System requirements
-------------------
Minimal system requirements:
- IBM XT, AT, or compatible with 640K memory.
- A harddisk with at least 1MB free disk space.
- A Hercules, EGA or VGA compatible graphics card.
- A Microsoft or compatible mouse(driver).
- MS-DOS 3.1 or higher.
Installation
------------
To install Market View on your harddisk, just create an
appropriate directory (we suggest C:\MV) and copy the files from
the Market View disk to this directory.
The first time you use Market View, you have to specify
what type of graphics card you have. You do this by
using the command line option /G, followed by the name of
the appropriate driver. If you have a VGA card for example
you type:
MV /GVGA <ENTER>
You only have to do this once, since Market View stores the
last used graphics driver in MV.EXE.
When Market View is started the first time, it displays a
message that it can't find your options file MV.CNF.
Therefor it uses it's factory default settings, which should
be appropriate to start with.
When you select [Save defaults] Market View creates MV.CNF
for you, so the next time you start Market View you won't
see the message again. If you select [OK], then Market View
starts with the defaults but does not create the MV.CNF
file.
Registering
-----------
When you have a valid registration key for Market View, you have
to register your copy of the program by using the Register
option from the Help menu. Just type your registration name and
key and press the [Ok] button. When program is successfully
registered, you will be able to use all the features without
restrictions.
When you are not a registered user, you can register your copy
of Market View by using the REGISTER.FRM form included in the
Market View package.
Command line parameters
-----------------------
To view the possible command line parameters of Market View,
just type:
MV /? <ENTER>
behind the DOS prompt.
The following list is displayed:
usage: MV [/G<graphicsdriver>] [/C<configurationfile>]
[/D<desktopfile>] [/NORTPP] [/BATCH]
[[<set>.MVS] | [<object>.MVO]...]
Option Description
============================================================
/? Displays all optional command line parameters.
/G Selects the graphics screen driver to use.
Examples:
/GVGA
uses VGA.DRV as the graphics driver.
/GHGC.DRV
uses HGC.DRV as the graphics driver.
The driver name is patched in MV.EXE, so you only
have to use this command line switch once.
/C Selects the configuration file to use with this
Market View session.
Examples:
/CC:\MV\MV.CNF
selects the file C:\MV\MV.CNF as the configuration
file.
/C\TEST\MYCONF
selects the file \TEST\MYCONF as the configuration
file.
When no configuration file is given, MV.CNF in the
Market View program directory is used.
To check the current configuration file, select
Help/About... and then the [More...] button.
/D Selects the desktop file to use with this Market
View session.
Examples:
/CC:\MV\MV.DT
selects the file C:\MV\MV.DT as the desktop file.
/C\TEST\MYDT
selects the file \TEST\MYDT as the desktop file.
When no desktop file is given, MV.DT in the Market
View program directory is used.
To check the current desktop file, select
Help/About... and then the [More...] button.
/NORTPP When you select this parameter, Market View is
started with Real Time Price Processing (RTPP)
turned off.
/BATCH You can use this parameter when you start Market
View from a batch file. Market View waits until one
RTPP cycle is done and then exits. Use this
parameter only when RTPP is enabled.
NOTE: during a batch session, all keyboard and mouse
input is ignored (the screen saver works
normal).
<set>.MVS or <object>.MVO
You can autoload any number of objects and sets by
adding the filenames to the command line. The .MVO
and .MVS extensions are required.
Example:
MV /GVGA C:\MV\OBJECTS\OBJECT1.MVO D:\INDICES.MVS
This command line will autoload the object
C:\MV\OBJECTS\OBJECT1.MVO and the set
D:\INDICES.MVS on startup.
You can also select command line options by defining the MV
environment variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
Example:
SET MV = /GVGA /DC:\MV\MV.DT
You then can start Market View by just typing:
MV <ENTER>
NOTE: If command line parameters are given and a MV environment
variable is defined, then the environment variable settings are
overruled by the command line parameters.
Market View basics
------------------
Before you start working with Market View, a brief explanation
of the logic behind it is needed.
Market View can handle any sorts of price data. Anything which
has a price every day, can be managed with Market View. So all
investment object such as: stocks, bonds, options, futures,
precious metals, currencies, etc.. can be handled.
