  9. ARTISOFT ANNOUNCES NEW LANTASTIC INTERCHANGE(TM) SOFTWARE

  11.         (TUCSON, AZ -- September 14, 1993) -- Artisoft, Inc. 
  12. announced today that it has developed a new software product 
  13. that provides bridging and routing capabilities for 
  14. LANtastic(R) Local Area Network v5.0 users. The LANtastic 
  15. Interchange software will link LANtastic networks that are 
  16. running over dissimilar hardware, cabling and topologies -- 
  17. including Ethernet, Arcnet and Token Ring. This new software, 
  18. scheduled to begin shipping in fall 1993, will be priced at 
  19. $199 per segment.

  21.         "This new software will offer an extended level of 
  22. connectivity for our LANtastic network users. Not only can 
  23. they segment their existing networks to reduce traffic and 
  24. improve performance, but they can also link two separate 
  25. networks into a single network to share information, 
  26. peripherals and resources," commented Dave Hallmen, Vice 
  27. President of Sales & Marketing for Artisoft.

  29. Bridges Networks
  30.         The LANtastic Interchange software will enable network 
  31. interconnectivity between dissimilar hardware and cable 
  32. types, as well as all supported LANtastic network topologies 
  33. including 2Mbps, Ethernet, Arcnet, Token Ring and the 
  34. LANtastic Z(TM) network. For example, this connectivity can 
  35. provide a growth path for users of Artisoft's original 2Mbps 
  36. LANtastic network by allowing them to expand their existing 
  37. network with Ethernet nodes. To achieve this bridging 
  38. capability, users simply install the LANtastic Interchange 
  39. software, a 2Mbps network adapter and an Ethernet network 
  40. adapter on a designated network PC, which can be either a 
  41. workstation or a server. This will enable the two dissimilar 
  42. topologies to communicate on a single network.

  44.         The LANtastic Interchange software also extends the 
  45. LANtastic Z network from a two-user network to a fully 
  46. functional node on the network -- either locally or 
  47. remotely. Once connected, this node will have full access to 
  48. all resources on the network. When used in conjunction with 
  49. the LANtastic Interchange software, the dial-up capabilities 
  50. of the LANtastic Z network will also allow users to achieve 
  51. simple wide area networking between remote sites.

  53. Routes Packets
  54.         Using source and destination addresses to 
  55. differentiate between networks, the LANtastic Interchange 
  56. software will route data packets between networks, sending 
  57. each packet to the appropriate network segment along the 
  58. fastest and most efficient path, thus reducing network 
  59. traffic and improving performance.

  61.         A Learning mode will add flexibility to network 
  62. administration by allowing addresses to be grouped into 
  63. different tables that can be edited. Administrators can add 
  64. or remove node addresses from a table, save the table after 
  65. edits, or remove all addresses in order to build a new 
  66. table. Administrators can also assign a password to the 
  67. table to provide a level of security and isolate nodes on 
  68. the network to prevent them from forwarding packets. A 
  69. Statistics feature will allow administrators to monitor 
  70. network traffic by showing the number of packets sent, 
  71. received and discarded.
