-
- There is now available (I have uploaded a copy to Dir 11) a two
- drive file copier that runs from within Dialogue - very handy!
-
- The file is called COPY.EXT and it works very well. It is a very
- small program - only a few seconds to download.

- Hi Gerry,
-
- I think you mentioned about someone having photo-copied versions of
- the new Geos Reference Manual. Do you have any more info?
-
- I have just ordered from Berkely (from the flyer they mailed out)
- GeoCalc, GeoChart and IF it is Version 2 - Geoprogrammer. I read the fine
- print on the flyer with a magnifying glass and it does say something about
- 128 mode and 80 cols for GeoProgrammer. Let's Hope.
-
- You won't be at next Tuesday meeting, right? Are you going to
- ComputerFest. I hope to be there Friday afternoon, (Ray is coming with me,
- I think) - there is a presentation at 4 or 4:30 on ALEX, which may or
- may not be interesting.
- (Also, on Friday, your business card and the coupon from Toronto
- Computes gets you in free - anything to save 4 bucks!)

- ALSO SEE: 424, 426.
-
- Hi Michael,
-
- I have other documentation on CS-DOS, from version 1.4, but the
- doc files provided with version 1.5 are fairly complete.
-
- The biggest compatibility problem is that Commodore 8 bit machines
- were never intended for 'shell' programs like CSDOS. The MS-DOS
- environment, and indeed CP/M, work quite nicely in this regard, using,
- respectively TSR's (Terminate and Stay Resident) ans RSX's (Resident
- System eXtensions). However, the native CBM mode does not have any set
- 'rules' for setting up this kind of program. Consequently any and all
- native mode programs compete for the same memory space. Sure, you can
- redifine the limits of BASIC, but that does not apply to any commercial
- programs.
-
- I realise that this is not much help to you, but you have to be
- realistic - not much, if any, commercial stuff will run under CS-DOS.

- Just joined the Jiffydos set with my C128. It set me back just over $100
- cause I went the CANADIAN way ( read EXPENSIVE), but so far it looks like
- the best centavos I've ever spent on my machine.
- It blows away all the irksome COMMy bugs like the one-sector head shuffle
- that happens when you write to the flip side of the 71 disks.
- I could go on, but I'm sure y'all don't need to hear anymore about it.
- The RAMLINK device is now due out for JUNE. But as its been put back a
- couple of times already, I'd wait til then before getting excited. Sounds
- like a pretty good product. At a round number $200 CDN (or more), it
- sounds like a better bet than the old 1750 REUs. And it's expandable with
- RAMCARDS upto FOUR megabytes! Also, unfortunately ONLY for 64 users, if
- you buy it, you DON'T need the Jiffydos package to get all the advantages
- of Jiffydos itself. Can't imagine how they swung that one but that's what
- THEY say.
- Anyway, interested in any comments from ANY other Jiffydos users or

- Hi Eugene,

- Welcome to the JiffyDOS set. You're wondering why you waited so long,
- right?
-
- Are you inferring that the RAMlink is only for the 64? Not so,
- according to everything I have heard.
-
- Also, while it is true that the RAMlink will include JiffyDOS, as
- far as I am aware, it won't give you ALL the advantages. eg - you had the
- old 1571 ROM, it sounds like, until you replaced it with JD. That would
- not have been corrected with a RAMlink version alone. There are, I believe
- a couple of other instances, but I cannot think of them offhand.

- Yes, I am wondering why the "#$% I didn't pick it up when I'd seen it at

- You're right. I didn't mean to imply that RAMLINK was N/G for the C128. It
- seemed you were going to HAVE to go through extra expense relative to the
- C64 to get to the same point.
- However, if as you point out, there are other handicaps without the