Market View handles all these investment items as objects. Every
object is stored in its own MVO file (MVO = Market View Object).
You can easily manage a large number of objects by creating a
MVS file (MVS = Market View Set). If you for example follow
Stocks, Bonds and Indices, you would like to create the sets:
STOCKS.MVS, BONDS.MVS and INDICES.MVS.
When you load a set, all objects defined in it are automatically
loaded.
A set is nothing more than a definition of where to find the
specified objects. You can store the objects contained in a set
in several directories without having trouble switching
directories when loading the objects all at once.
User interface
--------------
Market View is build around a mouse controlled Graphical User
Interface (GUI). All action takes place on the desktop. The
desktop always contains:
- the menu bar.
- windows, icons and dialog boxes.
- the trash can.
- the status bar.
The menu bar
------------
The menu bar contains the basic controls to the program. There
is a menu for file handling, settings, options, window
management etc.. Context sensitive menus will be added to the
right of the menu bar when needed.
To choose a menu item, just click on the menu title in the menu
bar and the menu will be displayed on the screen. Choose a menu
item by clicking on one of the items in the menu.
Market View supports 2 ways of menu control:
- Point and click.
- Click and drag.
With the first method you click on the menu title and than
release the mouse button. The item is chosen by clicking again
and releasing the mouse button with the mouse cursor on the
selected item.
With the second method, you click on the menu title and do not
release the mouse button but walk to the item you want to select
and release the mouse button on the selected item to choose the
menu item.
These 2 methods can be mixed whenever you like without changing
any settings.
Windows, icons and dialog boxes
-------------------------------
Market View has lots of different windows for data input,
viewing data etc.. Windows can be moved, minimized to icon,
zoomed and resized.
Icons are minimized windows that can be activated (opened) by
double clicking on the icon.
Dialog boxes are always fixed on the desktop (can't be moved),
and are always terminated by the use of a button in the dialog
box. You can't switch to another window or dialog box before
terminating the current one.
The trash can
-------------
The trash can is the only icon on the desktop that can't be
removed. It is used to remove all other windows (minimized as
icons). To remove a minimized window (icon), just drag the icon
onto the trashcan and release the mouse button.
The status bar
--------------
The status bar on the bottom of the screen always contains the
current date, time, free memory amount, keyboard indicators
etc..
File/New... dialog box
----------------------
The file/new dialog box is used to create new data elements such
as:
- Objects.
- Sets.
Just select the appropriate data type by clicking on one of the
radio buttons, enter the name for the new object or set in the
edit field and press the [Ok] button.
Shortcuts:
[Cancel]: <ESC>, <ALT+C>
[Ok] : <ENTER>, <ALT+O>
File/New.../Period dialog box
-----------------------------
When you create a new object, a second dialog box is drawn to
adjust the date period for the new object.
To change the number of days to be reserved for the new object,
just edit the "Length:" edit field in the "Period" section.
To change the start date, move the scrollbar in the "Period"
section. The start and end date is also shown in the "Period"
section.
To save the current settings for later use in this dialog, just
press the [Use as default] button. The current settings are than
copied to the default settings (you have to save the options
file before leaving the program).
Finally press the [Ok] button to go to the object settings
dialog box.
Shortcuts:
[Continue] : <ENTER>, <ESC>, <ALT+C>
[Use as default]: <ALT+U>
File/Open... dialog box
-----------------------
With this dialog you can load sets or objects. By default, it
will try to load sets. When you want to load objects, select the
objects data type by clicking on the "Object" radio button.
There are two ways to select the files you want to load:
1) Type the name of the file you want in the "Open filename:"
editor. It isn't necessary to specify an extension. After
pressing <ENTER> on your keyboard or clicking on [OK], the file
will be loaded.
2) Select the file (or files!) you want with the "Files:" list
box. Again, pressing <ENTER> or clicking on [OK] will load the
file(s). When you want to select all the files in the list box,
click on [Select all].
When you're not on the correct directory or drive, you can
specify it by using the "Open filename:" editor or by using the
"Directories:" list box using the same methods as described
above.
