  7. prostitution with icy indifference. Officials denied government
  8. involvement in what historical records clearly show -- that the
  9. Japanese military forced tens of thousands of Asian women into
  10. a vast network of government-run brothels during World War II.
  11. But in a move that reflects the country's determination to
  12. upgrade its international image, Japan finally acknowledged
  13. government complicity and hinted it would consider extending
  14. financial assistance to the surviving victims.