- From: Ray Whidden
- To: Paf Users
- Subject: CONVERT CP/M TO MS/PC-DOS
-
- Hi all Personal Ancestral File (PAF)u users:
-
- Just a note to say I successfully converted my 300KB family database
- from CP/M to MS/PC-DOS format and the PC version of the porogram works most
- ly like the CP/M version. One difference while entering families/indivi-
- duals: you get an option to enter notes when you save the screenful of
- information. Also, F1/F2 do the same as ^Ks/^Kq. One huge advantage of
- the PC program is the PAFUTIL program, which has a relationship calculator,
- pedigree search that is not position sensitive, SOUNDEX search on names in
- the name file, additional printed forms/reports and genealogy songs with
- words (this is not up to the quality of sound C=64/128 users are familiar
- with).
-
- The relationship calculator will ask for two entries, then compute the
- relationship between them, except for married or step-relations. For
- example, 2nd cousin, 1 generation removed or 1st cousin, 2 generations
- removed. There is a reference to Genealogical Computing, for the
- technically oriented.
-
- The pedigree search allows you to enter a name(s) for individual or
- place: ie. Whidden Marvin and it will find Whidden Raymond Marvin, Whidden
- Marvin or Whidden John James Marvin. Likewise, Manning in the first
- location of birthaddresses will find Manning in birth place level 1, level
- 2, level 3 or level 4. If you wish to search for Manning in christening,
- death or burial place, you will have to add Manning to those field or do
- four different searches. If Manning is entered for all four areas (born,
- christening, death and burial), I expect you would not find a match unless
- Manning existed in all four areas.
-
- As well, the pedigree search allows selection of options by nmenonic
- letter, I=information, F=father, M=mother, S=spouse, C=child, O=other
- marriage, P=pedigree search or X=exit. Also, if you select I you see the
- usual information, parents, up to three spouses and the first six lines
- of notes for that individual. You may browse using the right, left, up
- and down arrow keys, HOME, END, ENTER, F=father, M=mother and
- S=individual's first spouse.
-
- The SOUNDEX feature allows you to find all the different spellings of
- any particular name: ie. Whidden, Whydden, Whiddon, Whitten, etc. You may
- also display ALL names.
-
- The print forms option permits forms to go to printer or disk file.
- You may also print the GEDCOM file in two formats: formatted or
- unformatted. Other options include a) cascading pedigree as many
- generations as you wish, b) list of family group records, c) ancestors
- chart and d) user defined forms (twelve forms included).
-
- Genealogy songs are of interest to those who have never heard PC
- music before. Others will note the comparison between machines they are
- familiar with and the PC and forge on with productive work.
-
- The Personal Ancestral File program can be obtained by calling the
- local Mormon - Latter Day Saints (LDS) church and requesting an order
- form. o I will leave a separate message in Utah for those wishing to order
- the program directly. The price was last known to be $35.00 US$ for the
- MS/PC-DOS version of the program (revision 2.0, the same as the CP/M
- version). This includes a comprehensive PC format manual of
- approxiamately 200 pages. The CP/M version is no longer supported by LDS.
- Novices wishing to use the CP/M version are advised to buy the PC version
- in order to obtain the manual.

- unused 1/3 of the C=128; and yes, I realize that it is old stuff but it is
- sufficiently close to MS-DOS (it was a predecessor) to warrant further
- use.
-
- I have tried to use Smallterm, aka CP/MTERM, which runs in 128 native mode
- but ostensibly downloads to single-sided CP/M 128 disks. The terminal mode
- seems to work very well, but when I select F3 for downloading from CRS, it
- just maps out a 1K block, but doesn't download anything. It terminates
- with a "Downloading complete" message (a final irony) but hasn't
- downloaded anything beyond the first couple of characters.
-
- Can you offer a suggestion as to how I can get Smalletrm to work, or
- suggest something else, perhaps a CP/M terminal program? I know that there
- are a couple on two TPUG disks, but they require other TPUG disks to
- unarchive, and the next meeting of the 128 section isn't until September.
- If I could only crack the downloading problem on CRS, then I could go
- ahead and d/l a real prog.

- Al,
- There are three CP/M terminals that could be of interest to you -
- MEX, QTERM and IMP.
-
- I believe all are available on CRS, the trick is, with all CP/M
- terminals to get one that is configured for the C128 (which as you
- probably know has VERY non-standard ways of doing things)
-
- Do you have a way of getting programs from CBM disks into CP/M? I

- Hi Ray, Desterm still seems to be $25! But, I have the registered disks,
- not the bbs upload version. I think it said I wasn't to just upload my
- disks but to upload the bbs prepared package - could be easier to download,
- defaults set right, etc to reduce problems getting started.
-
- I guess I should call Matt's board and get the bbs version. Probably a
- good idea to touch base with him anyway and maybe arrange some sort of
- pipeline to him. Though if CRS comes on full blast including remote phone
- links, I guess that's one way. I'll see if I can get to him direct later
- tonight.

- Hi Doug,
- Now that you repeat it, I recall a message saying you didn't have the
- destributable version. Sorry about that. Hope you are able to get the
- shareware version. Appreciate the help.
- I'm having some difficulty with PostScript files created by
- Geopublaser/Geolaser patched with PS.Patch v2.0. See my message in conf
- 10, Commodore Users. If you see anything relevant, steer it my way.
- All the best on getting back to the books. Regards, Ray

- Since you asked Ray, I would be interested in what you have done with
- Pocket Writer 3. I don't quite know what you mean by a "cheat sheet" for
- the program, but it may be interesting. I wanted some time to make a
- double line printer file, but just have not got around to it. Have you
- tried to edit the "french.chrs" to get the double lines on the screen?
- This is also a project that is way down on my list. Anyways glad you are
- willing to share your efforts.

- Hi Warren,
- A "Cheat Sheet" is those plastic covered layouts that fit around your
- keyboard with information on them that show key combinations for things
- you'd like to do: an IBM equivalent is the card you put next to your
- function keys with WordPerfect so you know which function key does what.
- Mine is a page with the key combos on the left with a description, on the
- right, the same information shows the description followed by the required
- key combo, sorted in description order. This solves the two problems: I
- think I know what the keystroke is, does it do what I want and 2) I know
- what I want to do, what's the darn keystroke. It prints at 12 cpi and
- 8lpi so is very dense but otherwise, it would be two pages, and I can
- never find the page I want.
- Re: foreign character set versus line drawing, I think PW3 uses the same
- area as I don't think you can do both. Do you have a Panasonic KX-P1124?
- If not, perhaps I should include the chart from the printer manual so
- others can see what was being done and can thus adapt it to their own
- printer. Anything to help out. Regards, Ray
