1.2 - Introduction
ClickComm Communications Package
ClickComm is a software package that allows you to gain access to
another host system from a remote computer. ClickComm was designed
to work both as a standard communications package and a perfect
partner package for accessing The Online Sales Database/VisuaLink
Database System.
When you have accessed the Online Sales Door/VisuaLink, you will
have access to that computers database of information. As a
remote customer you will have the ability to view pictures of what
is in the database, place orders, and obtain as much detailed,
visual and/or text information that the host system has available.
This software package can help you open up a world of contacts,
dealers, and wholesalers that you never before dreamed of being
able to reach. It's inexpensive, easy to install, and a snap to use,
even if you have no data communications experience.
For the more technically inclined individuals, the software was
programmed using a combination of Turbo Pascal and Assembler. It
supports high-speed data transmission and operates in the MS-DOS
environment.
If you would like more information on The On-Line Sales Database/
VisuaLink Database System, please contact Perigee Software Corporation.

5.261 - DOS Shell
ClickComm allows the user to do a shell to DOS. This means you will
leave ClickComm in a state of pause and return to your operating
system. To return to ClickComm, and carry on from where you left off,
simply type EXIT at the command line.
When ClickComm performs a DOS shell it saves all system settings and
disables the interrupts. This does not mean that it hangs up the
modem, only that the modem is on "hold".
When shelling, ClickComm will use one of 3 methods, in the order stated
below. If the system will not support, or cannot use a method, it will
switch to the next. If it cannot use any of them it will send you an
error message and not shell to DOS.
1 - Swaps to EMS
2 - Swaps to XMS
3 - Swaps to DISK
- When ClickComm swaps to disk it creates a hidden file
called CLICK.SWP. If you are doing disk maintenance
through a shell from ClickComm. DO NOT erase this
file. The result of this type of action will vary.

│ Select the baud rate you wish to initialize Click Comm with. │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
5.321 - Baud
Baud rate is commonly used to mean bit rate, the number of bits
transferred per second. In actuality, this is incorrect. Baud
rate actually means the number of events per second that occur
in a communications line. Since an event can contain info on
more than one bit, such as with high speed modems, the baud rate
could be quite different than the bit rate.
At the serial port itself this analogy is quite correct.
5.322 - Data Bits
A byte of data can contain 5,6,7, or 8 bits. Most applications use
7 or 8 bits.
5.323 - Parity
Parity describes a bit checking scheme. When used, all of the bits
are added together and a final bit, called the parity bit, is added
such as the sum of all the bits is odd or even. The transmitter
calculates and sends the parity bit, whereas the receiver calculates
and compares the result against the parity bit sent. If the bit
is equal then transmission was successful.
5.324 - Stop Bits
Stop bits simply follow the data bits in a serial stream.
5.325 - Comports
Comports are simply the serial port # that has been assigned to your
modem.
5.326 - Buffer Size
The buffer size is the amount of memory you wish to allocate for
holding data as the system processes it. This definition will increase

5.36 - External Protocols
This module allows the user to define external file transfer protocols.
This is really a fancy menu system when you get down to it. The only
difference is that it will allow you to ask for prompts for filenames
and a command line parameter to the batch file that is being called.
This option could also be used for running programs other than
protocols.
What is an external file transfer protocol?
An external file transfer protocol is a protocol that is not built
into ClickComm but desired by the user.
How do I setup an external protocol?
Setting up an external protocol in ClickComm is quite easy.
1 - Read the documentation for the protocol.
2 - Create a batch file, with the commands for the protocol, that will
accept command line parameter if defined. All batch files must
reside in the ClickComm Directory.
3 - Fill in the external protocol values as defined below.

5.39 - ZModem Setup
This Module Allows you to setup the various Features of ZModem.
What is Zmodem?
Zmodem is a file transfer protocol that offers the best overall mix
of speed, features, and tolerance for errors. The Zmodem protocol
has many options and clearly was meant to have lots of room for
growth.
The purpose of the development of Zmodem was to provide a durable
protocol with strong error recovery features and good performance
over a variety of network types (switched, satellite, etc.). It
has generally achieved these goals and, therefore, should be the
protocol of choice whenever possible.

