SAMPLE PAGE 1
Computer technology can enhance the ability of the individual to
communicate information, ideas and expertise.
At Knowledge Garden we are interested in the use of the computer as a
"#mmedium#m" rather than as a device for data manipulation, computation or
problem solving.
Several specific tools enhance the ability to communicate through the
computer medium. They are:
expert systems,
hypertext systems and
knowledge processors.

SAMPLE PAGE 2
The expert system approach to communication allows an author to control the
presentation of #mproblem solving#m information. The trouble with this is
that, other than answering questions, the user is unable to take a very
active role in determining the course of the communication process.

SAMPLE PAGE 3
The user of a hypertext system can browse at will through the material,
selecting and expanding information depending on interest and level of
experience.
For the writer hypertext permits freedom from the rigors of expressing
complex material in a rigidly linear form. Though at times this can be a
welcome relief, we would caution that writing in hypertext is in its
infancy and there's a lot of experimenting to be done before a standard
hypertext style evolves.

SAMPLE PAGE 4
Expert systems don't provide the USER with enough control.
Hypertext systems don't provide the AUTHOR with enough control.
The #mknowledge processor#m represents the marriage of both techniques
and lets each "react" to the other.

/medium
Like any medium, the computer has its own special
characteristics with #madvantages#m and #mdisadvantages#m.
The important thing is to recognize that using a computer for
communicating is different than using paper.
You should try to use writing tools and techniques that maximize
the advantages while minimizing the disadvantages.

/advantages
* Ease of production and distribution using disks and electronic
mail.
* Text does not need to be presented in an exclusively
linear fashion.
* Instructional material can be dynamic, changing to fit the
particular needs and experience of the reader.
* Text, graphic and computational systems can be combined.
/end
/disadvantages
* The reader must be seated at a computer to use the material.
* Resolution of the current generation of affordable hardware
is very poor.
* Readers and writers are not trained in how to use the computer
as a communication device.
/end
/problem solving
Most expert systems are used to solve problems that can be
described in the form of a consultation. These systems use the
decision tree as the basic method for representing knowledge.
/end
/knowledge processor
A knowledge processor must have the following components and
characteristics :
1] Commands for list manipulation and symbolic processing
2] Procedural commands
3] Hypertext
4] Backward Chaining capabilities
5] Structural units that can be hierarchically arranged (topics)
6] The ability to link to external hardware and software
7] Language extensibility
8] A text editor