To save memory and have more objects in memory at the same time,
it is possible to load just a part of an object! You can select
the period of the object you want with the "Period" controls.
Use the "Length:" editor or its fine tune buttons to specify the
length of the period you want. When "Use current date" is
checked, the end of the period will always be the current date.
To specify an other period, use the scroll bar. The begin and
end date of the period are displayed beneath it. To quickly
select the complete time base, click on [compleTe].
When "Include objects in set" is checked, only a sets definition
will be loaded. The objects described in the set won't be
loaded.
It's possible to keep the following settings in the
configuration file: period, "Use current date" and "Include
objects in set". Simply click on "Use as default"
Shortcuts:
[Cancel] : <ESC>, <ALT+C>
[Ok] : <ENTER>, <ALT+O>
[Select all] : <ALT+S>
[Use as default]: <ALT+U>
File/Save
---------
The File/Save menu item can be used in Object editor and Object
graph windows.
When used in an Object editor containing a set, all the objects
which are modified in the set including the set definition
itself are saved. If the Object editor window only contains a
single object, the object is saved if it is modified.
When used in an Object graph window, the object which is
displayed in the window is saved if it is modified.
File/Save all
-------------
The File/Save all menu item is used to save all data in memory
that has been changed to disk.
Data elements which are not modified are also saved.

the 3 LPT ports, the 4 COM ports or to a file, just select the
appropriate output from the "Port" list box.
NOTE: When you print to a file, you a prompted for the filename
when the printing is started.
In the "setup string" section you can fill in a printer setup
string that is to be send to the printer before the printing is
started. You can send decimal codes to the printer by using the
'\' character, for example "\027" sends the escape code to the
printer (decimal codes are always 3 digits long).
After a print job is done, a form feed character is send to the
printer when the "add form feed" check box is checked.
File/Exit
---------
Use this menu item to quit the program. Market View will prompt
you for data that is not saved, so you never leave the program
without saving your data.
-----------
You can use this menu item to delete the contents of the log
viewer.
In the future the edit menu will be expanded to a full clipboard
interface.
Settings/Objects... dialog box
------------------------------
This dialog controls all the settings of an investment object.
The "Object" drop down list box contains all the objects
currently in memory. You can access all objects from this list
box.
The "Type" drop down list box contains the object type for the
current selected object. You can choose from the following
types:
- (unknown), select this type if the type is not in the
list.
- Bond.
- Currency.
- Future.
- Index.
- Investment fund.
- Option, Call.
- Option, Put.
- Precious metal.
- Share.
The "Decimals" section in this dialog contains the storage
significant decimals and the number of decimals to display. Just
edit the numbers in the edit fields by clicking the mouse on a
field or use the fine-tune buttons to the right of the edit
fields.
The "Currency" section handles the currency settings for the
current selected object. Edit the "Sign" field for the currency
sign (e.g. $, DM, FFr, C$ etc..). The currency sign can be
displayed before or behind the price. Choose "Prefix" for
before, and "Suffix" for behind the price.
The "Warnings" section sets the alert triggers for the object
editor window and the RTPP. There are three types of warnings:
- Based on a percentile difference (greater or equal) between
the previous price and the current price (range from 1% to
999%).
- Based on the current price being above a certain price.
- Based on the current price being below a certain price.
Edit the edit fields to change these settings or use the fine-
tune buttons for the percentile difference.
A value of 0 disables the above or below warnings (default).
Finally there are 4 text fields that add extra info to an
object:
"Description", explains the object is about (e.g. "Dow Jones
Index" for the DOWJONES.MVO object).
"Market", holds the home market of the objects, so for the
DOWJONES this is the "NYSE" (New York Stock Exchange), for
TOYOTA this will be the "Tokyo Stock Exchange".
"Country", holds the country where the home "Market" is located.
"Source", holds the price source, this can be for example a
"Newspaper", "Teletext" etc..
You can use the [Use as default] button to make all current
settings the default for later use.
Select the [Delete...] button to remove the current object (or
all objects) from memory (not from disk).
Select [Cancel] to discard all changes to the current object, or
[Ok] to accept.
