This package contains two CDEFs that may be used by programmers in their programs. One CDEF allows the programmer to define the appearance of pushbuttons (or normal buttons) by color icons (ICN# or ics#), and let the system worry about plotting the correct color depth. The other is a point and click method for entering time and date info into the program. This package should be in the development directory, and may be released on CD-ROM packages. Michael F. You can set font, font size, style attributes and color of individual characters with easily accessible menus. You can open any number of documents at the same time, the only limit being available memory. You can create small stand-alone documents ('AutoViewers') that may be viewed and printed without the application itself. Last, but not least, Style fully supports the Claris XTND architecture: you can import and export documents in various word processor formats. The Style 1.2.1 package includes translators for MacWrite 5.0 and MacWrite II. Style takes advantage of most System 7 features and user interface improvements (including Balloon Help, stationery pads, movable modal dialogs, temporary memory, apple events, etc.) but can work with any system starting from 6.0.4. System 7.0 or newer (7.1 recommended) is required to handle non-Roman script systems properly. Main changes from version 1.2: * Better Script Manager support. * Support for inline input in double-byte script systems (yes, that means Style is KanjiTalk7 compatible and TSM-aware!) * Ability to set print margins accurately. * Various bug fixes. This version supersedes all previous releases. Suggested placement in the info-mac hierarchy: info-mac/text. This archive was compressed and binhexed with StuffIt Lite 3.0.6. The biggest changes are: -At Ease can be configured for up to 10 users. Each user will have their own set of applications, documents and system privledges. -Users can be granted the ability to rename and delete files, create new folders, and copy files to and from floppies. -There are 3 options for opening and saving files. Users can be allowed to open and save anywhere on disk, only to a user's folder created by At Ease on the startup disk, or to floppy disks exclusively. -A user can be configured to go directly to the Finder at startup, bypassing At Ease all together. A nice feature for Mac *experts*. -There's an option for At Ease to speak a button's name when the cursor is passed over it. In addition, sounds can be attached to any item on a user's At Ease panel. This is nice for young children unable to read yet. -A program's monitor depth can be set on the fly by holding down the option key while clicking on its button. Great for games. IMO, users of At Ease 1.0 will find the upgrade to v2.0 worthwile. Apple has added some nice features to make the Mac even easier for novice users. K. The Nanao T560iW is similar to the legendary T560 with the added energy conserving feature. I've been using it without problems on a 7.0.1 (tuned) system for quite a while. Recently I installed System 7.1 on my cartridge drive and have been running 7.1 off the cartridge for 5 or 6 days now. Today I had a folder open in a list view on my internal drive (not the cartridge); within the folder was another folder whose list view was also open, and within that folder was an application file. I tried to copy the application file to the cartridge drive, whereupon CopyDoubler popped up a window saying that a file named '%s' already existed at the target location, and did I want to replace it. I cancelled the copy and tried again; same thing. I tried to copy the file to another folder on the same drive, by option-dragging it; same response. Finally I closed the list view and did a direct open on the folder containing the application; it opened (in a list view) and I tried once more to drag the application file to the cartridge drive. This time it worked. I've never been able to get the CopyDoubler icon to appear in my Control Panels folder as anything but the default dogeared document icon; any suggestions there? Thanks to an earlier tip in the archives, I have found out that Globalink is transferring its software Power Translator Professional to the Macintosh platform. There will be versions which will translate Spanish, French, German, or Russian to or from English. The software will be available at the end of this month, it is claimed. I should point out that the software is far more than a two-way dictionary. The software contains a full-sentence translation engine which Globalink claims can reach accuracy levels of over 90\% at speeds which can exceed 20,000 words per hour. Dictionaries are modifiable to handle specialty words. There are also special subject dictionaries for a few fields which act as filters which can speed up translations. As far as I know, there are