IBM PC DOS VERSION 6.1
ABSTRACT PC DOS Version 6.1 is the significantly enhanced
primary operating system for entry-level IBM and compatible OEM personal
computer systems. PC DOS Version 6.1 features a library of integrated DOS
utilities that result from alliances with award-winning software vendors
and IBM Research. The utilities include:
o Disk compression *
o Anti-virus
o Full-screen backup
o New full-screen editor
o Program scheduler.
PC DOS Version 6.1 provides important additional features such
as new hardware support (PEN, PCMCIA), a memory optimizer to access more
memory in order to run applications better, a program scheduler with a
full-screen calendar that allows day or night program scheduling, and a
powerful new editor that provides new capabilities, such as draw, box,
sort and add, plus the ability to edit multiple files. In addition, the
DOS kernel is smaller and overall performance is improved. PC DOS
Version 6.1 extends memory expansion to 8086/88 and 80286 systems by
providing device drivers that can utilize a wide variety of video and
expanded memory adapters to load applications high.
Two versions of the product are offered: a base product for new
systems, and a full PC DOS Version 6.1 upgrade package capable of upgrading
over any existing DOS (Version 2.1, or higher, installed on a hard disk) at
a significantly reduced cost.
DOS 5.02 continues to be available to customers who do not require
PC DOS 6.1 utilities and features.
* Disk compression will not be included in the product initially.
It is planned to be available, at no additional charge, by
September 30, 1993. To obtain disk compression after
availability, submit the special coupon included in the product
shipment group. Allow four to six weeks for delivery.

INVESTMENT PROTECTION
SUPPORTS OLD SYSTEMS AND OPTIONS: PC DOS Version 6.1 will provide
a compatible DOS environment on the 8088/8086/80286/80386/80486
family of products (except PCjr (TM), AT (R)/370, and XT (TM)/370)
marketed by IBM and OEMs at PC DOS Version 6.1 general
availability. Assuming equivalent systems configurations and
adequate memory, applications that execute on one processor will
execute similarly on all other processors (except for performance
and known incompatibilities between system units).
MAINTAINS INTERFACES (COMPATIBILITY): PC DOS Version 6.1 continues
to provide an open system architecture that can be expanded via
system extensions, device drivers and future enhancements. It also
continues to allow applications to use DOS extensions. Application
interfaces have been maintained and tested.
PROVIDES EASY UPGRADE: PC DOS Version 6.1 provides full PC DOS
function with installation specific programs that allow and aid
previous IBM and compatible DOS users to upgrade to PC DOS
Version 6.1 at a significantly lower price. A prior version of IBM
or compatible DOS (Version 2.1, or higher) must exist on the
installation system hard disk.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
PC DOS Version 6.1 should be considered cross-industry and in OEM
channels as the primary operating system for the entry level IBM
and IBM-compatible personal computer systems. PC DOS Version 6.1
should also be considered as the operating system for non-entry
IBM and IBM-compatible systems, when advanced solutions, very
large memory, storage protection and multi-tasking are not
required.
The PC DOS kernel is based off the MS (1)-DOS 6 kernel and is
compatible with Windows (1) 3.X, Windows Applications, DOS
extenders and DOS applications.
IBM is committed to DOS and DOS customers. IBM is making a
real investment in upgrading DOS users with state-of-the-art
utilities and hardware support (PEN, PCMCIA).
PC DOS Version 6.1 features competitive, award-winning DOS
utilities, which surpass those offered in the MS-DOS 6 product.
TECHINFO TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: PC DOS Version 6.1 will operate on all
Intel-based personal computers (8088, 286, 386, and higher).
The minimum processor system memory required for PC DOS
Version 6.1 installation is 512KB. A new system (one without a
previous version of DOS installed) should also have a 720KB, 1.44MB
or 2.88MB 3.5-inch or a 360KB or 1.2MB 5.25-inch "A:" diskette
drive. The PC DOS Version 6.1 Upgrade requires a system with a
prior version of DOS (Version 2.1, or higher) installed on the
hard disk. Installation on upgrade systems can occur either from
any diskette drive or from the network to the hard disk.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS
COMPATIBILITY: PC DOS Version 6.1 maintains upward compatibility
with prior versions of IBM DOS. Support of functions supported on
previous levels will be continued, unless a specific function is no
longer supported by IBM. Functions no longer supported in PC DOS
Version 6.1 include QBASIC and BASICA. However, QBASIC and BASICA
from prior versions of DOS should continue to run compatibly with
PC DOS Version 6.1.
LIMITATIONS: Applications supported on previous levels of DOS
should run compatibly with PC DOS Version 6.1. However, with
each release of DOS, adding new features introduces some
incompatibilities. Below is a list of changes that may cause
compatibility problems.
o A20 Gate Handling.
DOS 5.0 toggled the A20 line on and off as needed and
resulted in a performance penalty but aided compatibility with
older applications that made assumptions about the state of
A20. PC DOS Version 6.1, when loaded high (DOS=HIGH), keeps
the A20 line enabled for performance reasons. If users find
that this is a problem they should load DOS low (DOS=LOW).
o No BACKUP.COM
The BACKUP command has been replaced with the new
full-screen backup program CPBACKUP. CPBACKUP is superior in
every way to BACKUP but incompatible, both in name, switches
and backup format. To enable users to restore backups made
with previous releases of DOS the RESTORE command will be
shipped as part of PC DOS Version 6.1. Also if the user has
BACKUP.COM, it will not be deleted when PC DOS Version 6.1 is
installed.
o New SMARTDRV
The SMARTDRV disk cache program is redesigned totally
causing the invocation and command line options to change.
Install will automatically make the necessary changes to
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
o MIRROR replaced with DATAMON
Some of the function of the DOS 5.0 MIRROR command is
integrated into DATAMON. Users that used to run MIRROR will
need to run DATAMON instead.
o EDIT replaced with E
The DOS 5.0 full-screen editor EDIT is replaced in PC
DOS Version 6.1 with E. E is superior to EDIT in
functionality but has a different user interface. Users that
select EDITOR from the DOSSHELL and expect EDIT will get E
instead. Install will not delete the users DOS 5.0 EDIT and
QBASIC so current EDIT users can still run it. E was
purposely not named EDIT to make this possible.
o No BASICA or QBASIC
PC DOS Version 6.1 will not ship any BASIC interpreter.
Customers that already have DOS installed can still run their
BASIC or QBASIC product because install does not delete it.
o Disk Compression
Compressed disks represent a departure from current DOS
versions. Users who compress their hard disk will not be able
to boot an older version of DOS and view files on their hard
disk. Compressed diskettes are also possible with PC DOS
Version 6.1 but pose no compatibility problem since they
contain a TSR program which will allow the diskette to be
read by systems running older versions of DOS.
