OCR: ENDOMETRIUM HE ENDOMETRIUM is the inner I lining of the uterus (womb). It serves to nourish and protect a newly fertilized egg. It also assists in the formation of the placenta, through which the fetus is nourished until birth. At the beginning of the reproductive cycle, the level of the hormone estrogen rises. This promotes the thickening of the endometrium to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. After estrogen levels reach their peak, an egg is released. If the egg is unfertilized, it is shed with the endometrium through the cervix.
