STAR MENU
Star Menu has been designed as a convenient DOS-based menuing program. It has
the capability of running virtually any executable program (with an EXE, COM,
or BAT extension). It also has the capability of loading different sets of
autoexec.bat & config.sys boot files into the root directory, to allow
convenient rebooting into any desired environment. This feature is especially
useful to load optimized Microsoft Windows-specific drivers when running
Windows, and to then to re-load a different set of optimized DOS-specific
drivers when running DOS applications. Star Menu can also use multiple line
commands (DOS commands, programs, etc.) similar to a DOS batch file.
Note that a hard disk caching program (such as Smartdrive included with DOS)
will greatly speed up disk-intensive programs such as Star Menu, and is
strongly recommended.
STAR MENU FEATURES:
* Runs virtually any executable program with a convenient menu to
choose programs from
* Rebooting feature allows easy changing of environments using
different sets of autoexec.bat & config.sys files
* Multiple command lines supported
* All hard drive types supported, including Stacker & Doublespace
* Floppy drives supported
* Star Menu can be installed on either hard of floppy drives (great

Installation
To install Star Menu, simply change to the drive and/or subdirectory where the
Star Menu files are located, and run the install program as shown below:
Installing from floppy A at the DOS prompt, type in the following:
A: [and hit enter]
INSTALL [and hit enter]
Installing from floppy B at the DOS prompt, type in the following:
B: [and hit enter]
INSTALL [and hit enter]
Installing from subdirectory D:\XYZ
at the DOS prompt, type in the following:
D: [and hit enter]
cd\XYZ [and hit enter]
INSTALL [and hit enter]
The install program will prompt for the hard drive to install Star Menu on to,
and the subdirectory name (which will contain the Star Menu files). The
default hard drive is "C", and the default subdirectory name is "STARMENU";
press enter only when prompted to use these defaults. If you are re-installing
Star Menu or upgrading from a previous version, the install program will not
overwrite the data files without asking first (only the old executable files
are overwritten automatically). The install program will also prompt for a
video type, which can also be modified in the Config section of Star Menu at
any time later.
After Star Menu is installed, change to the drive and subdirectory where it
was installed and type "SM" to run Star Menu as shown in the example below.
Assuming default drive/subdir:
at the DOS prompt type in the following:
C; [and hit enter]
cd\STARMENU [and hit enter]
SM [and hit enter]
To avoid having to manually change to the Star Menu drive/subdir., for the
above example add "C:\STARMENU;" to the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file (consult your DOS manual for further information on modifying
autoexec.bat files).
Configuring Star Menu
To configure the main Star Menu options, hit function key F1 at the main menu
screen. This will allow you to change video and printer types, change program
colors displayed, set the computer date & time, toggle the mouse on & off,
enter a Star Menu main system password, configure the top level menu group,
and select reboot options.
Star Menu Setup
To access the Star Menu setup screen, hit function key F2 at the main menu
screen. This section will allow setup of custom programs, groups, and
multi-line commands. Note that even with a hard disk caching program, the
initial disk scan used with the Add and Insert options will be relatively
slow. Once the subdirectory structure is stored however, repeated attempts
will be much faster.
Use the Add option to add new menu items for a given group. Menu items may
consist of any combination of executable programs (EXE, COM, or BAT files),
groups (e.g. Utilities, DOS Commands, Games, Applications, etc.) and
multi-line commands (similar to DOS batch files). Up to 200 menu items can be
added to one group; the number of possible groups is limited only by disk
space, so that a massive array of groups with literally millions of files is
possible.
Use the edit option to edit menu items. The insert menu item is identical to
Add except that as implied the program, group or multi-line command may be
inserted anywhere in the group, at the insert number specified. Use the create
option to create new groups and multi-line command files. Use the load option
to load groups. The view option allows viewing the multi-line commands. The
mouse option toggles the mouse on and off.
NOTE: A MUCH MORE DETAILED USERS MANUAL INCLUDING EXAMPLES OF ACTUAL STAR MENU
SCREENS IS AVAILABLE WHEN BECOMING A REGISTERED USER.

