  4. The Navy finds ample evidence of sexual assaults -- but few
  5. culprits

  8.     Talk about a group of men who just don't get it. Last
  9. September at a convention of Navy and Marine aviators, an
  10. entertainment favored by scores of junior male officers involved
  11. lining up along the narrow corridors of the Las Vegas Hilton and
  12. groping at any woman who happened by. According to two Navy
  13. reports released last week, at least 14 women officers and 12
  14. female civilians had their breasts, buttocks and other bodily
  15. parts grabbed by drunken male pilots. As appalling as the
  16. behavior itself was the reaction of the more than 1,500 officers
  17. and civilians questioned about the incident. "A common thread
  18. running through the overwhelming majority of interviews was,
  19. `What's the big deal?' " stated a report issued by the Naval
  20. Inspector General's office.

  22.     Upholding a fraternal code of silence every bit as
  23. effective as the Mafia's legendary omerta, male pilots
  24. stonewalled investigators' questions so effectively that only
  25. two suspects were identified. To date, just one Navy official,
  26. Rear Admiral Jack Snyder, has been punished. His offense? When
  27. a female aide complained of the lewd activities, he responded,
  28. "That's what you get when you go to a hotel party with a bunch
  29. of drunk aviators."
