-
- Hi John,
- Have called the Kintracers BBS several times since you gave me the
- number and am now a validated user. I'm not sure what requesting users to
- send a postal application, rather than applying online gets a sysop.
-
- Anyway, I got the Tafel Matching System nodelist and called a Personal
- Ancestral File User Group BBS in Maryland, where you can register online
- and download anything that I saw that I wanted. TMS is an interesting
- application of PC's and networking where you create a Tiny Tafel which
- describes your family history database (computer or otherwise), provide
- name/address/phone/home BBS, etc, submit the TT to the home BBS, request a
- match, then log off. A limited online match is possible, but likely not
- worth trying as I doubt any other people are researching the names that I
- am. I'll try that mode another time, once I have access to TMS. Anyway,
- once you log off, an offline, batch program takes over and runs, to match
- the names/soundex codes/start year/end year/family names/place names of
- your TT to all other TT's on the home BBS. A report is created that you
- can obtain by download, the next day. However, in the meantime, the fun
- begins: using the National Genealogy Conference/TMS network, your home BBS
- sends your TT to the next node, where the same match is done again.
- However, in this case, the report doesn't return to you immediately, it is
- attached to your TT and sent on to the next node. And so on and so on and
- so on....until I guess, the author of TMS' own BBS in California gets it,
- where a match is done and the two are fired back to your home BBS, I'm not
- sure whether non-stop or node by node(I would imagine the latter). All
- this at no cost to yourself, or so the TT documentation says. In any case
- I d/l someone else *.RPT file just to see what it looks like and he ended
- up with 25KB worth of info showing researchers on other nodes looking for
- information on people/dates/places he was looking for. And some of the
- names were rather unique, as well, so perhaps the names on my list would
- also yield a good hit rate.
- Anyway, creating a TT sounds like a cumbesome process to do manually
- but having seen mine, it sounds harder than it actually ends up being.
- However, a file on Kintracers, called TTGEN10C.LBR, labelled "not for IBM"
- turns out to be Turbo Pascal compiled/no source to do the job almost
- automatically. The CPAFUG BBS has a file called GED2TT??.ZIP which is
- likely for the PC, but takes your PAF database and really automatically
- creates a TT file. They also have many other PAF oriented files and I
- find that PAF have move from version 2.0 to 2.1 and 2.2. Actually, I'll
- put together a disk for you for the next C=128 meeting.
- Hope you had a good weekend at the cottage. Re'a{ds, Ray

- I wasn't able to go to the York Public Library for what should have
- been the inaugural C=128 meeting. However, since only George Skinner was
- able to make it, there wasn't a meeting. I WILL be there for the October