** LATEST STARMENU INFORMATION **
Installing Star Menu From ZIP File
----------------------------------
To install Star Menu from a zip file:
1. copy the STARMUxx.ZIP file to a subdirectory or a floppy disk
2. use PKUNZIP to decompress all of the files by typing
"PKUNZIP STARMU*.ZIP" at the DOS prompt (requires pkunzip.exe
program ver 2.x found on many BBS's)
3. type "INSTALL" at the DOS prompt
Using DOS 6.0 with DOUBLESPACE AND STAR MENU 2.0 or 2.01
--------------------------------------------------------
If you are using DOS 6.0 AND you are using the DOUBLESPACE disk compression
software included, Star Menu must be installed onto the uncompressed drive,
usually designated as drive H. This is necessary because of the nature of the
Star Menu drive scanning and hard drive subdirectory scanning functions; the
"tricks" played by DOUBLESPACE to compress files interferes with the Star Menu
functions. Once Star Menu is installed onto the uncompressed drive, it will be
able to properly scan and run programs from all drives, regardless of whether
they are compressed or not.
Note that other disk compression products such as STACKER do not
cause any problems (Star Menu can be safely loaded onto a Stacker compressed
drive).
Using DOS 6.0 with DOUBLESPACE AND STAR MENU 2.02
-------------------------------------------------
Star Menu 2.02 has been modified to work with DOS 6.0 AND DOUBLESPACE on
ANY drive, compressed or uncompressed. This eliminates the limitation
described above to put Star Menu only on the uncompressed drive.
Star Menu 2.01 New Features
---------------------------
The following new features and modifications have been included with Star Menu
version 2.01:
* Screen Saver bug fixed; if screen saver is disabled (timeout=0)
opening screen saver will be bypassed.
* New Add/Insert files option to move between file selection and
subdirectory selection screens using function key F8.
* New Quick Run program (Registered version only) option to move
between file selection and subdirectory selection screens using
function key F8.
* New Reboot option (CONFIG section) allows you to specify a drive
to copy the boot files (autoexec.xxx & config.xxx) to, usually
the A or C drives.
* Bug fix for the installation program drive scanning of floppy
disks; a cosmetic error would occur with the old version if only
one floppy drive was physically present (this only occurred on
some machines) during installation.
Star Menu 2.02 New Features
---------------------------
* New Environment display option! In the first line of your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file (autoexec.xxx Star Menu boot file), place
a "rem" statement along with an 11-character max description
of the boot file; for example, if you have a Star Menu boot
file named autoexec.win (and a corresponding config.win) which
loads all of the drivers for MS-Windows, add the following TOP
line using a text editor or word processor:
===> rem Windows 3.1 <=== **NEW LINE**
path c:\windows;c:\starmenu;...............
.
.
.
win
sm
Note that in the above example, Star Menu uses the first "rem"
line in an autoexec.bat file to determine the type of boot files
loaded. Also, in the above example "c:\starmenu" is added to the
path and after windows is run using "win", Star Menu will be
automatically run next using "sm".
* New F5 function key added to main selection screen to quickly
load any group; if a Star Menu system password is being used
(see CONFIG section, function key F1), the password will be
prompted for before Star Menu allows you to load a new group.
* Password prompt bug for groups on sub-groups (2nd level or lower
groups on which you wish to set a unique password) fixed.
* New F6 function key added to main selection screen to execute
screen saver immediately; note that this occurs unless the
graphics adapter chosen in SETUP is either type 1 or 7 (mono AT&T
or MDA). Also, if a Star Menu system password is being used,
Star Menu will prompt for it after any key is pressed to disable
the screen saver.
* More accurate display of alphabetic hotkeys added to main
selection screen.
* Star Menu modified to work with DOS 6.0 AND DOUBLESPACE; it is
no longer necessary to put Star Menu on the uncompressed H drive.
Star Menu 2.03 New Features
---------------------------
UNREGISTERED & REGISTERED VERSIONS:
* New display of free memory for CONFIG, SETUP, and INFO screens.
Note that when programs are run, Star Menu will UNLOAD itself from
RAM, making all free RAM available to the program to be run.