Shortcuts:
[Cancel] : <ESC>, <ALT+C>
[Ok] : <ENTER>, <ALT+O>
[Use as default]: <ALT+U>
[Delete...] : <ALT+D>
Settings/Sets... dialog box
---------------------------
With this dialog you can insert and delete elements in a set or
whole sets. In the drop down list box is the current set
displayed. To pick another set, use the drop down list box.
The list box in the "Elements" rectangle lists all elements in
the current set. To insert an element before another element,
click on the 'before' element, click on <INS> and enter the name
of the to be inserted element in the "Name:" editor. After
pressing <Enter> the element is inserted. When the matching
object is in memory, it's path will be used as the elements
path. When it isn't in memory, the default objects directory
will be used. You can change the path of an element by selecting
the element and using the "Path:" editor.
Note: When you didn't specify a 'before' element, the new
element is inserted at the end of the elements.
An extremely handy button is [Quick set]. By clicking on this
button, all objects in memory will appear in alphabetical order
as elements in the current set.
To delete an element, select it and click on [Delete].
To see the settings of the belonging object in memory of an
element, select the element and click on [Settings...].
To delete the current set from memory, click on [deLete set...].
Note: The [Delete] and [Settings...] button won't function
unless an element is selected.
Because of the nature of the actions that can be done in this
dialog, there's no way to reverse the actions. So only [Ok] can
be used to terminate this dialog box.
Shortcuts:
[Ok] : <ESC>, <ENTER>, <ALT+O>
[Insert] : <ALT+I>
[Delete] : <ALT+D>
[Quick set] : <ALT+Q>
[Settings...] : <ALT+S>
[deleTe set...]: <ALT+T>
Settings/Teletext pages... dialog box
-------------------------------------
This dialog box controls where the RTPP handler can find the
price info you want to collect.
Teletext pages are scanned for price data according to the
MV_TT.DEF file in the Market View program directory.
This dialog box has direct access to MV_TT.DEF and although it
can be shared with the RTPP background process, it is
recommended that you start Market View with the /NORTPP
parameter or to use the Settings/RTPP enabled switch, when you
make large modifications to the Teletext page definition, else
the RTPP handler may get a little confused.
Each page definition can be stored in a separate file for easy
exchange with other users. Such files are also in the Market
View program directory and are called CHANNEL.NUM, where CHANNEL
is the channel where the definition is used for and NUM is the
Teletext page number.
A new page definition is created as follow:
- Click the [New] button to create a new page definition at
the end of the sequence.
- Change the "Channel:" field to the appropriate channel by
using the drop down list box.
- Select the appropriate page number in the "Page:" field.
- Sample a few sub pages by clicking the [Sample] button, to
determine the number of sub pages in this Teletext page. This
number must be entered in the "Total subpages:" field.
NOTE: The total number of sub pages for a Teletext page has to
be filled in correctly, else the RTPP will not work properly.
Pages that have no subpages are set to 1 sub page.
- Enter the number of minutes by which the page is refreshed
in the "Refresh:" field. This is the number of minutes
between successive requests to this page by the RTPP
handler.
Now everything is set up for setting up the recognition strings.
The RTPP handler scans all sub pages of a Teletext page from top
to bottom for recognition strings you give in the "Recognition:"
field.
When such a string is found, price data is collected at the
column position found in the "Position:" field, for a number of
characters found in the "Length:" field. The price string is
converted to a numeric value by using the decimal separator
found in the "Decimal separator field:". The price is stored at
the current date (except if the "Use previous date for price
data" field is checked) in the object file given in the "Object
file:" field.
NOTE: Be sure that the decimal separator ' ' is selected with
prices of the form: xx 1/2 or xx ½, the separator '.' with
prices of the form: x,xxx.xx and the separator ',' when handling
prices of the form: x.xxx,xx.
The most handy way to define the recognition strings is to
sample the sub page via the [Sample] button. When the page is
displayed in the "Sample page:" area, just select the
recognition string you want with the mouse. When you release the
mouse button, the [Recognition] and [Data] buttons can be used
to convert the selected string into the recognition string or in
position/length values.
NOTE: To give you a hand, Market View highlights all defined
recognition strings in a sample page pink and all price strings
blue, so you can easily see which objects are defined and which
are not.