-
- Ray,
-
- Well, at the WOC someone introduced a hand scanner for the 64. There was
- an intro lecture on it Saturday afternoon, but I couldn't attend as the
- others I came with had to leave. So, hand scanning capability has
- apparently been added to our 8-bit machine repertoire. :)
-
- I appreciate the Pocket Writer 3 cheatsheet offer. However, I've been
- using it, and its predecessors (sp?) <gee.... I'm not gonna spell check
- every post!> for so long most everything in the program is transparant to
- me. Even, the Control x and y and >. However, others could probably
- benefit from it, and in fact would welcome having it.
-
- Double lined graphic boxes? What a marvelous idea. I never would have
- thought that possible. I'd certainly welcome learning the coding for
- this one!
-
- The main printer is an Epson, so I am not sure if it would agree with
- Panasonic's. Here's what the boxes part of its printer file looks like:
-
- Boxes on :27,116,1,27,85,1,27,115,1
- Boxes off:27,115,0,27,85,0,27,116,0
- Codes:196
- Codes:197
- Codes:194
- Codes:193
- Codes:180
- Codes:195
- Codes:218
- Codes:191
- Codes:192
- Codes:217
- Codes:179
-
- It has been a while since I originally set this up, and I had forgotten,
- the specifics. However, I found that in addition to turning the
- characters on/off, they printed better if the printer was set for
- half-speed, and unidirection printing. The extra coding turns these
- additional features on/off, and results in very attractive boxing, etc.
- This may just be a quirk with my printer, an older 9 pin, so you might
- give them a tryout, just to see if they really are needed with the
- Panasonic.
-
- If the character codes agree with yours for single line boxing, then your
- selecion of doubled line should work for the Epson too, and I'd like to
- have those to use with a new printer file.
-
- The PW3 macros I made up do everything from file copying chores, to text
- formatting, to re-formatting A Æbuffer from Dow/Jones, so that updated
- stock pricing with current dating can be added to a Pocket Filer 2 data
- base. They all call up named files, or reformat existing buffers, so
- unless everything you have would agree with my set up, they would stop
- running at the first error, or file not found, etc.
-
- Macros are really very easy to set up, and pretty well described in the
- accompanying docs. The "complicated" part was determining what Filer 2
- wanted in order to update automatically. The only "trick" I added was
- constructing "single" macros of 1,000 keystrokes, exceding the 255
- keystroke limit.
-
- This was done by having one macro end, by calling a second, etc. In
- fact, it made construction of macros easier, since I could do them in
- small modules, and if I made a mistake, only that module had to be
- redone.
-
- The "one" macro that reformats the D/J's buffer, does a whole series of
- finds, block moves of quotes and dates, and then goes on to convert
- fractions from 1/2 thru 31/32'nds into decimals for Filer2.
- [continued]

- [ParΦII]
-
- The procedure is really simplen Just watch`Ñach`⌐ndividual`¡acro`╖ith`ínM
- X#, w╘ere # is the letter of the next macro you want it to jump to.
- Later, load the saved macro file into an edit buffer like BTP128, where
- you can easilly locate the Xa, for example, and change the X to a decimal
- value of 172, using BTP's C=, # option. Then resave the new macro. This
- way, macro A jumps and runs B, which jumps and runs C, etc.
-
- If more than 1,000 keystrokes are needed, as was the case here, just end
- the last macro with Y,M,L,2:filename,<CR>. Filename is the name of the
- next macro to be loaded (from RAM if "2:"), and change the Y to the
- decimal value 160. This way, the macro concludes by loading a new macro,
- and a simple Control L, A will set off another 1,000 unattended
- keypresses.
-
- The one "rule" that must be followed in re-constructing macros with any
- edit buffer is that the keystroke count of the macro file cannot be
- changed, nor the individual keystrokes of any individual macro within the
- macro file. However, you are free to change around any individual
- character.
-
- So, just put "dummy" characters in any macro to be edited. Here's a
- listing of some often used keystrokes:
-
- Keystroke Decimal Value Keystroke Decimal Value
- ========= ============= ========= =============
-
- left arrow 157 control l 172
- right arrow 253 control x 184
- up arrow 145 control r 178
- down arrow 241 control b 162
- shift/clr home 147 <carriage return> 237
- shift/space 116 C= (comkey) 160
- clr home 243 alt 242
- tab 233 shift/alt 254
- space 32 F3 134
-
- If for any reason you need one that isn't listed, just enter that
- keystroke into a "harmless dummy" macro, and examine the saved file to
- get its value.
-
- One more "trick". Construct the macro modules in such a way, so that as
- things change, any one macro can be easilly changed (or skipped), and the
- whole will still run, as intended. This way, as my interests in stocks
- change, I can easilly change just the one macro affected, and its up and
- running.
-
- Since any macro can call and run any other, I can't figure out why this
- wasn't included as a standard feature.
-
- The one thing that has stumped me is getting the second and subsequent
- macro files to auto run, without needing intervention to start off the
- first macro. However, one keyboard press to auto run another 1,000 isn't
- a bad compromise.
-
- BTW, that "macro" that reformats the D/J buffer, does about 1,700
- keystrokes perfectly and quickly each time. (And, it's fun to watch, at
- least the first few times.) Certainly, it does more than I'd be willing
- to do manually, just to update the file, or the maybe several hundred
- keystrokes if I entered the stuff manually direct into Filer2.
-
- Howie
-
- P.S. This and the prior post were loaded, and subsequently re-structured
- and saved to disk via macro! :)

