  5. tight  or loose,  or too corroded,
  6. you may not be  able to get proper
  7. derailleur function  until you fix
  8. the  cable. Derailleur  cables are
  9. replaced like  brake cables. After
  10. installation,  pull the  slack out
  11. of   the  inner   wire  while  the
  12. derailleur and shifter are in high
  13. gear  position.  Grease  the inner
  14. wire,  especially  for  the  front
  15. derailleur, because they are prone
  16. to rusting.

  18. *  If  your chain  or sprocket are
  19. worn, the derailleurs may not work

  24. well.  Another problem  is a  skip
  25. when  pedaling   hard,  especially
  26. when   using  the   smallest  rear
  27. sprockets.  Check the  skip's fre-
  28. quency.  If  it   once  for  every
  29. revolution of the  chain, there is
  30. probably a stiff  link. Try lubri-
  31. cating  and flexing  it laterally.
  32. If  the  skip  is  once  per  each
  33. revolution  of the  front or  rear
  34. sprockets, look for  damage on the
  35. offending  sprocket.  If  the skip
  36. frequency is random, the chain and
  37. freewheel  are probably  worn out,
  38. requiring  replacement   for  best
  39. performance.
