  93.   Well, I think I've got it down.  The digest numbers stored in
  94. /info-mac/per/im are correct now.  The ones that have been mailed out aren't.

  160. This is an update to the CDEF pack I posted yesterday.  I accidently posted a
  161. buggy version.  This is the correct package to be released.

  163. This package contains two CDEFs that may be used by programmers in their
  164. programs.  One CDEF allows the programmer to define the appearance of
  165. pushbuttons (or normal buttons) by color icons (ICN# or ics#), and let the
  166. system worry about plotting the correct color depth.  The other is a point and
  167. click method for entering time and date info into the program.

  201. This is Style 1.2.1, a simple application that lets you create
  202. small (up to about 32,000 characters) styled text documents.

  204. You can set font, font size, style attributes and color of
  205. individual characters with easily accessible menus.
  206. You can open any number of documents at the same time, the only
  207. limit being available memory.  You can create small stand-alone
  208. documents ('AutoViewers') that may be viewed and printed without
  209. the application itself.  Last, but not least, Style fully supports
  210. the Claris XTND architecture: you can import and export

  303. This is just a thought, but couldn't you drag the printer driver to the root
  304. level of your System Folder, reboot, use the Namer to name it and then put it
  305. back into the Extensions folder?  That may be enough of a kludge to work.
  306.  
  307. Another thing you could try is dragging it to the System Folder root and
  308. aliasing it back into the Extensions folder.
  309.  
  310. I'm not sure if this would work, but it *SOUNDS* logical.  If the Namer
  311. expects
  312. the driver to be at the root level of the System Folder, then put it there!

  353. "legal" time (1 minute) my Quadra 800 freeze ( not the quadra 700).

  357. , i'm not able to use 2way because the input port was utilize by another
  358. application.

  445.     I have darkside 4.0 and it plays at least some afterdark modules.
  446.     For example, /info-mac/gui/ad/clouds-10.hqx; 17K of im 201. Here is an
  447. afterdark module that works on darkside of the mac.
  448.     Note: At first, on default settings I got a crash and then I just
  449. tweaked settings once and didn't have any trouble resetting the settings
  450. thereafter. Now, when I lean my head back in my computer chair, I see
  451. beautiful clouds going by.
  452.     I have a sneaking suspicion that, with all my inits, my crashes
  453. shouldn't inform anyone else of anything to worry about.
  454.     So, you see, people do program DarkSide modules.

  474. I have recently purchased a used Mac II. Prior to this
  475. I have used an Apple IIc.  I plan to switch over completely
  476. to Mac applications, but in the mean time there are a
  477. couple of my Apple IIc programs I still need to run.

  479. Can anyone give me advice on plugging in an Apple CPU
  480. card into my Mac?  How well does this work?  Any major
  481. problems?

  484. my Mac?  My Apple IIc has a 5-1/4 drive, by Mac
  485. has 3-1/2 800k drive.  Is there any way of networking

  520. Having just migrated from At Ease v1.0 -> v2.0, I think I can answer this
  521. question.
  522.  
  523. The biggest changes are:
  524.  
  525. -At Ease can be configured for up to 10 users.  Each user will have their
  526. own set of applications, documents and system privledges.
  527. -Users can be granted the ability to rename and delete files, create new
  528. folders, and copy files to and from floppies.
  529. -There are 3 options for opening and saving files.  Users can be allowed to
  530. open and save anywhere on disk, only to a user's folder created by At Ease
  531. on the startup disk, or to floppy disks exclusively.
  532. -A user can be configured to go directly to the Finder at startup,
  533. bypassing At Ease all together.  A nice feature for Mac *experts*.
  534. -There's an option for At Ease to speak a button's name when the cursor is
  535. passed over it.  In addition, sounds can be attached to any item on a
  536. user's At Ease panel.  This is nice for young children unable to read yet.
  537.  
  538. -A program's monitor depth can be set on the fly by holding down the option
  539. key while clicking on its button.  Great for games.
  540.  
  541. IMO, users of At Ease 1.0 will find the upgrade to v2.0 worthwile.  Apple
  542. has added some nice features to make the Mac even easier for novice users.