- Hi Howie,
- Thanks for the feedback on the C=64 scanner and your other post on the
- WOC. Gets the old blood warmed up anticipating the upcoming WOC in
- Toronto in Dec.
- Re: your PocketWriter 3 macros and other tools
- I appreciate your modesty and respect for the difficulty of using
- something geared to a specific configuration, but I would like to see
- something on PW3 just to keep up the interest, although I no longer see it
- in the few remaining stores that sell 8-bit stuff in Toronto. However, if
- you would just include a short file to describe what system configuration
- you have, and turn the whole thing loose on the BBS community, some of us
- will be able to figure out what is specific to your system and adapt it to
- ours. You seem to have done the most fantastic things and I'm sure others
- would benefit greatly.
- I'll have a look at that message about your printer codes to see how
- they match up with my "double line graphic" driver. All I did was change
- the codes from the ones that came to the graphic set (sending the code to
- enable Graphics set 1, and as you noted, setting print-one-way instead of
- bidirectional- the print head positioning is what messes this up) and I
- said "if I can do single line, double line is just another set of codes
- away". Unfortunately, since PW3 only supports 11 characters at a time,
- you need to make another driver but you can install print drivers after
- loading the program, so that is no problem. Anyway, I will upload shortly,
- as am trying to create a text version of the graphics chart to help people
- who might want to use it but wouldn't understand what I'm doing without
- the help of a source document to check what I was up to.
- Nice typing to you. Regards, Ray

- to repeat the same info: keystroke - description, description - keystroke.
- Each are sorted. Much handier.
- Micro spacing features are great and multiple columns are great and
- boxes (to mention another feature) are great, but each is complicated
- enough by itself, that even on WordPerfect 5.0, you couldn't do boxes and
- columns together. Maybe version 10.0!!! So it's no wonder the right hand
- column is "all over the place". To bad, it would have been a real coup if
- it had worked. By the way, PW3 CANNOT do columns and boxes either.
- Darn!!! Regards, Ray
- By the way, my cheat sheet LOOKS like PW3 does do boxes and columns but
- I cheated: I made the document in columns by tabbing, then manually
- inserting the box characters. Maybe WP5.0 would have done it that way ,

- Subject: Pocket Writer 3 -- Bug?
-
- Hello!
-
- Perhaps the best word processor on the market today for the Commodore 128
- is Pocket Writer 3. I really enjoy using this versatile and very powerful
- word processor. Undoubtedly, other users will agree. However, I think I
- have stumbled across a bug. I am currently using V3.00 (as stated on the
- disk label). Could anyone tell me if they have/know of a version that exceeds
- this one? I would like to get the latest issue... Anyway, here is the bug;
- please tell me if you have this problem as well:
-
- I use my C-128 with a 1571 (boot disk), a 1581 (data disk), a 1750 REU
- (Data disk and storage of necessary program files), a 1351 mouse. When I
- load PW3, I have the REU enabled, and the 1581 disk drive off. Normally,
- after the program loads and copies the OVERLAY files to the REU, I turn off
- the 1571 and turn on the 1581. This way, my system uses the 1581 as the main
- disk, and the REU as the secondary one.
-
- Now, copy the printer file that you normally use (either by
- pre-configured methods or manual loading) to the REU (from the boot disk).
- From here, press C= D or C= 2 (REU) to obtain the directory mode screen. Move
- up to the printer file name under the REU drive (or your secondary drive) and
- press C= I plus the RUN/STOP key to get the file in the command line for
- installation of the printer file. You will see something like:
-
- Install Printer File: 2:FILENAME.pf
-
- The 2 designates the drive that the file shall be loaded from. Now
- if I press return, the expected result is that PW3 will load the
- aforementioned printer file into memory from the REU. However, the program
- goes to the physical drive instead of the REU! Obviously this is not
- normal, hence there is a problem. On a related note, if I press C= I right
- after loading the program, and press help, I get a screen full of
- garbage as my help screen. When I press Shift Help, I exit and when I press
- help again, it comes up with the actual help file that it should be
- showing. If I press the C=key or RETURN, I get a locked up computer! This is
- also while using the REU as drive
- 2. Has anyone experienced this? If you can, please experiment with this
- and get back to me. Also, PLEASE let me know what version you have!

