The Kahoona Super Speedway was built in 1989 in the heart of the mid-west. What distinguishes it from other ovals is its width. It is a very wide tri-oval with a steep camber, having a 20 degree banking, but with one lane kept at a level camber on the inside. The oval is 2.5 miles in length and is a very easy course to drive around. The difficulty comes when you are driving against many other experienced drivers, all trying to get as good a position as possible!!
One of the interesting features about this circuit is the man-made lake in the central island of the track. The debris from the excavation work on the lake was used to construct the banking on the circuit. Vast amounts of sand were imported to surround the lake giving the whole place a definite holiday atmosphere. The lake can also be used for leisure activities when the track is not in use for racing or practises. Access to the lake is from an underground tunnel leading up into the launch area for the boats. This means that at no point do people have to cross the track, which could prove potentially dangerous. There are also bridges across the track at various points allowing access to the lake. At one point, plans for the lake were going to be cancelled, due to the cost involved, but at the last moment, funds were available from an undisclosed source.
The driver can also drive to the garages from the track, if he wishes to do so. There are over thirty garages to drive to. The garages were some of the new construction work that took place after the1994 earthquake tremor. Some of the foundations in the existing buildings needed repair and the track owners decided that while they were repairing sections, they would build a set of new garages.
In addition, away from the lake, the track has its own logo set into the grass, easily viewed from the Stands. This is painted concrete blocks set into the grass built up to form a sort of mosaic pattern. This was not an expensive feature to incorporate, but proved to be an effective one.