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
5.391 - Maximum Packet Size
The maximum number of data bytes in any one data subpacket.
5.392 - Window Size
This is an estimate of the turnaround delay in a Zmodem protocol.
Turnaround delay is the time, in milliseconds, required for the remote
system to acknowledge the last block. Generally, Zmodem doesn't have
any turnaround delay at all, since its data subpackets do not require
an acknowledgement. However, some Zmodem implementations may request
such
acknowledgements.
This setting would be useful when dealing with satellite transmissions.
5.393 - Time Out Period
This value describes how long Zmodem will routinely wait for the next
character in a sequence. It does not control how long Zmodem will wait
for the initial handshaking packet.
5.394 - Time Out Tries
This value describes how many time outs Zmodem will sustain before
aborting the session.
5.395 - Save Mode
These constants are used to specify the desired file management options
governing received files. The default setting is Transfer Always.
5.396 - Resume Downloads

The dialing directory is used to store the names, numbers, and settings
for the various systems you call. This database will handle up to 300
entries.
One of the benefits of the dialing directory is the resizing/moving
capabilities of the window. With this type of implementation you
can resize or move the window in such a way as you could scroll
through the database and also check if the number you are looking
at in the terminal screen already exists.

6.0 - Protocols
The following protocols are supported by ClickComm:
ASCII
This protocol is not often used. It is just a straight text/ASCII
transfer protocol. The definitions for this protocol depend upon the
definitions of the host system.
XModem/XModemCRC
This is one of the original binary file transfer protocols. If all
else fails usually this will work. This uses 128 byte packets.
XModem1k
This is the same as XModem/XModemCRC except it uses 1024 byte
packets.
XModem1kG
This is the same as XModem1k except it does not perform error
correction. This should only be used on clean communication
lines with error correcting modems connected at both ends.
YModem
YModem is basically the same as XModem1k except it allows
Batch transfers of files.
YModemG
YModemG is basically the same as XModem1kG except it allows
Batch transfers of files.
ZModem
ZModem is by far your best choice for binary file transfers.
For more information refer to section 5.39
Kermit
Kermit is used for systems that cannot handle certain circumstances.
For more information refer to section 5.3C

