  4.     In northwest Mexico without your own phone? No problem.
  5. "Virtual telephone service" to the rescue. Come spring you can
  6. get your own number and confidential voice mailbox and, by
  7. calling from any public phone, retrieve messages left by other
  8. callers. The Trilogue system, patented by Comverse Technology
  9. of Woodbury, N.Y., provides instant hookup in areas where
  10. expensive phone installation may take months, even years. "I
  11. call it entry-level service," says Comverse spokesman Paul
  12. Baker. "We're bringing the modern telephone to the grass roots."

  14.     The novel contract with Mexico's Telmex phone company
  15. calls for 1,000 electronic mailboxes in each of three cities:
  16. Tijuana, Mexicali and Ensenada. Potentially, Trilogue could
  17. service scores of other Mexican urban areas that have the
  18. prerequisite pay-phone networks. Farther afield, Comverse is
  19. eyeing markets in developing countries from South America to the
  20. Far East. The company has links with major distributors like
  21. Samsung in Korea and Oki in Japan, as well as Alcatel, the
  22. French telecommunications giant, which rang up the Mexican deal.
