  5.                         It lumbers slowly up the Avenue,
  6.                         gushing deisel, gassy black clouds,
  7.                         up one gear, pause, up another, up
  8.                         then swagger; sway into the gutter,
  9.                         stop.
  10.                         Exhale.
  11.                         The doors swing open.
  12.
  13.                         Belly-loadful of hats and boxes
  14.                         step down, sneakers stomp, pumps flat,
  15.                         onto steps, then pavement;
  16.                         another anxious group counts change
  17.                         and deposits,
  18.                         clink clink! they go up the steps again.
  19.                         It sags once more, and
  20.                         belches.
  21.                         The doors swing closed.
  22.
  23.                         Up one gear, pause, up another, up
  24.                         then swagger; sway into the street,
  25.                         a profile of faces and newspapers,
  26.                         no bodies, just heads floating
  27.                         inside half-open windows,
  28.                         a flick of newspaper visible,
  29.                         a face turned the other way;
  30.                         the heat rushes in,
  31.                         the black clouds gush out
  32.                         again.
  33.
  34.                         Inside, "DO NOT CROSS LINE" appears wrong
  35.                         and the fare machine gurgles on,
  36.                         and on
  37.                         in front of a sickly green cave of seats.
  38.                         Up those heads float, stagger
  39.                         and sway into the aisle, while their host
  40.                         gushes menacingly through traffic
  41.                         on the Avenue, up a gear,
  42.                         up another, a noisy continuously moving
  43.                         digestive process
  44.                         of gasses,
  45.                         coins and bodies,
  46.                         pavement and gears.
