- A LONG REIGN ENDS
-
- In the 19 years since the Bahamas gained independence from
- Britain, Lynden O. Pindling has been the only Prime Minister.
- But trouble in the economy, including a decline in tourism --
- the archipelago's main industry -- ended all that. Challenger
- Hubert Ingraham, a market-oriented centrist, won 31 seats in the
- 49-member Parliament and the right to form a new government.

- FRIENDLIER NEIGHBORS

- China and South Korea announced that they will open formal
- diplomatic relations this week. Though South Korea remains a
- close U.S. ally, Seoul is also an increasingly important trading
- partner for Beijing. The rapprochement is likely to put more
- pressure on communist North Korea to reach peaceful agreements
- with Seoul. South Korean President Roh Tae Woo is expected to
- visit Beijing in October.
