^6FUN SCHOOL 4 - What's on the Timetable Today.
^7FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN!!!FUN
^6 Europress Software have kindly given us a copy of each of the new
^6Fun School 4 packages to give away to our readers. Before we let go
^6of them, we'll give you a guided tour as to what it in each on.
^6 There are 3 different age ranges, under 5's, 5's to 7's and 7 to
^611's. With six programs in each pack, there is plenty to keep young
^6minds active.
^2 [3In the Nursery Class.[0
^2 The Under 5's collection stars Teddy, everyone's favourite. He has
^2got himself a baseball cap and is more up to date than in previous
^2Fun Schools.
^2 The first program is Teddy Paint. This is a novel art program where
^2different shapes and pictures can be brought up by pressing certain
^2letters on the keybaord, you can change colour with the number keys.
^2The mouse is used to move these shapes and plant them on the screen.
^2There are other features, such as being able to cycle through the
^2colours by pressing the spacebar while planting a brush on the
^2screen. The manual gives the instructions in a story-like way so
^2that the child can easily understand what is going on.
^2 Teddy's House teaches about colours, the child has to decide which
^2colours to paint each part of the picture. If you use too much of a
^2colour, you are told that there is no more of that colour, which
^2could leave you with a funny coloured post box if you've used all the
^2red!
^2 Addition puts the little teds in the classroom. Teacher Ted asks
^2how many objects are on the blackboard and the answer can be entered
^2either by the keyboard, the keypad or by moving an indicator along
^2the row of numbers on the screen. As each sum is answered correctly,
^2a little ted is allowed out to play, when all the teds have gone,
^2teacher can go home as well!
^2 Teddy's books shows Daddy Ted reading a bedtime story to his six
^2little teds who are sitting up in bed. The books are arranged on a
^2shelf and the child has to guess which one Dad is reading. This is
^2easy at first as there is only one gap, but in higher levels there
^2are books scattered on the floor and bed as well. Every correct
^2answer sends one little Ted to sleep. When all are asleep, Dad
^2tiptoes out of the room and turns out the light.
^2 Next Teddy visits the fair and has a ride on the train. Here the
^2task is to match the picture on the board with the picture on the
^2train that Teddy is riding on. The simple spacebar to move to the
^2next picture and return key to choose a picture make this an ideal
^2starter to computer use.
^2 Teddy's Karaoke is the last program and is one that the little ones
^2will enjoy. Teddy is a D.J. and invites you to sing along with the
^2nursery rhymes. The words appear in true karaoke fashion with a
^2bouncing ball that moves along the words in time to the music.
^2As always, the package comes in a strong, colourful box, there's a
^2free sticker to stick in the car window to remind kids to `belt up in
^2the back'. A two disk program, will run with 1/2 meg memory, but
^2better with more.
^4 [3In the Infants School.[0
^4 The 5's to 7's box stars Freddy the Frog, and comes with a `learn to
^4swim' sticker.
^4 Freddy needs help to finish building his log cabin. You can help by
^4answering some sums. The questions appear on the unfinished wall,
^4and you choose an answer from a pile of logs. If you are right the
^4log fills part of the unfinished wall. If you are wrong, Freddy gets
^4upset and has to put the log back on the pile.
^4 In the library, help is needed to sort out the books. The aim is to
^4sort them alphabetically before going on to the next level.
^4 The problem of pairing words of opposite meanings comes next. A
^4word is given and you have to make Freddy jump around the pool and
^4land on the correct lily pad. If right, another little frog climbs
^4up the ladder to a diving board. When all the words have been
^4matched correctly, the frog dives off the board into the pool.
^4 There's a neat typing tutor for real beginners included. This shows
^4a keyboard layout with a frog who progresses around the screen
^4pursued by a crocodile. Each time you do something right, the frog
^4moves farther on, if you get it wrong, you go backwards towards the
^4crocodile. At first you only have to press keys, no more. Then you
^4have to press the keys that light up, then type groups of letters,
^4next words, then whole sentences. It's bright and cheerful and
^4nothing bad happens even if croc catches Freddy!
^4 Freddy goes to the shops and you have to help him with the money.
^4This program deals with adding up amounts of money and deciding
^4which combinations of coins make up the amount. In later levels you
^4have to decide how much change to give as well.
^4 Freddy plays basketball. You have to work out the next number or
^4letter in a series to make Freddy get the ball in the net (or should
^4it be basket?)
^1 [3Junior School.[0
^1 The robot of the previous Fun Schools has been replaced by Sammy the
^1Spy. This suite of programs covers history and geography as well as
^1maths and english.
^1 The program teaching Geography shows a map of the world. You have
^1to guide Sammy to various parts of the world. The levels range from
^1just flying a plane around as the places you fly over are named for
^1you, to taking Sammy to named destinations and answering questions to
^1find out where to go.
^1 Learn about time with Sammy at the airport. By answering questions
^1about various departure and arrival times, the player learns to deal
^1with earlier, later, etc.
^1 If you travel abroad, you will need to know that different
^1currencies have different values. This game deals with buying
^1foreign currency.
^1 There is a quiz section giving loads of general knowledge questions
^1for you to try. The answers are given, you just have to choose the
^1right one.
^1 The proportions program will even make adults think. You are shown
^1screens of objects and are asked for example, out of 10 spies, what
^1propotion have hats? The answer might have to be in fractions,
^1decimals or percentages.
^1 It's history at the pyramids next. Here you are asked questions and
^1given options of dates which are displayed on the stones of the
^1pyramid. Hop up on top of the one you want and press return. The
^1explorer hits the stone with his hammer, if right, the stone slides
^1away to reveal its treasure. If he runs out of hammers, he has to go
^1home. Watch the camel's eyes blink!
^6 Overall these are very good educational packages, they will keep the
^6kids amused for hours as they learn. The development of this edition
^6of Fun School has been overseen by Europress's educational advisor,
^6and the difference shows. The programs deal with certain elements of
^6the National Curriculum and will help your child enjoy learning.