- ALSO SEE: 504.
-
- Hi Ralph,
- I'll certainly try out what you describe as a bug, but my first
- impression is that this is not a bug. PW3 will load from any disk you
- wish but it expects to find the files to load to the REU on disk 8 (a
- rather peculiar default configuration, but that's the way it is) so I BOOT
- "PW*",U9 or RUN"pw*",U9 and have the other files on the 1581 I have set to
- device 8. Also, there is a configuration file that you can alter to
- specify what printer driver you wish to load, without having to manually
- do C=I and use the directory listing as you describe. I also have
- reservations about turning off devices after loading a program (some load
- the drive RAM with custom code for fast transfers/copy protection) and
- since PW3 supports multiple drives (8=0, 9=1, REU=2, 10=3, etc., yeah, I
- thought it was a funny scheme, myself, but then I didn't collaborate on
- writing the program), so you can load from where-ever, with above
- mentioned limitation, and write to where-ever.
- My configuration is just somewhat more complicated than yours:
- C=128, 1750 REU, 1351 mouse
- 1-1541 as disk 8, turned on at appropriate times, mostly kids playing
- games,
- 1-1571 as disk 9, on when the power bar turns on,
- 2-1581 as disk 8 and 10, used to boot CP/M, GEOS and CS-DOS and on
- usually when I use the computer (exception: when I run 1541
- specific disk routines)
- I haven't had any difficulties using the directories or using the
- RUN/STOP technique originate by PaperClip and borrowed by PW, and on the
- whole am pleased with the program. Also, I have V3.0 but apparently there
- is a later version you get if you send in the warranty card and the
- $13.50. There may still be a reference from Howie Herman in the message
- base here. I'll get back to you when I have had a chance to check this

- Hi Warren,
- Re: single & double line boxes in the same doc.
- There are 11 character definitions required to account for all the
- characters to do a box. You'll notice you can't even do French characters

- impliment the box feature so it's not possible to go that route to have

- miss it too. No, I haven't gotten anything from that group in California,
- and the guy I sent it to seems to have dissapeared from the 128
- conference. Hmmm....
- Well, I have been trying to learn C but haven't had very much time to play
- with it. I find that it is fairly close to Turing (aka: more forgiving
- version of Pascal!) and maybe that (as it seemed at the time) useless
- language we were learning in school will come in handy. I have put an
- order on The C Primer and hope that they can locate a copy and that it
- hasn't gone out of print. I can never get it from the library when I have
- time for it and when the reserve finally comes through, I get a big
- assignment or something...
- Other than that it has been a fairly quiet summer.
- Are you going to go to the CompuFest Fall show? I am thinking of going
- down as I'm running low on 3 1/2" disks. I have brougt in my 1902a for

- Hi Chris,
- Re: C=128 meeting, we had a modest turnout, six or so. We finally got

- C=128 and arrived a bit late. However, used it to demo CS-DOS to the

- than that, we ran somewhat overtime (about 10 pm) but nobody came around
- to kick us out until we were ready to leave.
- Some of the things we covered:
- o CS-DOS v 1.5
- o latest on CMD hard drives/RAMlink
- o availability of SuperCalc2 v1.00 for CP/M via FOG library
- o availability of scanners for C=64 at Valley Forge WOC
- o some are ordering Swiftlink UART cartridge
- o availability of DESTermv2.00 (here and elsewhere) support Swiftlink
- o converting GeoPublish to "print to disk" and print PostScript on PC
- o my experiences with PAF/TMS/TT and other genealogy pursuits
- o many topics to numerous to mention.
- As you can see, we had a pretty good meeting. Will look for you at Nov.
- meeting.
- C can be a daunting language to learn on your own. I took the evening