  561. I suspect this is a FAQ, but I don't know where the that list is kept and was
  562. hoping someone could quickly reply to me at spencer@shiva.com with the
  563. answer.

  565. I am using system 7.1.
  566.  
  567. I have quite a few fonts in the fonts folder. Ihave PostScript files. Ihave
  568. Suitcase files with several Screen BitMap. Ialso have lose screen bitmaps
  569. without suitcases.
  570.  
  571. When print a document I know I have the right font files for (both screen and
  572. PostScript) I either get font substitution or any error saying PostScript
  573. file not found creating BitMap. Then I get PostScript error and nothing
  574. prints.
  575.  
  576. Anyway, I remember actually fixing this problem once for someone, but it was
  577. months ago, and I can't remember how. It had something to do with too many
  578. suitcases or not enough suitcases or something like that. (Basically how the
  579. fonts where stored in the fonts folder made a difference).

  581. If anyone out there know what I am talking about and knows the solution, I'd
  582. really appreciate a reply.

  599. A Centris 660AV loaded with assorted entensions and control panels has a
  600. problem with "Get Info".  The keyboard command is changed to Command-Option-W
  601. which can't be invoked (except by mouse).  When I try to open the control
  602. panel
  603. folder from the Apple menu the computer shuts down Now Menus, the Get Info
  604. returns to Command-I but still can't be used by command and by mouse, and I
  605. still can't open the control panel folder from the Apple menu.
  606.  
  607. There is a conflict or incompatability somewhere because when the extensions
  608. are turned off with shift on startup, there is no problem (and no extensions)
  609.  
  610. Any help would be appreciated.

  630. Although NEC 5FG (which has been replaced by 5FGp) and Sony 1730 always get
  631. good magazine reviews, they're not among my favorites. E-Machines T16II or
  632. Sigma Design ErgoView 17 (both made by Mac Innovision) have sharper images
  633. (the most important factor, IMO). However, Mac Innnovision's quality
  634. control is not as good as NEC's or Sony's (so the probability that you may
  635. get a defective monitor is higher). There're two new monitors you should
  636. also consider: Sony 17se and Nanao T560iW. Both are a bit more expensive
  637. (especially the Nanao), but they're arguably the best monitors money can
  638. buy. The Nanao T560iW is similar to the legendary T560 with the added
  639. energy conserving feature. The Sony is brand new and has all the features
  640. (flatter tube, continuous scan, high scan rate, color control,
  641. energy-saving mode, etc.) you could ever want.

  658. CopyDoubler 2.0.1 just did something a bit strange when I tried copying a file
  659. from within a doubly-nested list view, so I thought I would ask
  660. if anyone else has seen something like this. I've been using it without
  661. problems on a 7.0.1 (tuned) system for quite a while. Recently I installed
  662. System 7.1 on my cartridge drive and have been running 7.1 off the cartridge
  663. for 5 or 6 days now. Today I had a folder open in a list view on my internal
  664. drive (not the cartridge); within the folder was another folder whose list
  665. view was also open, and within that folder was an application file.
  666. I tried to copy the application file to the cartridge drive, whereupon
  667. CopyDoubler popped up a window saying that a file named '%s' already
  668. existed at the target location, and did I want to replace it. I
  669. cancelled the copy and tried again; same thing. I tried to copy the file
  670. to another folder on the same drive, by option-dragging it; same response.
  671. Finally I closed the list view and did a direct open on the folder
  672. containing the application; it opened (in a list view) and I tried once
  673. more to drag the application file to the cartridge drive. This time it
  674. worked.

  676. I've never been able to get the CopyDoubler icon to appear in my Control
  677. Panels folder as anything but the default dogeared document icon; any
  678. suggestions there? (This is not exactly pressing, but I thought I would

  704. I too had problems with corrupted Word files crashing the damned
  705. application. I found that the solution was to give up using Microsloth
  706. products (the only one I will use is Excel).
  707.  
  708. Given that the author is in Chemical Engineering, he will find that there
  709. are better document-processing systems around, particularly for documents
  710. that contain mathematics (Word's equation editor is a joke, and
  711. alternatives, like Expressionist, whilst representing an improvement, are
  712. still a long way away from high-quality mathematics typesetting). Some of
  713. the superior solutions are even shareware: you can get an incredibly
  714. high-quality and easy to use system, complete with spelling checker, for 55
  715. US dollars (and it handles equation, figure, table, and citation
  716. auto-numbering, together with automatic positioning of tables and figures
  717. on the page). I'll let you all guess what the 55 dollar system is (hint: it
  718. has been used to produce top-quality textbooks, typeset AMS and IEEE
  719. journals, etc.).