* Fixed Mouse bug; if mouse position (mouse cursor) was between
menu items and left mouse button was clicked, a "cosmetic" error
would bring you back to the main menu (no damage was done).
* New Viewer for multi-line commands in SETUP section (View option).
* Fixed cosmetic function key bugs
REGISTERED VERSION ONLY:
* New multi-level password option; 0=none, 1=password prompt for
screen saver only, 2=full password prompts (for CONFIG, SETUP,
LOADING GROUPS, SCREEN SAVER, EXIT TO DOS, and new DOSSHELL &
RUN/VIEW options below).
* New access directly to DOS (Shell) using function key F7 from the
main menu; Note that Star Menu is still loaded in RAM, simply type
"EXIT" at the DOS prompt to return to Star Menu. (This option can
be password protected with a level 2 password).
* New Run/View option using function key F8 from the main menu; this
allows for quick program "launching" or "running" by graphically
selecting the drive, subdir, and program. Also included is a file
viewer which allows graphical selection of files to be viewed (read).
(This option can be password protected with a level 2 password).
* New file viewing option available when ADDing or INSERTing a new
program; very handy feature allows you to read doc files before
selecting a program to put onto a menu.
Star Menu 3.0 New Features
---------------------------
UNREGISTERED & REGISTERED VERSIONS:
* Mouse support modified; if a mouse driver is found when Star Menu
is initially executed, the mouse is turned on and used; If desired,
it may be turned off in either the Setup or Config sections.
* Added mouse support for MAIN Menu function keys; if mouse cursor
is placed on a function key description line in the function key
box (e.g. cursor on F3-INFO) and the left mouse key is pressed, the
function will be executed as if the function key had been pressed!
* Added full mouse support to Config section; now possible to use mouse
to select virtually anything which can also be selected using the
keyboard.
* Added full support for floppy drives A & B.
* New Edit-enViron option, allows easy updating of autoexec.xxx boot
file description (used to specify environment description).
* Added "Esc" key option to backup one screen or exit to DOS on
all menu screens
* Minor bug fixes & modifications.
* Program layout modified slightly to improve "ease of use".
REGISTERED VERSION ONLY:
* File viewing during RUN/VIEW, ADD, or INSERT options modified so
that after a selected file is viewed, you are returned back to the
file selection box to select a new file, run a program etc.. You
may also return to the SUBDIR box to select a new subdirectory
(F8) or exit (F10 or Esc).
* Added full mouse support for RUN/VIEW section.
* New mouse-driven file viewer! (MUCH more convenient) Includes
horizontal & vertical cursor or mouse bars to allow quick and easy
side-to-side (0 to 132 columns) and top-to-bottom (1 to x lines)
movement.
* RUN/VIEW, ADD, and INSERT now fully support floppy drives A & B.
* New MOVE option allows moving menu items on any group (great for
customizing & organizing groups!).
* New SORT option allows alphabetical sorting of menu items for any
group by Description, Type, Path, or Filename!
* New COPY option allows menu items, groups, or multi-line commands
to be copied.
* New Command Line Interface using RUN/VIEW, allows easy program
execution, including switches etc. (e.g. "C:\DOS> chkdsk d:/f").
* New Command Line Interface (CMD LINE, function key F9) option
added to the Main Menu, allows execution of any DOS Command
(Star Menu will temporarily be de-loaded from memory to maximize
available memory) after which you will be returned to the Main
Menu.
* New BACKUP & RESTORE (BACKUP+, function key F10) option added
to the Main Menu, allows for PKZIP/PKUNZIP (BACKUP/RESTORE)
to be used to backup & restore drives and/or subdirectories.
NOTE #1: PKZIP.EXE & PKUNZIP.EXE must be in your DOS Path;
NOTE #2: Star Menu assumes no responsibility for PKZIP & PKUNZIP
(another excellent shareware program!); please follow the
instructions included with PKZIP for further information &
registration instructions, etc.
* New 386-specific version of Star Menu! If a 386, 486 or Pentium
CPU is sensed along with a math coprocessor during installation,
the 386-version of Star Menu will be installed (otherwise the
STD-version will be installed). The 386-specific version is
MUCH FASTER than the STD version of Star Menu!
