRITE HEAD
When to Clean
1. After every 8 hours of tape operation, approximately 20
backups or restores.
2. Or, when dust accumulates.
3. Or, if a tape comes unspooled. The end of tape is detected by
light projected through a series of holes towards the end of
the tape. Dust, dirt or smoke blocking this light can cause
the tape to unspool, or wind to one side of the cartridge.
Although the tape can look as if it is damaged beyond repair,
most tapes can be respooled and often the data will still be
intact. Follow the instructions to respool your tape.
4. Or, when errors occur. Residue buildup on the read/write head
can cause the message: Caution - excessive read errors. Clean
read/write head -or- Replace tape cartridge to display.
Supplies You Will Need
1. Aerosol can of compressed air - purchased at an office supply
or computer store. CAUTION: Do not use shop air or air from
an oil-lubricated compressor.
2. Sponge-tipped swabs
3. 90% isopropyl alcohol. CAUTION: Do not use cotton swabs as
they may leave behind fibers that can amage the read/write
head. Do not use rubbing alcohol or any abrasive to clean the
head or apply a lubricant to any part of the drive.
To Clean the End-of-Tape Sensor and Read/Write Head
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Hold open the tape drive door.
3. Note the location of the sensor and read/write head. They are
approximately 2 inches back from the door.
4. Use the can of compressed air to blow the dust away from the
two areas.
or
Dip a sponge-tipped swab in 90% isopropyl alcohol and rub the
swab back and forth over the sensor and read/write head in the
direction of tape motion several times until it is shiny.
5. Let the read/write head dry completely before using the tape
drive.
RESPOOLING A TAPE CARTRIDGE
Your investment in tapes for your backup system is appreciated! To
retrieve tapes that have come unspooled, follow the outlined
procedure that follows. PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING
THIS PROCEDURE!
1. Remove the two or three screws from the cartridge base plate.
2. Place the cartridge on a flat surface in a clean area. While
firmly holding the metal base plate with one hand, carefully
remove the cover. It may be helpful to hold the door of the
tape down as it remains with the base plate.
3. Locate and carefully free the loose end of the tape. Wind all
but approximately 3-4 inches of tape on the full spool.
4. Thread the tape through its designated tape path using a fully
assembled cartridge as a model. The tape must be routed
around the tape guides, in the front of the tape capstan, and
in front of the guide pin next to the drive capstan. Be
certain that hands are clean. CAUTION: DO NOT allow any of
the cartridge components to lose their position as they can be
difficult to reposition properly.
5. Moisten the backside of the tape with freon or water and
attach to the empty tape hub. Turn the capstan a couple of
turns counter-clockwise until the tape is secure on the empty
tape hub. Make sure the tape clings to the tape hub rather
than traveling toward the tape capstan.
On some tapes it may be necessary to hold a finger on the top
of the tape hub to prevent the tape from riding up on the hub.
6. Hold one tape hub securely and turn the other slightly to
remove the slack in the tape.
7. Use a pointed object, such as a pen, to turn the belt capstan
counter-clockwise and watch for a set of two holes in the
tape. NOTE: Some tapes may unspool at the end of the tape
rather than the beginning, making it necessary to turn the
belt capstan in a clockwise direction. The first set of holes
should be about 12 inches (about 8 turns of the capstan) into
the tape.
Another 12 inches should reveal a second set of two holes and,
finally, a single hole should appear approximately 36 inches
(23 turns of the capstan) from the end of the tape. The tape
is wound sufficiently when this single hole becomes visible.
8. Make sure that the mirror is pushed all the way down on its
mounting posts then carefully replace the cover on the base
plate. Insert the screws in the base plate to complete the
assembly.
