Dear Sysops;
I need to verify that non-metro boards are still up somehow. Six months
ago I announced I would delete boards I hadn't heard from in 90 days.
I kept the listings in my directory hoping a good number would call me
and verify themselves. I was amazed at how few sysops bothered to verify
their boards existance. So, having established how important the non-metro
listings were to the very sysops they were designed to help, I have deleted
all non-metro boards I haven't heard from in 90 days from my directory.
The next step is deleting the non-metro functionality entirely. After all,
it costs me about $20 a month in initial verification calls for something
a lack of response has proven is not important.
I suggest the use of VL*.ZIP or VENDOR*.ZIP to produce a vendor's support
numbers list...much better than mine was so mine has been sharply reduced to
only the ones I use.
If you have V32bis configured on the public line I list, let me
know on Interconnect, Swap Shop or Mystery. The last two have bbs
conferences they want you to use to contact me so please don't use
their main boards. On Interconnect, you can use the main board.
Address the message to "Mike Focke", not "Sysop".
Do NOT call me at home, it angers my wife.
I don't mind a note to:
Mike Focke
3599 Twilight Ct
Oakton, Va 22124-2103
That would be a cheaap easy way for a non-metro sysop to tell me his board's
listing was still good!
A sysop may use this information for any electronic purpose and distribution.
It is copywrite and not Public Domain. Contact me and I will be happy to
release it for most any ligit purpose. Expect the restriction that,
if you publish something commercial using this information, you must send
me a free copy of it (if a book) or a years free subscription (if a
magazine/paper).
Leave me a note on Interconect or Swap Shop or Mystery with your 72
character advertisement/board description. That is your way of
attracting the type of users you want and avoiding the ones who
wouldn't be interested in your board.
I receive many comments that the use of the words "metro" and "non-
metro" are relative to Oakton/Tysons and not reflective of the needs of
the whole area. Quite right! Remember that this list began as "my"
list and was not initially intended to be all things to all people in
all locations.
Jeff and I have discussed this item endlessly it seems and we can't
seem to get any better ideas than what we have now.
But now there is help for the user.
See FoxCut??.ZIP which on FOXCUT01.ZIP will produce a printout/file
with the numbers of the bbs that you can connect to from your exchange.
It is distributed separately from the DCBBmmyy.ZIP series.
My appologies for not completing a log-on or breaking carrier when I do
the verifications. When there were 100 boards, verification was easy. Now
it takes over a hundred hours!. So I am now using an automated method
that means I am not at the console as I have been in the past. This
still takes me days but is done at night mostly. The last hundred
hard to verify ones I still do by hand. And I verify the first time
with me at the console poking around the board.
Please show leadership and register your BBB S/W. Someday I will stop
listing boards that haven't within a reasonable time.
Thanks for running your board. We all benefit from your time and $
<grin>.
most of all, enjoy!
mike