  765. I raised the issue of these problems about 6 months ago in terms of
  766. my Trackball freezing up on startup.  At the time I recieved alot of
  767. useful comment from the net and summarized the findings.  It is
  768. essientially a problem of Apple not following their own specs
  769. according to the Trackball manufacturers.  Kensington at the time  put
  770. out a software upgrade, but others who do things in hardware have
  771. still not solved the problem.  It is interesting that Apple is still
  772. grappling with the problem, and that it is not just occuring to third
  773. party equipment.  For a system that has built its reputation on
  774. sticking to a specific set of specs (relative to the IBM world) it is
  775. disappointing.  In fact it is the only complaint I have against my Duo
  776. 230, "I want to use my ITAC trackball!!!!!!"
  777.  
  778. Enough flaming (well sputtering at least) it is time that Apple got
  779. off their duffs and fixed the problem with the ADB so that periferals
  780. developed to meet their specs will work!!!!

  799. Not so long ago when I started up my PB I got an "unimplemented
  800. trap" bomb referring to the Apple Fax software installed on the system.
  801. (I have an Express Modem on my machine).
  802. I rebooted and the INIT icon for Fax Extension came up with a big
  803. X thru it.
  804. So I reinstalled the system, reinstalled the fax software, rebuilt
  805. the desktop file, checked for viruses and for bad blocks (Disk Tools
  806. and MacTools).
  807. Still get the X-ed out init icon, and, of course, the fax doesn't
  808. work.
  809. Does anybody have any idea of what's going on?

  820. I have good news for those people like myself who have been searching
  821. far and wide for software to translate between English and other languages.
  822. Thanks to an earlier tip in the archives, I have found out that
  823. Globalink is transferring its software Power Translator Professional to
  824. the Macintosh platform.  There will be versions which will translate
  825. Spanish, French, German, or Russian to or from English.  The software
  826. will be available at the end of this month, it is claimed.
  827.  
  828. I should point out that the software is far
  829. more than a two-way dictionary.  The
  830. software contains a full-sentence translation engine which Globalink
  831. claims can reach accuracy levels of over 90\% at speeds which can
  832. exceed 20,000 words per hour.  Dictionaries are modifiable to handle
  833. specialty words.  There are also special subject dictionaries for a
  834. few fields which act as filters which can speed up translations.
  835. As far as I know, there are already versions for DOS, OS/2, and Unix.
  836.  
  837. The price for the Macintosh version is $1195.  This may sound
  838. expensive, until one considers the power of the software and
  839. its uniqueness on the Macintosh platform.  I should point out
  840. also that this price includes a license for up to 5 users.

  1223. protection dongle I must add that no solution was found !  I'm from
  1224. Israel, I use hebrew system, I also use Hebrew Nisus (which is great) but
  1225. the dongle problem is a real problem from some aspects:
  1226.     * I know some unhappy Duo owners + some unhappy PowerBook owners
  1227. cause walking around with this thing hanging from your computer is not a
  1228. nice thing, especially when it can come off whenever it feels like and
  1229. than you can say goodbye to your document if you're luckey and to your
  1230. ADB chip if you're not...
  1231.     * It really makes your life hard when you need to move it from
  1232. one machine to another - shut off and on again. It's also not tight like
  1233. the regular ADB keyboard or mouse so many times it dissconnects in the
  1234. middle of your work (refer to the previous section for details on what
  1235. happens then :-().
  1236.     * Conflicts when having to chain a few diffrent dongles... (but
  1237. the problems described here are those of the PETlock).

  1368. A couple of days back John Armstrong wrote regarding a problem with a
  1369. Quadra 800 that seemed to be using 20Mb in the system.
  1370.  
  1371. The solution is to enable 32 bit addressing. Without it, the Mac OS can
  1372. only address 8MB of real memory. As he stated, when he trimmed the
  1373. system down to minimum, it showed 18.5 MB in use, which means that the
  1374. system was consuming 2.5MB (about right for 7.1 on one of the large
  1375. machines), plus 16 MB of memory that it couldn't address otherwise.

