  4. Zero-gravity protein is no reason to build a space station,

  8.     One of the arguments for building the multibillion-dollar
  9. space station Freedom is that it would provide a zero-gravity
  10. laboratory to grow bigger and purer protein and silicon
  11. crystals. But increasingly there is a question as to whether the
  12. crystal-growing techniques, at least for proteins, are all that
  13. reliable. Reviewing a decade's worth of such space efforts,
  14. scientists writing in Nature found that less than a quarter of
  15. the experiments actually worked, and then with only mixed
  16. success. Their recommendation: rent time aboard the already
  17. orbiting Russian space station Mir.
