On April 22, thousands of people gathered in a chilling rain as the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was dedicated in Washington.
The museum honors the memory of more than six million Jews and millions of others who were killed in Nazi Germany during World War II.
The museum, 15 years in the planning and construction, cost $168 million in private funds. The building is located on federally-donated land near the Washington Mall.
As the year came to an end, more than 600,000 people had visited the museum to see the exihibits, many of which graphically depict the suffering of Holocaust victims.