7.0 - Host/Script Mode Interaction
Starting a Script file is as easy as entering Terminal Mode, Pressing
Alt - F10 and entering the script name. Refer to section 7.02 for
creating a script file.
Section 7.03 shows an example of a script file.
ClickComm has a basic script language built into it. The scripts can handle
the following:
Host Mode
Goto Statements (based on line numbers)
Case statements
Automatic ASCII/ANSI display of file
Automatic ASCII/ANSI display of directory listings
Automatic ASCII/ANSI display of General Text files
Shells to Doors. Creates a Standard DOOR.SYS file
Downloads to users using any of the protocols built into ClickComm
User Input
Maintaining a database of users information and passwords
password verification
The following is a list of the commands that are valid for a ClickComm Script:
7.01 - ClickComm Script File Command Statements
There is only one file that must exist if using protocols. PROTS.HST.
This is the menu for protocols.
hostmode - Sets ClickComm into Host Mode
goto(??) - Tells ClickComm Host to Goto to Line Number ??
dfile(fn) - Displays file (fn) to screen with no pauses
input(txt |ABQ) - displays the prompt 'txt' to screen and prompts user
A ?? for a key selection. The system will only accept the
B ?? characters listed after the | sign. In this case the
Q ?? valid keystrokes are ABQ.
The next ?? lines after the input statement must be
the corresponding characters followed by a spaces and
then the line number to goto.
You can only use characters A-Z for input keys.
filelist(fn) - This option displays a file and after every 24 lines
displayed it will prompt the user for:
'Enter = More, S = Stop, D = Download'
if 'S' is pressed it will exit from that file display
and process the following line. If Enter is pressed it
will continue on with the listing. If 'D' is pressed
it will display the file PROTS.HST and allow the user
to select 1-8 or Q.
1 - ASCII
2 - XModem/XmodemCRC
3 - XModem1k
4 - XModem1kG
5 - YModem
6 - YModemG
7 - ZModem
8 - Kermit
Q - Quit
bulllist(fn) - This option displays a file and after every 24 lines
displayed it will prompt the user for:
'Enter = More, S = Stop'
if 'S' is pressed it will exit from that file display
and process the following line. If Enter is pressed it
will continue on with the listing.
doorexit(fn) - This option tells the host to shell out, create DOOR.SYS
and execute the filename fn. This procedure also calls
its own copy of command.com.
enter - This option simply displays The prompt
'Press Enter to Continue......' and waits for the user
to hit enter.
getusername(txt |??) - This option displays the 'txt' value to the screen
and waits for the user to type in a value. It then
checks the users file, 'USER.CLK', for a matching
name. If a name is found, it will goto line ??.
getpassword(txt |??) - This option acts exactly the same as getusername
except that it does a check against the users
password. If it matches, the host will goto line
??.
username(txt) - This option asks the user for their username and stores
it to the users record.
addr1(txt) - This option asks the user for their address line 1 and
stores it to the users record.
addr2(txt) - This option asks the user for their address line 2 and
stores it to the users record.
addr3(txt) - This option asks the user for their address line 3 and
stores it to the users record.
city(txt) - This option asks the user for their city and stores it
to the users record.
prov(txt) - This option asks the user for their province/state and
stores it to the users record.
postal(txt) - This option asks the user for their postal/zip code and
stores it to the users record.
country(txt) - This option asks the user for their country and stores
it to the users record.
phone1(txt) - This option asks the user for their Phone #1 and stores
it to the users record.
phone2(txt) - This option asks the user for their Phone #2 and stores
it to the users record.
password(txt) - This option asks the user for the password they would
like to use on this system and stores it to the users
record.
writeuser - This option tells the host to write the users record to
the 'USER.CLK' database.
done - This option tells the host to hangup and reset the modem.
end - This statement must be the last entry in any script file.
This signifies the end of the script file.
7.02 - Creating a ClickComm Script
Creating a ClickComm Script is as easy as starting a text editor
and placing a series of commands into the text file. After you
have the script designed the way you wish. Save the text file into
whatever name you wish and run the compiler against it.
The compilers name is MAKESCR.EXE and the command line format is;
MAKESCR [filename.txt] [filename.scr]
ie: MAKESCR HOST.TXT HOST.SCR
When you hit Alt - F10 type in the name HOST.SCR.
If your script is not properly structured you will receive a runtime
error and ClickComm will halt operation. If this occurs just edit
the text file and fix the problem and re-compile the script.
7.03 - Example of a Script File.
The numbers beside each command are not included in the script file. They
are strictly for reference.
This is an example of a host script. This script supplies the users with
welcome screens, menus, file listings, bulletin listings, doors, and
user verification.
1 hostmode - Put ClickComm into host mode
2 goto(27) - Goto line 27
3 dfile(files.mnu) - display a file named (files.mnu)
4 input(File Area: |ABQ) - Get users input allowing ABQ

Tagging and Dialing of Entries
If you wish to Dial more than one entry, simply tag each of the
entries you wish to dial and hit enter, Click on dial, or Double
Click on the last entry you wish tagged. The system will then
cycle through the entries you have selected.
If you wish only to dial one number just place the highlight bar
on the entry desired and press enter. The system will then cycle
through this number until you either connect or abort the
operation.
Please Note: When you tag entries the system only dials the tagged
items. It does not dial the highlighted entry unless
it is also tagged.
Multiple Dialing will present you with a dialing Box. This allows
you multiple functions as well. For further information on the
dialing box, enter into the dialing box and press F1.

