  4. South Africa's De Klerk cracks down on dirty doings in the army

  7.     It was a most unseasonal act. Days before Christmas and with
  8. immediate effect, President F.W. De Klerk suspended or retired
  9. 23 of South Africa's top officers, including two generals and
  10. four brigadiers. All are under suspicion of clandestine
  11. activities -- some involving hit-squad murders -- designed to
  12. undermine his political reforms. De Klerk dismissed talk of an
  13. attempted military coup, saying there was no threat to South
  14. Africa's security. But criminal charges could follow next year.
  15. "We're not dealing with kids," he said.

  17.     All year long, De Klerk's credibility has been battered by
  18. charges of dirty dealings within his defense forces. Thus his
  19. crackdown on these mavericks has almost certainly scored him
  20. some valuable points -- enough, perhaps, that in spite of
  21. enduring a year of violence, crime and political stalemate,
  22. South Africans are beginning to see hope for l993. "We are
  23. closing the year on a high note," Nelson Mandela told the
  24. Sowetan, Johannesburg's black newspaper.