already versions for DOS, OS/2, and Unix. The price for the Macintosh version is $1195. This may sound expensive, until one considers the power of the software and its uniqueness on the Macintosh platform. I should point out also that this price includes a license for up to 5 users. It produces pure postscript files, which print flawlessly (assuming all is well with the world) on any postscript device. Illustrator will happily take TIFF, GIF, PICT, etc. files if they have been converted to EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format. This enables such files to be -- drum roll -- printed on any postscript device. If you don't need a package that works in pure PostScript, then you're absolutely right. (2) Ken Linger made a few mistakes in his contribution, such as. >Apple was first. The interface now used on almost any successful platform >is either theirs or a bastardization of it. Actually, it's common knowledge that Xerox PARC did it first. Along with ethernet and postscript and the rooms analogy that General Magic are so proud of, and just about all the good stuff. One day they'll figure out how to sell their own ideas rather than letting others make the money. ;-) (3) What's the big deal about platforms anyway? I use (play with) whatever computers are available to me, even if it means a return to the dreaded command line. :-( Ken Linger also posted a very big flame about anyone 'foolish' enough to buy a PC. Well I love Macs, they've got far fewer of the 'heritage' problems that make Windows so clumsy at times, but I've twice chosen a PC instead. For perfectly practical reasons, the old bangs/buck ratio included. With applications, network protocols and now even operating systems being ported every which way the platform is becoming less and less significant. So let's not play 'My dads bigger than yours,' it's too childish even for me. (Q) A simple question: does somebody know if there is thermal analysis software available on the Macintosh? With thermal analysis software I mean a program which calculates temperatures and heat flows for 'nodes',from a mathematical model. For insiders, something like the SINDA (used in USA) or ESATAN (used in Europe) software. Because of the specialistic nature of this question, please reply by e-mail. I will summarize for the net. From talking with a monitor vendor I've discovered that ALL the vendors mean is that if you can figure out how to get them up there you could see two pages. One vendor told me that his monitor could show two pages of a Microsoft Word document in Print Preview (all monitors can; you just cannot EDIT the document). Does anyone know of ANY monitor/board/driver combination that would permit two pages of a Microsoft document to be displayed in editable form. robert moore rmoore@brownvm.brown.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1993 10:41:35 -0600 From: kprehoda@students.wisc.edu (Kenneth Prehoda) Subject: UUENCODE (A) >After I DL 4 uuencoded files from a newsgroup that are 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and >decode them with Stuffit Deluxe, how do I join the parts? > >PETER CHANE Maybe an FAQ? Concatenate the text files first. The easiest way to do this is to use a utility such as uulite 1.5. This will automatically merge the files and uudecode them. Recently, as I waited for my LC II to load my 29 extensions from my 80 meg hard drive, I began to ponder getting a new Mac. I can tolerate the three-minute wait while the thing boots, and SpaceSaver has provided me with lots of reusable space, but I'm fairly certain I will get tired of these limits within a couple of years. With PowerPC computers coming out next year, I have decided the best choice would be to get one of these instead of another Macintosh-brand computer. How- ever, I neither need nor can afford a lot of power. My current system cost just under $2000, and my next one will have to cost about the same. So my question is...Are there any plans for a low-end PowerPC? Just curious; this purchase is at least one year away. -------------- Jay Bienvenu sjb8502@usl.edu -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1993 10:38:55 -0400 (EDT) From: "Tad Davis" Subject: WordPerfect 3.0, Outlining (Q) I've seen press releases and glossy ads for WP 3.0, but no impartial descriptions. I did not see mentioned whether the program will have an outlining capability (one of Word's best bells-and-whistles). To be a serious contender in this category, it would have to allow collapse-and-expand. (The outlining feature in DOS WP5.1 allows you to select and move families but not collapse or expand. This is apparently remedied in WP6.0. I'm wondering if the remedy has carried over to the Mac version.) It would also be nice if, like Word, it allowed you to generate a table of contents directly from the outline. Anyone know?
