  3.     Q. Is South Africa descending into chaos?
  4.  
  5.     A. The African National Congress has repeatedly said they
  6. were committed to negotiations. If they allow the matter to
  7. descend into chaos, then many of us will doubt that they were.
  8. They had already decided ((to quit talks with the government))
  9. before the Boipatong massacre because they could not have their
  10. own way.

  13.     Q. How would you describe your relations with the leaders of
  14. the A.N.C.?
  15.  
  16.     A. Very torturous. I am very fond of Mandela, even now. I
  17. have always loved him. But there is a section within the A.N.C.
  18. that does not want their leader to have anything to do with me.

  20.  
  21.     Q. Although Inkatha attends the talks, you personally
  22. boycott them. Why?
  23.  
  24.     A. My party is represented. But the Zulu people have been
  25. excluded. We have already told President de Klerk that if
  26. certain decisions are reached without the Zulu people, then
  27. morally we are not obliged to comply with those things.

  30.     Q. The A.N.C. and survivors in Boipatong say the killings
  31. were carried out by Zulus who support Inkatha.
  32.  
  33.     A. How do they know? Is every Zulu who lives in that hostel
  34. a member of Inkatha? Your question makes me despair. We are
  35. interested that the people who were responsible be tracked down
  36. and punished. I have never orchestrated violence, or taken one
  37. decision for anyone to be killed even on one occasion. The fact
  38. that members of Inkatha have been sucked into the violence is
  39. something that I regret.

  42.     Q. Why has the violence escalated since President de Klerk
  43. initiated reforms?
  44.  
  45.     A. We, as black people, have not developed a culture of
  46. tolerance and democracy. Secondly, there was already an ongoing
  47. people's war. The A.N.C. urged young people to kill all those
  48. they considered traitors.

  51.     Q. Are Inkatha members inciting violence outside your
  52. control?
  53.  
  54.     A. There is counterviolence, there is revenge violence,
  55. there is feud violence. They even commit pre-emptive violence.
  56. When they do those things, they are not orchestrated by me. When
  57. you get violence at such levels, you cannot blame the leaders.
  58. It is a civil war.

  61.     Q. Isn't it provocative for Inkatha sup porters to carry
  62. traditional weapons such as spears in public?
  63.  
  64.     A. It is part of my culture and custom. You focus on the
  65. wrong thing. It is the violence that is wrong. You can kill
  66. people with a woman's shoe.

  69.     Q. Are you optimistic?
  70.  
  71.     A. There have been wars in this country. We survived. All
  72. along I have believed that the people of South Africa will sit
  73. down and work out their destiny jointly. I believe that now. I
  74. am still optimistic.
