  1. TITLE:   How to Resolve ATM Fonts That Don't Match for a PostScript Printer
  2. PRODUCT: Ami Pro 2.0

  5. PROBLEM: 
  6.  
  7. Adobe Type Manager fonts have been installed.  Upon entering Ami Pro, the 
  8. message "ATM fonts and PostScript printer fonts don't match on Helvetica" 
  9. appears.
  10.  
  11. SOLUTION: 
  12.  
  13. The error "ATM fonts and PostScript printer fonts don't match on Helvetica" is 
  14. a message that is generated by the Adobe Type Manager (ATM) program.  
  15.  
  16. If a version of ATM containing Helvetica was installed prior to installing the 
  17. ATM program provided with Ami Pro release 2.0, modifications should be made to 
  18. the ATM.INI file.  
  19.  
  20. HOW TO MODIFY THE ATM.INI FILE
  21.  
  22.   1. At the Windows Program Manager choose File / Run.
  23.   2. Type ATM.INI and choose OK.  This runs the Windows editor Notepad and 
  24.      loads the file ATM.INI.
  25.   3. Choose Search / Find.
  26.   4. Type [Aliases] and choose OK.
  27.   5. Press the DOWN arrow to position the insertion point on the line that 
  28.      reads:
  29.      Helv=Arial MT
  30.   6. Replace Arial MT with Helvetica so that the line reads:
  31.      Helv=Helvetica
  32.   7. If the ATM Times font has been installed, press the DOWN arrow to 
  33.      position the insertion point on the line that reads:
  34.      Tms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS
  35.      If the ATM Times font has not been installed, skip to Step 9.
  36.   8. Replace TimesNewRomanPS with Times so that the line reads:
  37.      Tms Rmn=Times
  38.   9. Choose Search / Find.
  39.  10. Type [Synonyms] and choose OK.
  40.  11. Repeat Steps 5-8 to make the same chances in the [Synonyms] section.
  41.  12. Choose File / Save to save the changes.
  42.  13. Press ALT + F4 to close Notepad.
  43.  14. Exit Windows completely to the DOS prompt.
  44.  15. Load Windows and Ami Pro again.
  45.  
  46. If the message continues to appear, or if another font is listed, the fonts 
  47. that are listed in Adobe Type Manager's ATM.INI file do not match the fonts 
  48. listed in the WIN.INI file section for the selected PostScript printer.  
  49. Generally the reason the fonts don't match is because the PostScript printer 
  50. was not the default printer in Windows at the time the ATM program was 
  51. installed or the port connection for the PostScript printer has been changed 
  52. since the ATM program was installed.
  53.  
  54. The Adobe Type Manager program places the names of ATM fonts in the Windows 
  55. WIN.INI section for the PostScript printer that is the default Windows printer 
  56. at the time ATM is installed.  If the Windows default printer at the time ATM 
  57. is installed is not a PostScript printer, no ATM fonts will be listed in the 
  58. WIN.INI file for a PostScript printer.  If a PostScript printer is the Windows 
  59. default printer at the time ATM is installed, the ATM fonts will be listed 
  60. only for the default PostScript printer connection.  For example, if a 
  61. PostScript printer connected to the LPT1 port is the default printer when ATM 
  62. is installed, ATM's fonts will be listed in the PostScript section of the 
  63. WIN.INI file with the LTP1 connection.  If there are other PostScript sections 
  64. in the WIN.INI file with other port connections, these sections will not be 
  65. updated with the ATM font list.  
  66.  
  67. A PostScript printer section in the WIN.INI file can be updated with the ATM 
  68. font entries by following these steps:
  69.  
  70.   1. Connect the PostScript printer to the desired port through the Printers 
  71.      section of the Control Panel.
  72.      a. In Windows run the Control Panel (there is usually an icon for the 
  73.         Control Panel).
  74.      b. Choose the printers icon.
  75.      c. Choose PostScript printer in the Installed printers list box.
  76.      d. Choose Configure.
  77.      e. From the Printers Configure dialog box choose the desired port.
  78.      f. Choose OK.
  79.      g. Choose Active Status.
  80.   2. Choose Configure.
  81.   3. Choose Setup.
  82.   4. Change the orientation to the opposite of the current setting (for 
  83.      example, if the current orientation is portrait, change it to 
  84.      landscape).
  85.   5. Choose OK.
  86.   6. Choose Setup to change the orientation to the desired setting if the 
  87.      change made in Step 4 is not the desired setting.  NOTE:  The reason for 
  88.      changing the orientation is to force creation of a section for the 
  89.      PostScript printer attached to the new port in the Windows WIN.INI file 
  90.      if the section does not exist.  A section for the printer attached to the 
  91.      new port is necessary in order for ATM to add the font lines properly 
  92.      into the WIN.INI file.
  93.   7. Choose OK.
  94.   8. Choose OK.
  95.   9. With a mouse, double click on PostScript printer in the Installed 
  96.      Printers box to make it the default printer (without a mouse press ALT + 
  97.      D).
  98.  10. Choose OK.
  99.  11. Choose ALT + F4 to close the Control Panel.
  100.  12. Install the ATM fonts through the ATM Control Panel (there is usually a 
  101.      Windows icon for running ATM).  NOTE: If the ATM fonts are not manually 
  102.      downloaded to the PostScript printer, use the ATM disk that is supplied 
  103.      with Ami Pro to install the ATM fonts instead of using the ATM Control 
  104.      Panel.  Installing the fonts supplied for Ami Pro with the version 1.15 
  105.      ATM program disk (this is the version that is shipped with Ami Pro 2.0) 
  106.      will place in the WIN.INI file the necessary information for temporarily 
  107.      downloading to the printer the required fonts with each print job.  
  108.      Installing ATM fonts from the ATM Control Panel in Windows will not place 
  109.      the information in the PostScript section of the WIN.INI file for 
  110.      downloading fonts to the printer with each print job.  This provides for 
  111.      the opportunity to manually download the files to the PostScript 
  112.      printer.
  113.  13. If the ATM disk is used in Step 12 instead of the ATM Control Panel, the 
  114.      ATM.INI file will need to be modified again if the ATM fonts Helvetica 
  115.      and Times are still installed.  Repeat the steps in the section titled 
  116.      HOW TO MODIFY THE ATM.INI FILE.  If the ATM Control Panel was used in 
  117.      Step 12 or if the ATM fonts Helvetica and Times are no longer installed, 
  118.      skip this step.
  119.  14. Exit Windows completely to the DOS prompt.
  120.  15. Load Windows.
  121.  
  122. The PostScript printer section in WIN.INI should now match the fonts listed in 
  123. the ATM.INI file.
