DUERER I ----- english manual
======================================
ATTENTION PROGRAMMERS !!
========================
First: You are allowed to use or to distribute this program as much as
you want.
If you send me 20 DM (German Marks) or 15 $ (US-Dollar), you will get the
170 KByte long source code on a SONY MFD-2DD disk. Because of the extensive
length, this disk includes some other ASCII-Files explaining the programming
and the working methode of the following subroutines of Duerer:
- the paint instruments (e.g. pencil, rubber, line, ...)
- the magnifier and its options
- load/save an IFF-Graphicfile
- hardcopies
- reflect a graphic on x/y
- the brushes and their options
- using diskfonts
- the message system used in Duerer
- some advice to convert Duerer into NTSC
- as an addition, the disk contains an assembler routine, drawing a line
with the blitter in only 472 clock cycles.
If you want to get this highly interesting disk, you must write to me:
STEFAN KUWALDT
AM HIRSCH 1

Please write your own address in printed letters; I'll react as fast as
possible.

INTRODUCTION
============
In spite of its short program length, Duerer is very well suitable to create
graphics or brushes. All of those can be saved either in the known IFF format
or in a special RAW format, which is especially interesting for game writers.
Except HAM and EHB, Duerer makes all Amiga graphic formats available to you.
Don't forget that fonts have to be on the bootdisk. Unfortunately, Duerer
is only compatible to the europe PAL screen mode.
GENERAL USING
=============
After starting the program, a requester appears on the screen. Now, you
can select your favorite resolution and the number of colors, you need.
Quit the requester with a click on OK or hit simply RETURN.
Now appears the paint screen in the selected attributes together with
the border, used to display the painting instruments and the color
gadgets. You can simply begin to paint by using the left mouse button.
Use F10 to fade in/out the borders to get the whole screen to paint on.
THE TOOL-BOXES
==============
You select an instrument by clicking on it with the left mouse button
or by using an alternative key command.
Some tools allow you to choice under several modes; if available, you
can get the respective requester by clicking the tool with the right
mouse button or by hitting CTRL together with the alternative key to
this instrument.
For the rest, all key commands are you shown by selecting menu
"Options/key commands".
A) THE VERTICAL TOOL-BOX:
The tools "PENCIL","RUBBER" and "LINE" should be easy to understand.
CTRL-d allows you to choose under a "pointed" and a "normal" pencil
draw mode. This is important to the rubber as well.
With CTRL-l, you can define an alternative "Line pattern". Further,
it's possible to activate the interesting "Trace effect". Mind you,
that's also possible with some other instruments as well.
The "BRUSH" is a little more complex; clicking it by the right mouse
button, you are expected to choose under three program-defined brushes,
which can be individually manipulated by their size ("Change size"), and
your own brush ("defined"). Wait a moment, and I will explain you how
to use it. The modes "Normal" and "Stamp", respectively, mean, that
the background will shine through your brush, or not. That occurs on
the transparent areas of it.
The "WATER-TAP" fills out closed areas with the current color and the
selected fill pattern, which is displayed in a little box in the vertical
tool-box. Click it or press CTRL-f and you can choose under 32 patterns,
which can be individually changed. All the 32 can be loaded/saved. Click
the pattern you are going to change, with the right mouse button and it
will appear a requester, in which you can manipulate this pattern.
With the "BRUSH-GETTER", you define a part of the screen as to be your
new paint brush, by simply drawing a rectangle around the desired area.
The "TEXT-TOOL" is to possible you to write a short text into the picture.
After selecting this tool, you must position the cursor in the screen with
the mouseclick. Now you can write, but don't forget the following: YOU
MUST TERMINATE THE WRITING BY E S C ! Otherwise, you will cause unex-
pected results.
Whether the background shines through or not is determinated by the fill
pattern mode, selected with CTRL-f.
If you click the text tool with the right mouse button (or CTRL-t), it
will appear a font requester, in which you can choose under the fonts on
your bootdisk and the styles underlined, bold, italic, extended and normal.
Click on "Show" to let you show the current font with the selected styles.
With "POLYGON" you can simply draw polygons. Finish the drawing with SPACE.
The tools "RECTANGLE" and "ELLIPSE" respectively, are similar to under-
stand. Drawing rectangles, you must know, that the line pattern is important
to empty recs. and the fill pattern for filled recs. The fill pattern is
also important to filled ellipses. In a special requester (CTRL-r / CTRL-e),
you can activate the trace effect and choice under rectangles/squares and
ellipses/circles, respectively. Note, that the choosen resolution is very
important to that!
The "MAGNIFIER" is an especially interesting feature of Duerer. After
clicking on it, the mouse moves a rectangle over the screen which is
representating the area to be enlarged. Now click the left mouse button
and in a new window will appear the enlarged area, in which you can paint
now, unfortunately only with a simple pencil. Left at the bottom is dis-
played the area in its original size. You can move this scrap with the
gadgets on the right side of it (or use the cursor keys). Click on the "X"
(or press RETURN), and the new part of the picture will be enlarged.
Right at the bottom, you can choose under three factors, important to the
magnifying. With the gadgets under them, you select the color to paint
with. But there is another, more comfortable, way: use the size gadget
in the right down edge and click on the color gadgets of the horizontal
tool-box. Note this: never use the magnify, when the tool-boxes are faded
out!
The "RASTER" draws lines for orientation in selectable distances on the
screen (to select, click on raster with right). If you click with left
on this gadget once more, the lines will be replaced. But: don't paint
over the lines. Otherwise, they won't be replaced correctly! While
entering the distances, you should never use negative or other unsuitable
distances!
The tools "CLR" and "UNDO" respectively are supposed to be easy to under-
stand. Nevertheless, you must know, that Undo will work in another way
when using brushes: all steps up to the selecting of the brush tool are
canceled.
B) THE HORIZONTAL TOOL-BOX:
The conspicuous color gadgets in the horizontal tool-box can simply be
clicked by the left mouse button to select the paint color.
The current paint color is displayed in a little box left from the color
gadgets. This box must be clicked (alternative key F1) to have the RGB
COLOR MIXER on the screen. It's simply to use; the RGB values are shown
under the proportional gadgets in hexadecimal.
The "EDIT" gadget leads to the color mixer too.
With "RESET", you choice the color having been current after starting
the program, in other words the default colors.
THE PULLDOWN MENUS
==================
A) THE "PROJECT" MENU:
The procedures "LOAD", "SAVE" and "DELETE" are supposed to be clear.
A special feature is the RAW format, which you can choose in the file
requester instead of the standard IFF format. Such a RAW file is built
as following:
Offset: Function:
0 Viewmode of the graphic file (WORD)
2 Width in pixels (WORD)
4 Height in pixels (WORD)
6 Number of bitplanes (WORD)
8 Here are the RGB color values. According to the number
of bitplanes, there are from 2 to 32 WORDS, exactly built
like the color values used in the Amiga Hardware.
Finally, the file contains the bitplanes, mixed together like the
follow
