  4. The FDA approves a controversial birth control injection

  7.     The best thing about Depo-Provera, the birth control drug now
  8. finally approved for use in the U.S., is that it lasts so long.
  9. One shot in the arm or buttock provides 99% effective
  10. protection for three full months. That's the main reason it is
  11. used by nearly 9 million women in 90 countries, including
  12. Britain, France, Sweden and Germany.

  14.     But in the U.S. the drug has been mired in controversy
  15. since the mid-1970s, when its use as a contraceptive was blocked
  16. because of a link to cancer in animals (a link that seemed weak
  17. or absent in subsequent human studies). Some women's groups are
  18. worried that it will be pushed on low-income women or used to
  19. enforce compliance to a birth control regimen.

  21.     The worst thing about Depo-Provera is the side effects,
  22. which can leave users tired, weak, dizzy and nervous. Most women
  23. who take the drug also gain weight -- often as much as 5 lbs.