NOTE: The use of the [Data] button will automatically fill in
the separator character found in data string.
NOTE: Make sure that you include one position after the price
string (for the 'x' character) if you want to use the automatic
generation of "ex. dividend" date labels.
NOTE: Be aware that when a recognition string appears more than
once in the sub pages of a Teletext page, they are both
processed. This can be noticed by a warning in the RTPP log
viewer window about the previous and current prices differing a
lot.

In this page sample the string "Mid El" appears twice. To avoid
double recognition select "EMid El" for the first object and
"Mid El " (with 4 trailing spaces) for the second object.
Note that the Teletext page definition is handled from front to
end by the RTPP handler. You can browse through the pages by
using the horizontal scrollbar.
Pages can be suppressed from processing by unchecking the
"Enable" checkbox in the page section (above the dotted line).
Each object search can be disabled by unchecking the "Enable"
checkbox in the object section (below the dotted line)
Use the [deLete] button to delete the current page from the

Note that when you fill in a sub page number in the "Subpage:"
field above the [Sample] button, the sample function will seek
for that specific sub page in stead of "any" sub page when you
fill in a 0.
Page definitions can be saved in separate files in the Market
View program directory for changing the order of RTPP or for
exchange with other users. Use the [ouT...] button with the
<CTRL> key to save all pages in one cycle.
To retrieve a saved page, specify the page and the channel at
the current page definition and press the [In...] button.

- Errors.
- Warnings and alerts.
- Processing information.
- Debug messages.
Use the check boxes to enable or disable the generation of a
certain message type.
NOTE: the generation of debug messages takes a lot of CPU time
and creates lots of data in the log file, so this can make your
machine very slow. Use these messages only if you are having a
problem and want to check every step taken by the RTPP handler.

support in Market View. This dialog box is also available if you
don't have a Teletext card or driver available since it doesn't
use these items.
To setup the channels, select a channel from the list box and
edit the "Channel name", "Recognition" and "Frequency".
The "Channel name" is a logical name that is used by Market View
to identify the channel.
The "Recognition" string must be a few characters from the
header line on that Teletext channel. This string must be chosen
in a way that there is only one "Channel name" possible.
The "Frequency" field is used to tune to a channel when you have
an embedded tuner on your Teletext card. This frequency is in
megahertz.
Use the "Pseudo tuner on LPT" field when you have tuning logic
attached to one of your parallel printer ports. When you don't
have such tuner, fill in a 0 to disable this feature.
Use the "Update system time from teletext" check box to enable
or disable adjustment of your computer time from teletext when
Market View starts.
In the "Update from channel" you can fill in a logical channel
name where the time has to be taken from (beware of time
differences between different counties).

The object graph window is used to display price flow graphs of
the objects loaded in Market View. You can open such a window by
using the Window/Open... dialog box. Just select "Graph" as the
window type and select one or more objects from the "Objects"
list box and press the [Ok] button.
The object graph window can contain up to 8 lines
simultaneously. You can change the attributes of each separate
line. These include different plot markers, line styles, line
colors etc.. Lines can be plot into 4 different panes, each pane
has it's own value axis.
At the left side of the window there is a toolbox to control
zooming and plot marks (this toolbox can be turned off for a
larger graph).
Object graph zooming
--------------------
To zoom in on a graph, just place 2 lines in the graph by
clicking with the mouse. You can then click the "zoom in" icon
in the toolbox (magnifying glass with +) or you press the '+' on
the keyboard. You than then can zoom in again on the new view,
but you can also zoom out again to the previous view, by using
the "zoom out" icon in the toolbox (magnifying glass with -) or
press the '-' on the keyboard. The zoom area is maintained until
you select a new one.
Note: The view defined in the "time axis dialog" is not changed
when you zoom in on a graph. If you modify these settings while
in a zoomed view, the zoom are will be reset.
Object graph support lines
--------------------------
You can draw up to 10 lines in any of the 4 graph panes by
clicking on the fourth icon from the top in the toolbar. The
mouse will change to a + when moved over the plot area of the
graph. By click and drag, you can draw any line in that
particular pane. This can be helpful for analyzing charts using
Technical Analysis. You can delete lines by clicking on the
fifth icon from the top in the toolbar. On each click the last
drawn line will be deleted.
