It is triggered by rising levels of the female hormone estrogen, which stimulates the production of another hormone (luteinising hormone) that causes the follicle containing the egg to burst. Ovulation can be detected by monitoring changes in body temperature and by observing the appearance of the cervical mucus, which appears as a normal vaginal discharge.