-
- Ray,
-
- Yup! That post was for you. :)
-
- I was promised RamLink by mid March (when I spoke with CMD last month),
- so it should be getting here VERY soon.
-
- From what I know of RL, (at least the RL's Ram) there is no CP/M support,
- and none planned. [That can change if we all SHOUT loud enough.] The
- REU, however, is still available for CP/M, with the plus that it will
- retain its contents, since it is also powered by the same source as the
- RL.
-
- A few clarifications: the RL runs off its own power supply, which you
- are supposed to connect BEFORE your power strip, so that when you turn
- things off, power will continue for the RL. The battery option (which I
- got) protects that source. It is ONLY for limited emergencies, such as
- short outages (24 to 36 hours), and normally not used. RamDrive on the
- other hand has a self-contained battery power source, similar to QBB.
- But, RD is limited to its 2 MgBytes. (Isn't technology great! In '86 I
- couldn't have said `limited to... 2 Mgs'.)
-
- It looks like an extra power line conditioner/surge protector might be a
- good idea. No prob, since I see them going for $5-10, today, compared to
- almost $100 five years ago.
-
- The prob, as I see it with the present CP/M set-up is that if you NEED
- the REU for things like CS/DOS applications, Basic8, etc., the CP/M stuff
- gets wiped out. Being able to partition part of the RL for CP/M use is
- really needed. I'm waiting to get mine to see what is what. Then, I'm
- hoping I can interest some of the CP/M gurus on GEnie to re-write a BIOS.
- [If Niklos G. was still running his 128, he could probably do it while
- multi-tasking stuff on his other machines.]

- when I was actively sysoping, on Cleveland's FreeNet. ID there is AA349.
- FreeNet also connects thru Internet, so that address is
- `aa349@cleveland.freenet.edu.' These days I am mostly there to read
- Usenet. Unlike an earlier Usenet connection I had, I can't post, since
- this hasn't been implemented.
-
- There are a few other places, but CIS (CompuServe), and GEnie are where I
- am most.

- Msg Base: #5 - CP/M and C128
- Msg No: 541. 3-16-91 22:15.16 (NO KILL)
- From: John Milligan
- To: Howard Herman
- Subject: RAMLINK
- ALSO SEE: 540.
-
- Howie,
-
- Good to hear from you again.
-
- I have had a RAMLink (gamma version) for a few weeks now, so I have
- a couple of comments.
-
- The version I have had, did NOT support CP/M mode, but the release
- version SHOULD, at least, have the ability to partition a section of the
- RAMLink memory as a 1581 (or 1571) disk - which CAN be separate from the
- memory in your 1750 REU memory - so you could have two separate areas
- totalling 510+790 = about 1300k - which can both be protected by battery
- backup etc.
-
- The amount of memory on-board in RL comes into play here - if you
- have, say, only 1 meg, and yoy allocate that as CP/M - then you do not
- have much else to play with elsewhere (though, of course, the REU is still
- available), but if you have more memory, you could have a 1581 RAM section
- permanently available for CP/M ...AND... a 1581 for GEOS ...AND... more
-
- Gerry Moss has already bought SIMM's to bring his up to 4mb, though,
- when I last talked to him, he had not installed it. Our 'gamma' units
- had a few bugs (apparently, now fixed)
-
- CMD have already tried to get Miklos G. to re-write the CP/M BIOS
- to support the HD (and subsequently the RL) but apparently Miklos is
- either unable, unavailable or disinclined to come up with anything.
-
- At any rate, from what I hear, you should have RAMLink RSN (real
- soon now) ........ have fun
-
- John
