OCR: ECTOPIC PREGNANCY A PREGNANCY in which the embryo develops outside the uterus is known as an ectopic pregnancy. The most common site is in one of the fallopian tubes. More rarely, the fertilized ovum can also become implanted in an ovary or the cervix. An ectopic pregnancy may be caused by the fertilized egg becoming stuck in the fallopian tube if the tube is damaged or abnormal in any way. One in every 200 pregnancies is ectopic. They are more common if you are taking a progesterone-only contraceptive pill, if you have an IUD, and if you use post-coital contraception.
