  3.                  RUHSBAH, THE SORKIAN, INTRODUCES HIMSELF
  4.  
  5.     The stranger sat quietly on a bench far from the fire, pulling slowly
  6.  at the cool brown ale.
  7.  
  8.     In the flames he saw images of his home in the #mSorkian highlands#m --
  9.  rough huts in stony pastures, frozen breath on the thin air, the yearly
  10.  trek to market. He drank and lost himself in his thoughts.
  11.  
  12.     On the other side of the room, the #moutlander#m growled at the
  13.  innkeeper and demanded more #male#m. This was, he vowed, the last time he
  14.  would visit this forsaken cattle town. Months of herding #mmarsh buffalo#m
  15.  had made him restless and belligerent. He needed excitement, not the
  16.  stultifying air of this backwater hamlet.

  18.     With a glance around the room, he spotted the solitary figure on the
  19.  far wall.

  24.     When #mSorkians#m reach the age of maturity, their hair turns steel
  25.  gray, making it difficult to tell the age of any Sorkian beyond childhood.
  26.  Perhaps the outlander didn't know this.
  27.  
  28.     Looking at the short figure in the traveling cloak, the outlander
  29.  decided the stranger must be an old peddler who could be the object of some
  30.  sport. Then the outlander saw the pipes sticking from under the peddler's
  31.  cloak.
  32.  
  33.     He rose to his feet. "Old man, play for us!"
  34.  
  35.     He walked over and poked the peddler with a bronzed arm. "Play your
  36.  pipes, old man!" He started to pull the pipes from under the cloak, but the
  37.  Sorkian's hand firmly stopped him.

  42.     "I said play!" the outlander bellowed and slipped the fighting axe off
  43.  his belt.
  44.  
  45.     "Friend, you're drunk," the Sorkian said softly, and the outlander
  46.  swung his axe.
  47.  
  48.     In the twinkling of a blade in the firelight, the outlander found
  49.  himself pinned to the inn wall with a Sorkian short sword driven through
  50.  the hem of his tunic between his legs. Standing on his toes, he gazed at
  51.  his axe now in the stranger's hands. "Who are you?" he gasped, choking with
  52.  fear.

  57.     "Ruhsbah the Sorkian," the stranger replied. Placing his foot on the
  58.  outlander's chest, he freed his sword and then broke the handle of the
  59.  fighting axe over his knee. Ruhsbah tossed the pieces of the axe into the
  60.  fire. "Perhaps this will teach you to be kinder to your elders," Ruhsbah
  61.  said quietly as he settled back down to his ale.
  62.  
  63.     Before Ruhsbah turned fully back to the fire, the outlander had fled
  64.  into the street.

  74.  
  75.     Sorkians are rarely over five and a half feet tall, but the
  76.  mountain life imbues their squat bodies with incredible
  77.  strength and endurance.

  79.     Besides their mountain homes, Sorkians love music, art,
  80.  and being left alone.

  83. /Sorkian highlands
  84.  
  85.     Sorkian highlands are the rugged mountainous areas
  86.  comprising #mPendron#m's northwest territories. Here the
  87.  #mSorkians#m herd sheep and goats, raising them for their meat
  88.  and wool. The highlands are difficult to reach and forbidding
  89.  to enter.

  91.     Much like the Great Drylands of the southern plains, the
  92.  highlands are hospitable only to those who are willing to
  93.  understand the ecology of the area and live accordingly.

  97.  
  98.     Newcomers to #mPendron#m find the ale both tasty and
  99.  apparently uninebriating.

  101.     The latter is not true, and has been the undoing of many a
  102.  wayfarer.

  107.     Pendron is the fourth, and greatest kingdom of the world
  108.  Nemesis.

  114.  
  115.     Marsh buffalo are as large and stupid as they are ill-
  116.  tempered. The calves weigh nearly a thousandweight within days
  117.  of birth, and they quadruple in size before maturity.

  119.     An adolescent bull has been seen butting down a large tree
  120.  in an attempt to kill an annoying insect resting on its
  121.  forehead. This apparently had no ill effect on the bullock.

  124. /outlander
  125.  
  126.     Outlanders are folk from the more temperature climates of
  127.  #mPendron#m. Overfed and unused to adversity, they frequently
  128.  become soreheaded and poor of judgment when subjected to
  129.  anything which they feel is not their just desserts in life.
  130.  There are, according to the seer #mKronin#m, outlanders on every
  131.  inhabited planet.