The support lines settings are stored in your personal desktop
file (.DT) and will be lost when you delete the particular graph
window from the desktop.
Graph/Lines... dialog box
-------------------------
The "Lines" dialog box is used to define the lines that are
drawn in the object graph window. You can also define in which
of the 4 panes a line is drawn.
A line definition can take up to 40 characters and may contain
the following items:
- Functions.
- Constants.
Functions currently supported are:
PRICE(<objectname>)
-------------------
This function draws a price line using the object defined in the
<objectname> field.
examples:
PRICE(CUROBJ())
PRICE(FOKKER)
PRICE(DOWJONES)
CONST(<value>)
--------------
This function draws a constant horizontal line of the value
specified in the <value> field.
examples:
CONST(101.50)
CONST(-25.125)
CONST(50000)
MOV(<objectname>,<numberofdays>)
--------------------------------
This function draws a (simple) moving average line, using the
prices of the object defined in the <objectname> field for a
period of <numberofdays>.
examples:
MOV(CUROBJ(),MONTH())
MOV(FOKKER,MONTH())
MOV(DOWJONES,20)
MO(<objectname>,<numberofdays>)
-------------------------------
This function draws a momentum line using the prices of the
object defined in the <objectname> field <numberofdays> back
from the current date.
examples:
MO(CUROBJ(),YEAR())
MO(FOKKER,YEAR())
MO(DOWJONES,20)
RS(<objectname1>,<objectname2>)
-------------------------------
This function draws a relative strength line using the prices of
the object defined in the <objectname1> field and the values of
the index type object in the <objectname2> field. The value at
the beginning of the time axis is always 100.
examples:
RS(CUROBJ(),EOE-IND)
RS(FOKKER,EOE-IND)
RS(IBM,DOWJONES)
EVAL(<objectname1>,<objectname2>,<price>)
-----------------------------------------
This function draws an expectation value line of an object of
the type "Call Option" or "Put Option". The option type object
is specified in the <objectname1> field, the underlying value
object is specified in the <objectname2> field. The <price>
field specifies the target price of the option.
NOTE: make sure that the type of the option (Put or Call) is
correctly specified in the Settings/Objects... "Type" field.
examples:
EVAL(CUROBJ(),DOWJONES,3500)
EVAL(PJAN300,EOE-IND,300)
Constants currently supported are:
CUROBJ()
--------
Can be used in <objectname> fields and returns a string
containing the current objectname (window owner).
DAY(), WEEK(), MONTH(), YEAR4(), YEAR2(), YEAR() and 30WEEKS()
--------------------------------------------------------------
These constants can be used in <numberofdays> fields and they
return integer values of 1, 5, 23, 65, 131, 262 and 150 resp.
NOTE: make sure that the syntax of the line definition you
define is correct, because the current version of Market View
does no syntax checking, the program may crash on syntax errors.
As you click away from an edit field or press ENTER, the line is
automatically enabled (checked). You can disable the line from
drawing, by unchecking the check box left to the line edit
field.
Each line can be drawn in one of the 4 panes. Just use the mouse
to change the pane number.
When you are ready defining the lines, just select the [Ok]
button to confirm or the [Cancel] button to discard the changes.

- The appearance of the tick marks.
- The date level for displaying the date under the axis.
- The period to display in the graph.
The tick marks can be changed by using the mouse.
The date level is how the date is displayed under the time axis,
there are 4 levels:
- Day (all days are printed).
- Week (all Mondays are printed).
- Month (the first price day of each month is printed).
- Year (the first price day of each year is printed).
You can also choose "Automatic" (most convenient in most cases),

Object editor window
--------------------
The object editor window is used to view and edit the price data
of the objects loaded in Market View. The object editor is able
to access one or more objects in one window. When you want just
one object in a window, you can open such a window by using the
Window/Open... dialog box. Just select "Editor" as the window
type and select one or more objects from the "Objects" list box
and press the [Ok] button. One or more windows will be opened,
containing the selected object(s). When you select sets instead
of objects in the Window/Open... dialog box, all the objects in
the selected set(s) can be accessed from the same object editor
window(s). Like with objects, it's possible to open several sets
at the same time.
