TITLE: How to Have a Printer Connected to Two Ports
PRODUCT: Ami Pro 2.0
DATE: 11-Oct-1991
PROBLEM:
Multiple printers using the same printer name and printer driver which are
connected to different ports show as separate printers in the Control Panel
but Ami Pro shows only one printer name.
SOLUTION:
There are two ways to use both of the printers in Ami Pro. The first method
is to make the printer that does not display in Ami Pro the default printer in
the Windows Control Panel. This printer will then be available in Ami Pro.
This method, however, would need to be repeated each time a print job is sent
to the printer that is not the current default printer. A more permanent
solution which will allow seeing both printer names in Ami Pro involves
editing the Windows WIN.INI file.
Since the multiple port designations are listed on one line in the Windows
WIN.INI file, Ami Pro will list the printer name only once. It is possible
for Ami Pro to list printers using the same printer driver and attached to
more than one port if the WIN.INI file is changed to list the printers by
separate names on separate lines. Follow these steps to make the necessary
changes:
1. Run the SYSEDIT.EXE program in Windows (this is the Windows System
Configuration Editor program located in the Windows SYSTEM directory).
2. Make the WIN.INI file the active window.
3. Choose Search / Find.
4. Type [PrinterPorts] and choose NEXT.
5. The text under the heading [PrinterPorts] is information that is used to
display the installed printers in the Windows Control Panel. Here is an
example of how this section may look where a printer name is set up for
multiple ports (in this example the PostScript printer is set to LPT2 and
LPT3):
PostScript Printer=PSCRIPT,LPT2:,15,45,LPT3:,15,45
Canon LBP III=LBP83137,LPT1:,15,45
6. Touch the DOWN arrow key until the single line for the printer name which
is attached to multiple ports is reached. Edit this line so that there
are two separate lines with different printer names. In the above
example, the PostScript printer would be changed to:
PostScript Printer=PSCRIPT,LPT2:,15,45
PostScript=PSCRIPT,LPT3:,15,45
NOTE: In this example, the second printer name is being changed from
PostScript Printer to PostScript.
7. Choose Search / Find.
8. Type [devices] and choose NEXT.
9. The text under the heading [devices] is information that is used to
display the installed printers in Windows applications. Here is an
example of how this section may look where a printer is set up for
multiple ports (in this example the PostScript printer is set to LPT2 and
LPT3):
PostScript Printer=PSCRIPT,LPT2:,LPT3:
Canon LBP III=LBP83137,LPT1:
10. Touch the DOWN arrow key until the single line for the printer which is
attached to multiple ports is reached. Edit this line so that there are
two separate lines with different printer names. In the above example,
the PostScript printer would be changed to:
PostScript Printer=PSCRIPT,LPT2:
PostScript=PSCRIPT,LPT3:
NOTE: In this example, the second printer name is being changed from
PostScript Printer to PostScript.
11. Choose File / Save.
12. Press ALT + F4 to close the System Configuration Editor.
13. Exit Windows completely to the DOS prompt.
14. Load Windows and Ami Pro.
15. Display a file for which the printer needs to be changed.
16. In Ami Pro choose File / Printer Setup.
17. The list of available printers will include PostScript Printer and
Postscript. PostScript Printer is attached to the LPT2 port and
PostScript is attached to the LPT3 port. Either printer can now be
chosen for a document.
18. Choose OK to close the printer setup dialog box after the desired printer
is chosen.
