  29.      If you have decided to visit Romania you surely want to get some
  30. information about this country.

  32.      Millions of tourists from all over the world have already visited Romania
  33. in different seasons. Of course, most of them came in summer, but others
  34. enjoyed the wonderful beauties of autumns, the winters in the Carpathians or
  35. the freshness of nature in spring.

  37.      Of course most often than not the travel was not only for pleasure or
  38. getting knowledge but also for health reasons. The over 160 health resorts
  39. and spas open all the year round are already known far beyond Romania's
  40. borders.

  42.      We will be glad to welcome you here in Romania in any season in the
  43. mountains, on the Black Sea coast, or on a cruise through the dreamlike
  44. scenery of the Danube Delta, or on a visit to the traditional historical or
  45. cultural monuments known all over the world.

  55.      Romania lies in South-Eastern Europe, in the northern part of the Balkan
  56. Peninsula.
  57.  
  58.      Area: 237,500 sq. km
  59.  
  60.      Population: over 23,000,000 inhabitants, consisting of Romanians (88.1%),
  61. Hungarians, Germans, Serbians, Jews and other nationalities.
  62.  
  63.      Capital city: Bucharest with over 2.3 mil, inhabitants.
  64.  
  65.      Main cities: Constanta, Brasov, Oradea, Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Suceava,
  66. Iasi, Ploiesti, Craiova, Arad, etc.

  68.      Official language: Romanian (of Latin origin). Foreign tourists may use
  69. all languages of international use.

  71.      Official time: two hours ahead of Greenwich. Summer time from the last
  72. Sunday of March to the last Sunday of September.

  74.      CLIMATE: transition temperate-continental characteristic of Central
  75. Europe. Annual average is + 11C on the sea-coast and the southern
  76. parts; + 2C in the Carpathian mountains. Winter: average -3C; spring: +10C;
  77. summer: +24C; autumn: +10C. The average rainfall 600 - 700 mm yearly.

  79.      NATIONAL CURRENCY: Leu (Lei in the plural); 1 Leu = 100 bani.

  89.      Traveller's cheques and most credit cards are accepted in Romania. A 1%
  90. exchange commission is charged on any exchange operations.

  94.      Anti-rabic vaccination certificates for animals (cats, dogs, etc.) are
  95. required when entering Romania.

  99.      Administrative organization: Romania's territory is divided into
  100. counties, municipalities, towns, communes and villages.

  102.      AIR ROUTES: Planes of the Romanian air companies TAROM and
  103. LAR daily link Bucharest to the main big cities in Europe and on other
  104. continents. Other foreign companies with offices in Bucharest have flights to
  105. Romania.

  107.      Romanian planes fly daily to and from Bucharest linking the capital city
  108. with the main cities of the country: Arad, Bacau, Baia Mare, Caransebes,
  109. Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Iasi, Oradea, Satu Mare, Sibiu, Suceava, Tirgu Mures,
  110. Tulcea, Timisoara.

  112.      RAILWAYS: to and from Romania (Bucharest, the Black Sea coast, spas,
  113. resorts, other tourist spots) 20 international trains are scheduled, with
  114. through carriages and sleeping cars, to all European countries.

  116.      Romania is a member to the international rail tariff systems RIT and
  117. Inter-Rail.

  119.      SEA AND RIVER ROUTES: the Romanian motorships "Oltenita", "Carpati" and
  120. "Steaua Dunarii" cruise the Danube in season.

  122.      NAVROM ships ferries along the Romanian ports on the Danube.

  124.      Foreign motorships cruise the Danube and Black Sea calling at the
  125. Romanian Danubian and sea ports.

  127.      ROAD TRAFFIC: all over the country well-kept roads comply with
  128. international standards. Driving is on the right side and overtaking on the
  129. left.

  131.      POST-OFFICE: post-offices are opened daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on week
  132. days. They are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Postal-boxes are
  133. yellow-painted and have the word POSTA written on them. They are emptied three
  134. times a day. Post-cards and stamps can be bought from post-offices
  135. tobacconists', bookshops and reception desks in hotels.

  137.      TELEPHONE: almost all towns, international resorts and spas have
  138. automated telephone booths. Coins of 1 leu and 3 lei are required. Introduce
  139. the coin into the slit, dial the prefix and the phone number right away. Coins
  140. of 1 leu are required for local calls.

  158.      PUBLIC TRANSPORT: a network of state taxi cars (having the word TAXI
  159. written on them) and private taxi cars (TAXI - P). Transport means in big
  160. cities tramways (1 leu), trolleybuses (1.50 lei) and buses (1.75 lei). In
  161. Bucharest there is a modern underground (2 lei).

  163.      TOURIST VISAS are obtainable from:

  165.      - Romania's diplomatic and consular offices abroad by all those having
  166. legal passports recognized by the Romanian state;
  167.  
  168.      - at frontier points against the same documents.

  170.      CUSTOMS REGULATIONS: Romania is implementing the provisions under the
  171. Convention on customs facilities for tourist traffic and the Additional
  172. Protocol signed in New York on June 4, 1954.

  174.      Tourists may temporarily bring into the country the following items,
  175. duty-free: personal items, foodstuffs and the medicine needed during their
  176. stay, in keeping with international regulations. Tourists must declare the
  177. goods brought into or taken out of Romania on arrival and departure to the
  178. customs authorities. It is forbidden to introduce fire arms, cartridges,
  179. radioactive substances, drugs.

  183.      The Carpathian mountains (about 35% of the country's area) cross Romania
  184. from North to South - West; the highest peaks between 1651 m (Rarau Mt) and
  185. 2544 (Moldoveanu Mt.) They are covered with leafy trees. The air is rich in
  186. ozone and bracing. The snow lasts from November to April. It measures in
  187. winter: 80 cm - 1 m.

  189.      Hills and tablelands (about 33%) contain orchards (apple-trees,
  190. pear-trees, plum-trees, apricot-trees, etc) and vineyards.

  192.      Fertile plains (about 32 % of the total area) are cultivated to grains
  193. (wheat, maize, barley, etc.), vegetables (tomatoes, sweet-peppers, lettuce,
  194. etc), herbs and industrial crops.

  196.      Numerous rivers have their springs in the Carpathians, all of them
  197. tributaries of the Danube. Among the main rivers are: the Olt, the Mures, the
  198. Jiu, the Prut, the Siret, etc.

  200.      The Danube river flows for 1075 km in Romania (about 2/3 of its length)
  201. and joins the Black Sea through the Danube Delta, a land unique in Europe
  202. (434,000 ha).

  204.      There are ten modern resorts on the Romanian Black Sea Coast (Mamaia,
  205. Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud, Costinesti, Neptun, Olimp, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn,
  206. Mangalia), which can accommodate over 150,000 people in hotels, villas,
  207. camping sites, holiday villages.
