AS I HAVE MATURED...
Sent by Alvin Edlund
CLIPS Version and Text by
Dave Moorman
I am on Alvin's email list, and
receive many interesting FWDs. One was
an URL to a web page called "As I Have
Matured..." I decided to share it with
you in our own C-64 format.
The process was really quite
simple -- and I learned a few things
along the way!
First of all, I learned how to
better "massage" an image with Photo
Delux to make it look better after
being GoDotted. If you have a PC with
Photo Delux, here are the steps:
1. Load the image. Go to Size > Photo
Size, and change one of the following:
A. Set the Height to 6 inches, or
B. Set the Width to 8 inches.
If the result is not 8x6, you will
have to extend or cut one direction or
the other with Canvass Size. Which way
you go depends on the image, whether
or not an extension will look good,
and/or whether or not you can cut
anything. The result of this process
is an 8x6 inch graphic.
If you stretch the picture, you will
need to use Tools/Color Change to fill
in the open space.
2. Click on Quality > Brightness/
Contrast, and set Contrast to about
50%.
3. Click on Effects > Brush Strokes >
Accent Edges. Play with this to see if
you can make the image look sharper.
This works best if the image is a
drawing.
4. Click on Quality > Hue/Saturation
and run Saturation up to 100%. This
gives GoDot plenty of color contrast
to work with.
5. Click on Size > Photo Size. Set
both dimensions to "pixels". Then set
the Width to 320. The height will
become 240. Click off "Proportions"
and change the Height to 200.
6. Click File > Export > GIF89a
Export. Click "Advanced", then click
off "Interlaced". Set the Palette
"Adaptive" with 128 colors. Then click
OK. You will need to give a name to
your new file.
7. I use 64Copy to copy the GIF image
into a D64 disk image. Then I fire up
GoDot.
8. In GoDot, set LOAD: to GIF, SAVE:
to LOADSTAR, and Image Operators to
Decode GIF (either High Res or
Normal). When these are done, attach
the D64 disk image that contains your
graphic to drive 10. Click Load and
find the image and continue until it
is displayed.
This sounds like a lot of work,
but I did the 19 graphics in this show
in about an hour. I wish I could
automate the process.
I copied all the SHP files to a
new disk image, and copied over
B.CLIPS and CLIPS. Then I used
Mr.Edstar to write the script. In less
than 30 minutes, it was done.
But I wanted music! I searched the
Web for "Its a Wonderful World," in
SIDPlay format. But I came up empty.
Someone needs to create a SIDPlay song
search engine! As a backup, I got the
sheet music for the Peanuts song, and
transcribed it using SongSmith. The
file was converted to SIDPlay format
with SIDSmith. Then I used SID Editor
(from 243) to tweak it into shape.
SongSmith doesn't do ties between
measures. This is the major reason for
SID Editor -- plus getting some really
nice sounding voices. However, the TIE
function seemed to have a tendency to
flat a sharped note. Don't know why. I
simply pushed the note up one pitch
then flatted it. That worked great.
The conversion from SongSmith to
SIDPlayer format does not seem to do
Rests quite right. They appear on SID
Editor as B-4 -- which is an illegal
value that is roundly ignored by
SIDPlayer. Either ignore them, or
change them to RESTs.
And the final result? You tell me!
Better yet, get some photos or
drawings and convert them to C-64
style. Or send them to me, and I will
do the work and send them back to you
for your CLIPS show.

[LAST MINUTE:] I finally came across
"It's a Wonderful World" in MIDI
format. I have a Windows program
called Play Music with will
(sometimes) convert MIDI to sheet
music. Since it worked this time, I
transcribed it with SongSmith, and
repeated the above steps. Peanuts
became the issue music.