The object editor window displays the price date spreadsheet-
alike. At the left of the window is the time base column listed.
At the right is a table containing the price data of the
selected object(s). Each field in the table corresponds with the
date in the time base column at the left. At the top of the
columns in the table is the name of the corresponding object
shown.
One field in the table is surrounded with a thick black border.
This is the edit pointer. This pointer allows editing of the
field. The position of the edit pointer is shown in the upper
left corner of the window. It shows the date and object where
the edit pointer is. The contents of the selected field are
displayed next to it. These contents can be changed by pressing
<ENTER> or by clicking with the mouse on it. A cursor appears
and you may enter a value. The entered input will be checked on
correctness.
An entered value will be checked on:
Syntax: Does the value make sense?
Overflow: Is the value too large for the chosen significant
decimals? (See Settings/Objects... dialog box).
Boundary crossing: Is the value above or below a preset value?
(See Settings/Objects... dialog box).
Abnormal difference: Is the value abnormally different from the
previous value? (See Settings/Objects...
dialog box).
Besides a normal value a field can be empty or contain special
values. The special values are: "N/A" (Not available) and "N/T"
(No trading). "N/A" is uses to indicate that this value ought to
be filled with a normal value, but that the value is not
available. "N/T" indicates that there was no trading at the
corresponding for the selected object. The special values can
also be entered by the drop-down list box at the right of the
contents of the field.
When a field contains simply a "-", then there's no price data
in memory on that date for the object. The cause could be that
the object wasn't completely loaded in memory (See File/Open...
dialog box) or there does not exist price data for that object
on that date.
<Del> erases a field.
Moving around in the object editor
----------------------------------
The edit pointer can be moved with the cursor keys or with the
mouse. When using a mouse, just click on the field where you
want to position the edit pointer. More sophisticated movements
are possible with the following keys:
<Page Up> and <Page Down> move the edit pointer with big steps
in vertical direction. The step size corresponds with the number
of visible vertical fields.
<CTRL+RIGHT> and <CTRL+LEFT> move the edit pointer with big
steps in horizontal direction. The step size corresponds with
the number of visible horizontal fields.
<Home> moves the edit pointer to the upper left place in the
price data table.
<End> doesn't move the edit pointer, but switches the object
editor in a special movement mode. Note that "End" appears in
the status bar. The "End" mode can be turned off by pressing
<End> again. The special movements are listed below.
<End> <Up>, <End> <Down>, <End> <Right>, <End> <Left> move the
edit pointer in the desired direction from a filled field to an
empty field. Or from an empty field to a filled field.
<End> <Page Up> and <End> <Page Down> move the edit pointer
respectively to the upper most and lower most position in the
column.
<End> <Home> moves the edit pointer to the lower left corner in
the table.
Scroll bars in the object editor
--------------------------------
When the price data doesn't fit in the window (in most cases),
scroll bars allow you to quickly view the data. Note that the
edit pointer won't move with the new view. (Look at the edit
pointer position at the upper left in the window) Only the view
to the data has changed. When you hit a key to move, the view
will return to the location of the edit pointer. When you want
to position the edit pointer in the new view, click in the
table.
Editor/Show date labels
-----------------------
This function is used to allow access to the date labels of the
objects in the object editor window. Date labels are used to add
a small text to an object for a certain date. This can be useful
to remember the reason of a big drop in the price of the object.
When the date labels are shown, a column appears between the
time base and the price data table. The contents of the date
label column correspond with the selected object and the time
base. The edit pointer can be placed in the date label column by
clicking on it with the mouse or by pressing <Tab>.
When visible, the upper tool in the tool bar can be used to show
or hide the date label column.
Shortcut: <CTRL+D>
Editor/Goto today
--------------------------
This function is used to set the edit pointer on today's date
(or on last Friday when today is a Saturday of Sunday).
Editor/Extend with 5 days
-------------------------
This dialog box is used to extend the size of the selected
object with 5 days. This action can only be performed when the
end of the object is in memory. Otherwise, an error will be
given.