  1377. Try 32bit addressing... you'll like it (and so will your Mac)... ;)

  1390. I have owned a Duo230 (8meg ram, sys7.1, enabler201) for about a month
  1391. and GNRNRNNRNRRRRNNRGRNR have had masses of problems with it (two new
  1392. motherboards and a new harddisk have had to be installed). Anyway, the
  1393. next problem is not hardware, but how to best create a RAM disk.
  1394. I want to be able to have a small system and MSWord (altogether approx
  1395. 4.1meg) operating from a RAM disk (as startup disk) when on battery
  1396. power.I've tried AppDisk, RamDisk+ and RamDiskHelper, but none of them
  1397. seem to do the job. RamDisk+ claims to be able to run the system on the
  1398. harddisk without accessing the harddisk, but I haven't been able to get
  1399. this to work. RamDiskHelper creates a RAMdisk fine, but the system I put
  1400. on the RAMdisk isn't recognised when I restart with the RAMdisk set as
  1401. the startup disk. AppDisk can't be used to create a startup RAMdisk.
  1402.  
  1403. What can I do? Am I doing something wrong? (I can do everything I want if
  1404. I use the system's memory control panel to create a RAMdisk, but this is
  1405. a pain, as you have to boot three times, before the RAMdisk can be the
  1406. startup disk).

  1454. the Laserwriter 8.x.x distribution which is available from

  1471. AppleTalk/Ether networks, in order to grab 'emergency' files when folks'

  1473. Occasionally, it's reported to me via a window (on the poorly machine) that
  1474. a file that I need to copy across is in use on the ci (by somebody, or I
  1475. forgot to quit it) - which means I have to sprint to the other end of the
  1476. building and turn it off, then try again.
  1477. Question: what is a good way of solving this problem (other than getting
  1478. more organised)? ie. how can I send a QUIT AppleEvent to particular apps on
  1479. the remote ci, either with or without a warning at that end?
  1480. If I bought or got somebody benevolent employer to buy AppleScript could
  1481. this be used to write something of that sort - bearing in mind I'm not
  1482. really a programmer, although I'd give it a shot if need be.
  1483. SOmething that sits in the ci, looking at the net and waiting for these
  1484. commands.

  1616. 1.  Statistica/Mac has a survival analysis module with a Macintosh interface
  1617.     to calculate various models and plot survival rates.
  1618. 2.  Systat 5.x can be extended by an add-on module with a DOS-like command
  1619.     line interface; it should have highly reliable algorithms. A version with
  1620.     Macintosh interface should not be expected before 1994.
  1621. 3.  JMP, also known for it's solid algorithms, will introduce survival
  1622.     analysis in version 3 which is expected to ship in December.
  1623. 4.  There is a survival module for SPSS, a large statistics program of
  1624.     mainframe origin.
  1625. 5.  another major player in statistics software for the Mac is unlikely to
  1626.     stay behind the competition by offering an "incomplete" program ...

  1684. For LaserWriters, we had to put a copy of the LaserWriter driver into the top
  1685. level of the System 7 System Folder in addition to the copy in the Extensions
  1686. folder in order to use the Namer.  I imagine this might work for AppleTalk

  1723. two pages. One vendor told me that his monitor could show two pages
  1724. of a Microsoft Word document in Print Preview (all monitors can; you
  1725. just cannot EDIT the document).

  1829. I've seen press releases and glossy ads for WP 3.0, but no impartial
  1830. descriptions. I did not see mentioned whether the program will have an
  1831. outlining capability (one of Word's best bells-and-whistles). To be a
  1832. serious contender in this category, it would have to allow
  1833. collapse-and-expand. (The outlining feature in DOS WP5.1 allows you to
  1834. select and move families but not collapse or expand. This is apparently
  1835. remedied in WP6.0. I'm wondering if the remedy has carried over to the Mac
  1836. version.) It would also be nice if, like Word, it allowed you to generate
  1837. a table of contents directly from the outline. Anyone know?