Avatar 0+ : Avatar Level 0 Emulation
Avatar 0+/ANSI : Avatar Level 0 Emulation with *ANSI Fallback
Avatar 1 : Avatar Level 1 Emulation
Avatar 1/ANSI : Avatar Level 1 Emulation with *ANSI Fallback
ANSI : Standard ANSI Emulation (ANSI.SYS)
ANSI-BBS : Standard ANSI Emulation with a couple of differences
Developed for Bulletin Board Systems.
On Status Bar 1 there is a display for the terminal emulation type
that is currently active. The following is cross reference for these
Types:
TTY : TTY
AVT0+ : Avatar 0+
AVT0+/F : Avatar 0+ with *ANSI Fallback
AVT1 : Avatar 1
AVT1/F : Avatar 1 with *ANSI Fallback
ANSI : ANSI
ANSI-BBS: ANSI-BBS
* - ANSI Fallback means that if you are in avatar mode and encounter
a switch to ANSI, Avatar will switch over to ANSI Emulation until
it resumes Avatar emulation. If you are on a system that uses
strictly avatar, it is faster to use a non Fallback emulation.
ANSI, ANSI-BBS
ANSI in its simplest terms is a way of controlling colon and
screen positioning of characters on your video screen.
TTY
TTY is a straight ASCII display of data to your screen. This means
no colon and no screen positioning. The best example of this is
to type an ASCII file to the screen.
AVATAR
A V A T A R
Advanced Video Attribute Terminal Assembler and Recreator
Avatar is a method of storing video control codes in a file sent to
the caller which was meant as a replacement of ANSI escape codes.
Its main advantages were:
o The codes are smaller than ANSI, thus needing less disk
storage space.
o The codes are in the binary form easily interpreted by the
computer (ANSI sequences use ASCII).
o The same file can be sent to callers who do or do not have
the ability of interpreting ANSI codes - in the former case
the codes are first translated to ANSI, in the latter they
are ignored.
The Two Levels of Avatar
Avatar is more than a video attribute controller. It is a protocol which,
if need be, can totally eliminate the interference of line noise. However,
this document is not concerned with the advanced topics of Avatar (which
no program is using as of this writing).
A full Avatar session with all its advanced features starts by exchanging
the AVINIT packets. The caller sends a packet which describes the video
capabilities of his/her system. It also contains the caller's name, password
and some other optional information. It also tells the BBS if the user is
calling in person or just emulating a BBS session with an Avatar terminal
program.
The called system (the BBS) replies to the AVINIT packet with a packet that
informs the user of his current status, e.g. you can stay till 16:30 GMT,
or you are denied access, or I am processing mail now but you can call back
at 10:43 GMT, etc.
Until such AVINIT packets are exchanged, only the Avatar commands that were
part of the original oANSI codes can be sent from the BBS to the caller.
The caller's term program should send no Avatar commands, with the exception
of function key codes, before the AVINIT packets are exchanged. This assures
that a BBS program which does not support full Avatar can still take
advantage of the faster transfer of video codes using Avatar as opposed to
ANSI escape sequences. It also permits the caller whose term program does
not support full Avatar but can interpret the basic codes to take advantage
of the term program's abilities.
The two levels of Avatar then are: a full session and a basic session.

10.0 - Mouse Interaction with Terminal Screen
One of ClickComm's strongest features is its mouse interaction with
the terminal screen. When a mouse is used with ClickComm, you can use
your right mouse button to click and drag across characters anywhere
on the screen. As you do this you will see that section of the screen
being highlighted. Once you let go of the right mouse button,
ClickComm will send those characters to the host system. Depending on
the interaction mode, ClickComm will also add a carriage return,
(Enter), on the end of the character(s).
ClickComm has 3 modes of interaction:
Off : No Interaction at All
Click : Allow Click and Drag but do not send a carriage return
Click/CR: Allow Click and Drag and send a carriage return
Why do I need this functionality?
This ability of ClickComm makes it easier for the handicapped to
access the world of communications and it also makes it easier to
do things like flag files and select menu options.

11.0 - Hardware/Software Flow Control, and others
There are 2 types of Hardware Flow Control available in ClickComm and
1 type of software flow control.
Software Flow Control
XON/XOFF
This is a data flow control method. It is Software based. This
simply allocates a data buffer in the system memory. When the buffer
becomes 75% full it sends a signal to the other system to stop the
data flow. Once the buffer is down to 25% it then sends another
signal to resume the data flow.
Hardware Flow Control
CTS/RTS
CTS: Clear to Send
RTS: Request to Send
This is a hardware flow control method. This uses a data buffer that
exists in your modem hardware. When the buffer becomes 90% full it
sends a signal to the other system to stop the data flow. Once the
buffer is down to 10% it then sends another signal to resume the data
flow.
DTR/DSR
DTR: Data Terminal Ready
DSR: Data Set Ready
This is a hardware flow control method. This uses a data buffer that
exists in your modem hardware. When the buffer becomes 90% full it
sends a signal to the other system to stop the data flow. Once the
buffer is down to 10% it then sends another signal to resume the data
flow.
Other Definitions
DCD - Data Carrier Detect
This is a hardware register that gets set high when your modem has
made a connection with another modem. This allows ClickComm to
determine whether it is still connected.

12.0 - Serial Port Pinouts
PC, AT, and PS/2 serial ports provide connections in two different formats:
9-pin and 25-pin. Typically, the documentation supplied with your serial
port boards will describe the type of connector required and a diagram of
the pin designations. Just so that you'll have such information handy in
one place, we provide standard connector diagrams below:
