-=≡=- REQUIREMENTS
DukeEdit requires an IBM compatible PC with a VGA monitor, a mouse,
and approximately 200K free memory. A 386DX, or better, is STRONGLY
recommended (DukeEdit is graphics intensive).
Some version of Duke Nukem is also required. You will be unable to
save your levels or play the enclosed additional levels without the
registered version.
DukeEdit will complain if it can't find any of these things, and
generally refuse to run.
(Since DukeEdit's requirements are different than those for Duke Nukem,
it may not run on all PC's that are able to run Duke Nukem.)
-=≡=- INSTALLATION
DukeEdit may be installed almost anywhere you like. However,
installation will be somewhat simpler if you decide to install it in
the same directory as a registered version of Duke Nukem.
- First, if you wish, create a new directory for DukeEdit.
examples: mkdir \games\dn2\dukeedit
mkdir \games\dukeedit
- Second, copy the DukeEdit .ZIP file into the desired directory and
unzip it.
examples: cd \games\dukeedit
copy a:dked20.zip
pkunzip dked20
- Third, if you have installed DukeEdit in a directory other than the
directory where the registered version of Duke Nukem is located you
must edit the DUKEEDIT.CFG file and specify the location of Duke
Nukem. Find the parameter labeled "DukePath=" and specify the
correct directory after the equal sign.
example: DukePath=C:\GAMES\DN2
DukePath=C:\DN3
DukePath=..\
- Optional: You may want to explore the comments and other parameters
within the configuration file to customize DukeEdit to suit your style.
- Forth, you must now run the program MAKEDAT.EXE which will read the
Duke Nukem graphics files, convert and sort them, and create the
DUKEEDIT.DAT file which is required for DukeEdit to run.
If MAKEDAT.EXE returns an error indicating that it cannot find the
Duke Nukem graphics files check that you have correctly specified
the location of Duke Nukem in DUKEEDIT.CFG.
- Fifth, type DUKEEDIT from the command line and away you go!
-=≡=- TROUBLESHOOTING
"Wait, isn't the troubleshooting section usually at the end of the
documentation file?" Yes, but I can already anticipate the most
frequent problem...
ALL of the programs included with DukeEdit MUST be able to find a
registered version of Duke Nukem in order to operate properly.
(A "registered version" means episode two or three.) This may be
accomplished in one of two ways:
1. Run the program from your Duke Nukem directory, the program
can then perform registration verification in the current
directory.
2. Edit the DUKEEDIT.CFG file and properly specify the location
of a registered version of Duke Nukem with the "DukePath="
parameter. The program will then look in this directory
for registration verification.
If you have not yet registered Duke Nukem, do it now! Otherwise, you
might as well erase this program and free up the hard disk space.

or *.DN3 w