When visible, the lower tool in the tool bar can be used.
Shortcut: <CTRL+E>
Editor/Split price... dialog box
--------------------------------
This dialog box is used to split the prices for the selected
object. The period on which the split action has effect is
initially the whole price data until the position of the edit
pointer. The period can be changed in the dialog box.
Real Time Price Processing
--------------------------
Market View supports a mechanism to automatically update your
price files, called Real Time Price Processing (RTPP short).
There are many sources for price data, such as data banks,
viditel and Teletext.
Market View support's Teletext RTPP to begin with, future
versions may include driver's for other price sources.
De RTPP handler can process objects in 2 ways:
- On disk.
- In memory.
If an object is not found in memory, the update will take place
directly on the disk file (.MVO). If the file has not enough
room to fit the update, it will be made longer by 1 day. If the
object is in memory and there is not enough room for the update,
the update is skipped and a !04 error is written into the
RTPP.LOG file. So it is preferable to update your files on disk
and load them later to view them. If you choose to update your
prices in memory make sure to save all changed objects when you
are prompted to when leaving Market View.
RTPP based on Teletext
----------------------
RTPP supports RTPP based on the price information published on
Teletext. Teletext is an information source that is send with
the TV signal in most European countries. To use Teletext on
your computer you need a tuned TV signal and a Teletext card in
your computer.
There are 3 ways to get a tuned TV signal:
- By using an external manually controlled TV tuner (Philips AV
7300 or compatible).
- By using a Teletext card with an embedded digital tuner
(Keyword).
- By using the CVBS signal on the SCART connector of your TV or
VCR.
Market View supports any Teletext card that is fully compatible
with the Keyword Teletext card based on the I2C bus technology
at I/O ports: 288Hex or 300Hex. The version of this card with
embedded tuner is also supported (not tested yet).
For more information about the Keyword Teletext cards, you can
contact:

The Netherlands
Phone: +34-15-624940
Fax : +34-15-624998
-------------------------
The Keyword driver (KEYWORD.DRV) also supports a proprietary way
of automatically tuning your Teletext card. You can configure
Market View to send a channel code onto one of your parallel
printer ports. You can use 8 different channels this way by
connecting a simple additional (home made) electronic circuit in
your AV 7300 tuner that connects the right push button to the
tuning circuitry. Just connect the ERROR pin of your parallel
port to 5V and connect 8 relays to the 8 datelines on the
parallel port.
The Teletext Viewer Window
--------------------------
The Teletext Viewer window can be opened by using the "Window
Open" dialog. You get a window that looks like a TV displaying
Teletext. All the features are supported in this viewer except
double height text.
Standard the viewer opens with the main index page, page 100. To
select a new page simply directly type the 3 digit page number
you want and hit <ENTER>. The viewer than seeks the new page and
displays it when it is found by the Teletext hardware.
By default a new page selection seeks for "any" sub page (marked
by the '0' in the sub page line editor). To seek and lock on a
specific sub page you select the "subpage" line editor with the
mouse and type in the subpage number or use the fine-tune
buttons near that editor.
There is also a handy feature in the Teletext Viewer that allows
you to walk through the index pages. Just select an index page
and click on a page number in that page. Any number between 100
and 899 will be recognized anywhere in the text. When you
release the mouse button on such a number, the Teletext Viewer
will seek for that new page.
When your computer has enough free EMS or XMS (about 96Kb), then
the last 100 (sub)pages that are displayed in the Teletext
Viewer window will be buffered. A new page seek will almost
immediately display the new page, this is then the buffered page
(caution: information can be outdated), then the hardware has
found the page, the buffered page is replaced by the new one.
NOTE: For this feature the usage of EMS or XMS must be enabled
in the "Options/Environment..." dialog box.
When you have a digital embedded tuner or a so called "pseudo
tuner", you can switch channels by using the drop down list box
in the Teletext Viewer window to select a channel. When you do
not have automatic tuning capabilities, the drop down button is
not displayed. When you manually change a channel, the contents
of the "Channel" field changes according the recognition strings
given in the "Options/Teletext" dialog.
You can print a page by using the <F11> key or the "Print"
command from the "File" menu.
