Does anyone out there know what type of light would be better for
my 'sewing corner':
a halogen desk lamp, 60 watt
a halogen floor lamp, 100 watt
I currently sew (all hand piecing) beside a 100 watt halogen floor lamp.
I am putting together a more secluded corner in which to work, and have
a choice of a desk lamp placed on a bookcase, with my chair beside the
bookcase, or a floor lamp (and smaller bookcase, since the lamp will
take floor space), with my chair beside the floor lamp.
The floor lamp points at the ceiling; the desk lamp is adjustable to
point in almost any direction.
So, what's better, wattage, or adjustability?
Suggestions are welcome! I would like to buy the lamp this weekend,
while the sale is still on!
thanks all, Lena

For myself, I prefer a light source that points directly at the piece
I'm stitching from somewhere above and behind my left shoulder. At
present, I'm using a floor lamp that points downward with a 200 watt
bulb in it. Were I in your shoes, I'd go for adjustability, but I'd
sure want to be able to use something brighter than 60 (or even 100)
watts for my light source.

Linda, I've used Fine Fuse for machine applique and it works beautifully--
no stiffness. There are competing thin fusibles out there and my
machine applique teacher said she thought they all worked equally well.
(she is Janet Page Kessler, whose quilts are all done in applique)

If I had to pick one I'd go with wattage. I need all the light I can
get. However, you may not have to compromise. If you can get a desk
lamp big enough to take the bulb there are low wattage flourescent bulbs
that give off more light that incandescent. I was using one in a sewing
lamp for a while. It used 18 watts of power but burned with the
equivalent lumens of a 75 watt incandescent. That way you can get more
light out of a lamp rated at only 60 watts. The are fairly expensive
(about 20-25 dollars) but they last forever. The Lions Clubs in NY got a
donation from NYS Gas and Electric, so they were selling them for $3.00
last year. One other minor problem, it takes them a few minutes to
reach full intensity.

They are all gone, sorry.
(I still have the hardcover book,
"How to make an american quilt").
