  7.     Many people see a job change as a chance to refurbish an
  8. outdated image. But EDUARD SHEVARDNADZE, the recently elected
  9. chairman of the Georgian parliament, has gone beyond getting a
  10. few new suits and a haircut. Last week the former Soviet Foreign
  11. Minister announced he had found himself a new religion.
  12. Shevardnadze, 64 and a onetime professed atheist, told a radio
  13. interviewer he had been baptized not long ago in a Georgian
  14. Orthodox cathedral and had assumed the Christian name Georgi.
  15. "I have an icon in my office now," said Shevardnadze, referring
  16. to a picture of the Virgin Mary. "Though there was a time when
  17. I had Stalin's portrait on the wall."
